Bummed Nolan didn't get director....but I am thrilled Waiting For Superman didn't
Very happy Kidman got in there. Michelle Williams should win this catagory, though (although we know she won't, sadly)
Leaving Mila Kunis out of the race is absolutely disgusting since she should have been the winner (Gossling, as well). Bonham-Carter was excellent in SPEECH but nowhere near as good as Kunis.
And I'm sorry, but while I thought WINTERS BONE was a good movie, I'll never get all this love it's getting. It was far from a "brilliant" film. It was a simple little movie about poor people with a good performance from a newcomer. It bored the hell out of most non movie loving folks I know and had it not been for me waiting to see something truly stunning since everyone's been losing their shlt over it, I don't know if I would have actually finished it.
I won't go on and on, as I have already voiced this in other threads, but I just can't take all the over hyping of Black Swan.
There, I'm done.
Thank you.

Most offended by the snubs of Mila Kunis for Supporting Actress, Christopher Nolan for Director, Ryan Gosling for Actor and Tangled for Best Animated Feature.
Love that Jacki Weaver and John Hawkes slipped in, though I also can't see all the love for Winter's Bone. It was a great film, but I felt both The Town and Blue Valentine were far superior.
I am hoping that Nolan wins for best original screenplay cause that was the most original movie of the year.
No BLACK SWAN for costumes or makeup? Or Mila Kunis? I'm surprised that Mila Kunis or Barbara Hershey weren't nominated.
I'm going with Natalie to win over Annette. Natalie's was more showy and the Oscars love young actresses who get their careers to be even more prestigious once they win (Nicole Kidman, Resse Witherspoon).
And finally, am I the only one who thought Amy Adams was better than Melissa Leo? Maybe Amy will pull a Tilda Swinton.

I think Annette should win for the discovery and aftermath (otherwise known as bathroom and dinner table) scenes alone. I can't deny Portman was very impressive, but I can't get those scenes in "Kids" out of my head and it's been months since I've seen it.
Then I suggest you see BLUE VALENTINE to see what a real Oscar worthy performance looks like.

I plan to. My daughter's dying to see it.

Can anyone tell me what source the screenplay for Toy Story 3 was adapted from?
Personally did not think Garfield was this fantastic presence in The Social Network, still better than Mark Ruffalo, however.
Inception was an interesting movie, but original? Everyone from Tarkovsky to Tarsem have done their own thing with the state of dreams and subconscious. Nolan put his own spin on it, does not make it original. Still surprised he did not get a Director nomination, and considering the nominees in the Screenplay category they will probably throw a bone to him.
Can we just go one Academy Awards season without nominated a Randy Newman work for Best Original Song? Viva la "Black Sheep"!

Thrilled that the Best Documentary nominations despite its short-list seriously missing some great docs chose up with the better ones and not that terrible, sensational documentary Gibney did on Spitzer.
Joe- It looks like they put it there because the story was written by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich while the screenplay was by Michael Arndt, so he adapted their story.
Joe, remake/sequels automatically assume the position as adapted script. Kind of like The Departed was a remake of a Hong Kong crime-thriller Infernal Affairs and The Departed won an Oscar for adapting the story.

One of the determining factors in the screenplay awards is being based on previously released material. Therefore, sequels fall into the 'adapted' category, because they are based on material already presented in their precursor.

“Tangled” deserved a nomination for Best Animated Picture! Also, Carrie Underwood’s song “There’s a Place for Us” in “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” deserved a nomination for Best Song.
I pick Jacki Weaver as the upset win of the night.
Oh hell, it's always the supporting actress.
Right you are doodle, it is always the supporting actress category!
I definitely think Garfield was snubbed. I thought he was better than Eisenberg.

The likely winner for Documentary is "Exit Through the Lobby", which made it onto numerous critics' "10 Best" lists. It's actually entertaining, and not preachy.
I suspect Black Swan didn't get costume just because they are ballet costumes and as such (esp for the "romantic" ballets of which Swan Lake is one of the TOP 4) not as much a challenge. The Von Rothbart costume was good but the big ole Black Swan number was mostly makeup and CGI. And 70% of the show was practice clothes. The gala clothes were pretty (anyone else but me wonder where Nina got that dress?)
I am cackling like a mad hen that "Barney's Version" only got Makeup!!!

"Can anyone tell me what source the screenplay for Toy Story 3 was adapted from?"
Joe, I'm guessing Toy Story 1 and 2.
I don't think Kunis deserved a nomination. Paul Giamatti did, however, and so did Ryan Gosling.
Thrilled for Jesse Eisenberg!
I loved Garfield, but I think I may have enjoyed Armie Hammer and Justin Timberlake's performances more. It's been a good year.
sabrelady, GANDHI won the Best Costume Oscar for "101 ways to wear a sheet," as my grandmother would say.
Its competition that year were: SOPHIE'S CHOICE, LA TRAVIATA, TRON, and VICTOR/VICTORIA.
Does anyone think that Jeremy Renner might win Best Supporting Actor since he was practically the only person that was nominated as DIDN'T win for "The Hurt Locker"?
Add me to the list of those disappointed that Mila Kunis did not get a nomination. Portman was stunning, but Kunis' performance haunted me for days after.
