Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are planning a two-part adaptation of the classic John Steinbeck novel “East of Eden.” The film will star Jennifer Lawrence and will be directed by her “Hunger Games” collaborator, Gary Ross.
The 1952 novel was turned into an award-winning movie in 1955, directed by Elia Kazan, though that film mainly concentrated on the second half of Steinbeck’s Book of Genesis allegory. Mr. Ross’s plan is to film two separate movies. One deals with the first generation of the Trask family, in which the character of Cathy Ames, a malevolent and corrupting influence, is a central character.
I'm excited for this because Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. I first read EAST OF EDEN when I was in high school and it easily became one of my favorites. I re-visit it from time to time and it still holds up.
The first film version I saw was not the Elia Kazan/James Dean version but the 1981 television miniseries starring Timothy Bottoms, Lloyd Bridges, Hart Bochner, Karen Allen and Jane Seymour. I prefer this version over the 1955 film.

A two-part movie? Starring Jennifer Lawrence in the supporting role of Abra?
Unless it's re-titled East of Middle Earth, and the two brothers blow each other up in space ships, I don't think they'll get an audience for two films.
Jennifer Lawrence isn't playing Abra. Read the article again.

I get that Kazan only took one part of the book but I also know people really liked that mini-series with Jane Seymour. But the Kazan film itself is a beautiful, inventive piece of cinema.
If Dane DeHaan does not get cast as Cal, it'll be an upset.
Personally, I think Lawrence would make a better Cathy but, whatever. She can get any role she wants at this point.
Clearly no one is reading the linked article. Jennifer Lawrence is playing Cathy.

Ah, I'll watch Jennifer Lawrence do just about anything. Ross is not a particularly exciting filmmaker for me, but I'm certainly intrigued. The question is whether this will ever get made, Lawrence is just about the busiest actress in Hollywood right now and her and Ross announced a different film that's supposed to go into production next year. In other words, I won't hold my breath.
Okay, she's playing the mother. It's still a supporting role in the story, as is any female if they're "going by the novel," but a much better role than Abra (although it's smaller).
Jo Van Fleet was great in the original movie (and won an Oscar for it).
But the story doesn't revolve around her, as important as she is to it.
The 1955 film covers the second part of the novel and is very heavily abridged. The character of Cathy is very much an integral part of the story and much of what she does early on sets the stage for everything else that transpires. It's a great meaty part and one that IMO any actress would jump at the chance to play.
Van Fleet was great and earned her Oscar for the original 1955 film and Seymour was nothing short of a revelation in the mini-series.
Wanrer Bros' 1955 adaptation directed by Elia Kazan and starring James Dean, Raymond Massey, Julie Harris and Jo Van Fleet will be released on blu-ray November 5th.

I loved Jane Seymour as Cathy. She did such a great job and was so evil! That part took a lot out of her too. Don't know why they need to remake it though.

I always avoided the miniseries since it was by Richard and Esther Shapiro--the creators and headwriters of Dynasty (granted, while they remained Exec producers for the full run, they only actually wrote the much lower key first two seasons.) It just seemed like it would be camp -- I love Dynasty but... But now am curious.
EricMontreal what are you talking about? Richard and Esther Shapiro did not produce and had absolutely nothing to do with the 1981 television mini-series version.
The producers were Mace Neufield, Barney Rosenzweig and Ken Wales for Barney Rosenzweig Productions, Mace Neufield Productions and Viacom Productions.

I saw the mini-series when it originally aired. I thought it was okay, with the exception of Jane Seymour. I thought she was outstanding.
I am re-watching it this weekend. I found a copy at my local Barnes & Noble for 24.99. Yes, Jane Seymour was outstanding. Her performance is the one I remember after all these years.
I am going off the internet so of course could be absolutely wrong.
Here's Richard's writing credits http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0788616/?ref_=ttfc_fc_wr1 Wiki (which is often wrong) gives the same info under the page for the Shapiros.
Also at 1:50 of the credits on youtube it says Richard Shapiro (so I guess his wife was not involved.) You can see that here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG3XJgQjFhs
And they discuss it in one of the parts of their uber long TVLegends interview, I believe it's in part 3 here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx7sFT8D0s8 but could be wrong.
Or is this a different miniseries? To be clear I was talking about the screenplay writer, not the producer.
East of Eden is on youtube now. Loving all the Jane Seymour love here! Also- I'm a huge fan of the theme music- it's so beautiful!

I was wrong, the video of them talking about the miniseries of East of Eden is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZIE6CqoND8 at 2:40 Esther was loosely involved and Richard did the script. (She claims he improved on Steinbeck's treatment of women.)
I'm sorry Eric I was under the impression you thought they produced it. I think you would enjoy it very much if you watched it.
No apology needed--and if anything I got a bit overly defensive trying to prove what I meant. And it should be pointed out, before Robert Shapiro became so associated with Dynasty, he was an award winning TV writer. I've downloaded a high quality torrent (I know, I know...) so will give it a shot. I love me some Seymour.
