I am so happy Javier Bardem got a nod. He is mesmerizing in this very depressing and hard to watch film. Very glad he was not overlooked.

"Does anyone think that Jeremy Renner might win Best Supporting Actor since he was practically the only person that was nominated as DIDN'T win for "The Hurt Locker"?"

He was the best part about The Town, which I think was more about the movie getting a nomination. The script was a mess and he really fleshed out what could have been a one-note character. He has no real shot at winning with Bale and Rush fighting for the category. Some people think front-runners Firth and Leo are closer to fitting that description (except I really do think Firth deserves an Oscar for this more than A Single Man).

I knew Hailee Steinfeld being considered a Supporting Actress would affect a glaring snub in that category (But I thought Barbara Hershey and Dale Dickey were more nomination worthy than Mila Kunis, though I liked her a lot in Black Swan). But her being there just adds to the unpredictability of that category.

Might as well flip a coin for Foreign Language film. Recent years have shown it is one of the most unpredictable categories. I was shocked when Pan's Labyrinth and White Ribbon lost.

HAPPY:

The nomination for "Exit through the Gift Shop." It's a fabulous documentary and, honestly, deserves to be on the Best Picture list as well.

"The Fighter" love.

SAD:

No nomination for Mark Wahlberg or Ryan Gosling, both of whom are deserving.

The two very worthy female "Black Swan" supporting performances went unrecognized.

Andrew Garfield's snub. Jeremy Renner is, in my opinion, nothing special in "The Town." Garfield, and even Matt Damon in "True Grit", were leaps and bounds better.

The big "Inception" snubs. No best editing? REALLY? And Christopher Nolan un-nominated? It's really laughable. In my opinion, it's the best film of the year- with the best directing, the best original screenplay and CERTAINLY the best visual effects.

The Coen Brothers must have inherited Clint Eastwood's files of Blackmailable Material on Oscar Voters -- 10 nominations for that tedious TRUE GRIT thing?

But there's cheer to be had -- Christopher Nolan didn't get a Best Director nomination for INCEPTION. I'll type that again, because it is such fun to type: CHRISTOPHER NOLAN DIDN'T GET A BEST DIRECTOR NOMINATION FOR INCEPTION!! I don't usually use this kind of acronym, but here: ROFLMAO!!!

Of course, his nomination for that idiotic INCEPTION screenplay kind of diminishes the cheer, but you get your fun where you can. And the one nomination that I think the film actually deserved it didn't get: no Best Editing nomination. What's up with that?

Not that I care.

I've seen 7 of the 10 Best Picture nominees. The best of them as far as I'm concerned is WINTER'S BONE, but I'd be okay with SOCIAL NETWORK or TOY STORY 3 taking the prize.

But it won't. THE KING'S SPEECH will, I think, pull a Haggis.

In all seriousness Roscoe, did you check out The King's Speech?

I actually agree with you about the Best Picture category. TKS won the PGA award which has been a good indicator and I think the Weinsteins will go all out for TKS to win BP or at least do their best to put down 'The Facebook movie'.

although there are a lot of odd snubs, they wont effect the (pretty much)locked winners. portman, firth, bale, leo, fincher, sorkin. the only one of those i can imagine changing is annette bening taking lead actress.

nolan wasn't going to win but it is still pretty ludicrous that the coens were nominated over him. i loved garfield in the social network but i had a feeling he wasn't going to get nominated. i'm a little surprised daft punk wasn't nominated for score, but that category was already skewed in my opinion ever since clint mansell's score for black swan was disqualified. that was the best of the year.

the big thing here is that the king's speech got the most nominations. immediately the media went all bat**** crazy and started saying "OHHHMAGAHHHHD KING'S SPEECH IS DA NEW FRUNTRUNNA!" this is probablly going to persuade some voters to vote for it.

my little quip that someone mentioned earlier in this thread is that never let me go has been overlooked all award season. i LOVED it to death. my favorite score of the year. carey mulligan should get a best actress nomination for it, as well as adam kimmel for cinematography.

NEVER LET ME GO was sadly released too long ago and died too quickly to be remembered this award season. I knew that would happen immediately after seeing it.

Strummergirl, in all seriousness, no I haven't seen THE KING'S SPEECH. I was planning on waiting for cable, as it just looks dreadful -- a Masterpiece Theatre drama of the problems of the Very Richest White People Of Them All, who overcome adversity and personal problems through the help of a charmingly eccentric lower class person. I may, of course, be wrong.

I'm not feeling particularly invested in any of the nominated films, or any of the nominations, or anything having to do with the movies of 2010. Some bright gleams here and there, to be sure, like TOY STORY 3 and WINTER'S BONE and unfairly neglected NEVER LET ME GO, and THE SOCIAL NETWORK and a couple of others. But tripe like BLACK SWAN and INCEPTION, my God...

I honestly doubt THE KING'S SPEECH can take the top prize. But don't mark my words for sure.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK or INCEPTION should certainly take home Best Picture, though INCEPTION, unfortunately, no longer has any chance of doing so.

There is always a possible voting split between SOCIAL NETWORK and KING'S SPEECH which could lead to a shocking upset by THE FIGHTER. I wouldn't be too upset about that, as is was a terrific film.

Also, on another note, if THE FIGHTER doesn't take home the ensemble award at the SAGs, then the world is not right.

No worries, Roscoe. I have a friend who feels the same way about The Social Network and refuses to see it (and really, really loves The King's Speech). I actually liked The King's Speech when it more about a friendship transcending class (I am such a sucker for that) when you just had Rush and Firth speaking together. Really did not care about the general historical record (which in film can pretty low standard)within the film that was unavoidable. I only cared about the three leads, who were all good, and didn't much care about the others in that film (and I really wanted to forget Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill).

I'm surprised by all the surety about KING'S SPEECH winning. I mean...I guess I can see it, but I still think it's (rightly) THE SOCIAL NETWORK's to lose.

Though I, too, am one that doesn't feel that Andrew Garfield was snubbed. I always felt like I watched someone acting, as opposed to Eisenberg who just was that a$$hole.

Thrilled for Michelle Williams though...just for what it must be doing emotionally to Katie Holmes-Cruise!

Strummer - that's pretty much exactly how I responded to THE KING'S SPEECH - although, I was also somewhat intrigued by the display of coldness exhibited by the royals (especially exemplified by Claire Bloom.) The dynamic between Firth and Rush, though, was exquisite, and ably supported by Bonham Carter.

And Mr. Spall gave the most fascinatingly embarrassing performance I've ever seen. All I could think was, "Who cast him, and then who let it continue?"

It reminded me of Kenneth Mars' Churchill impression in the orginal PRODUCERS film!

Spall had worked previously under Hooper as a supporting player in The Damned United, a film about English football manager Brian Clough (played marvelously by Michael Sheen) which I liked even more than The King's Speech. TKS had a relatively modest budget though I am sure Hooper could have scouted for plenty of English character actors who could do a good Churchill. Guess he felt more comfortable with an actor he knew.

I'm generally a great fan of Timothy Spall's work. He's been terrific in an array of Mike Leigh films, from LIFE IS SWEET to TOPSY TURVY. He's getting such uniformly bad reviews from everyone that I may have to see the KING'S SPEECH just to see one of the most reliable actors in the world blow it.

Roscoe, it's not even really that he blows it, it's essentially incomprehendible - you simply have no idea what he's doing or why he's doing it. I would say it needs to be seen to be believed.

It's not so much that he's doing a bad Winston Churchill. He's doing a bad Alfred Hitchcok doing a bad Winston Churchill.

(NOTE: Hitch's name is spelled wrong so I'm not given those **** for the last syllable of his name by the auto-censors on BWW.)

But I don't think he sucks or is even "off" in the movie. If this were an impersonation contest, he would lose. And that's what most criticisms I've seen have been focusing on: the superficial (I know, SHOCK!). Who the hell cares? I don't think anyone is really nailing their real-life counterpart in the film, with the exception of Helena Bonham Carter, who really is channeling the Queen Mum, particularly in her later scenes. It's not just the clothes and wigs, it's her physicality, accent, etc. She wins the impersonation contest in this movie.

Churchill is by far the most recognizable figure in the film, because of all the historical newsreel footage and audio tapes we've heard since junior high history classes.

But if recognizability is why you're going to see this movie, just skip the film and go to Madame Tussauds. No sense in spoiling the fun with an actual story and dialogue. Let's just see who looks and acts most like their real-life counterpart.

We'll call it British History Idol. People could judge that.

More like Harry Potter idol. I can't not watch UK films or PBS -released stuff without half the HP cast showing up.

I thought the King's Speech was a pretty decent film. It lagged at times, but there were moments of genuine emotional impact. The problem for me was at the end, in which everyone is

congratulating the king on getting through a speech. There's no balance of what was IN the speech, i.e., saying that there was a war on, again, with Germany. Just people smiling and shaking George VI's hand, "Well done." Ack. Yeah, well done, time to DIE, everybody.
