Eating on NYC public transportation

Having ridden the subways for over 30 years, I have never ever seen anyone stop anyone else for breaking the law. This includes eating, taking up seats with bags, SMOKING, feet up on poles, laying down, or anything you can think of. NEVER

I don't think you are allowed to eat on the DC Metro. Not sure though.

I don't have much cause to ride public transportion since I left Chicago, but people eating was always the least of my pet peeves. Hearing someone's music from their headphones (especially while I was also listening to headphones) was probably my number one.

Don't know what to tell you, Jane. A relative and two friends, on three different occasions, were all detained/pulled off by undercover MTA agents.

"Don't know what to tell you, Jane."

You don't have to tell me anything. We've had different experiences.

I've only ever seen cops interfere when people enter through the emergency exit doors.

But I have no intention of standing so that someone's Coach purse or Bloomindale's shopping bag can have a ride. I do my own enforcing of that rule.

"I do my own enforcing of that rule."

Me too - if I'm about to sit down next to someone who's bag is in the seat, and they make no effort to move it, I sit down anyway.

I know someone who was ticketed for laying across the seats- at a very early morning hour.

"You'll rarely see anyone 'making a public spectacle of themselves" eating in a sloppy or disorderly way on the tidy town square in the picturesque northwestern CT hamlet where I go to escape the noise and dirt of the City."

That's nice for you. Many people who work more than one job making minimum wage with no paid time off or sick days don't have those kind of options. I work with several clients who go straight from one job to another. If they're late they get docked. They eat when they can.

Can I just say re: that video. I did not know that congress passed a law that old people go to jail because of their age?

After Eight, my heart bleed for you,
But folk can’t just surrender to their fears.

I know it hurt to change.
It actually hurts, learning something new.

And when you full-grown, it’s harder, that’s true
It feel like you got to break yourself apart,
It feel like you got to break your own heart,

But folk do it. They do.

Every day, all the time,
Alone, afraid,
Folks like you.

"Me too - if I'm about to sit down next to someone who's bag is in the seat, and they make no effort to move it, I sit down anyway."

Good for you.

Than there's a similar problem encountered ever more frequently nowadays on buses: People sitting in the aisle seat and refusing to move in to the empty window seat, thereby preventing others from sitting beside them. There are times when I'll enter a bus and see all the aisle seats taken with every window seat empty. And often they will place their bags on the window seat to further assure that that place will remain unoccupied.

And the scowls, annoyance and anger on their faces when I request to sit in the empty seat, as they begrudgingly displace themselves and their packages to let me in! (Of course it never dawns on them that they could more easily just slide across to the window seat themselves.) No matter, I still thank them profusely, which makes them even angrier!

That's when you climb over the douche bag in the aisle seat and proceed to engage in a cell phone conversation where you laugh like a hyena every 10 or 15 seconds.

Who's annoyed now?
....but the world goes 'round

^

Why should you go to the trouble of climbing over them?

Let them do the work.

I think the subway breakdancers are more of an affront.

a guy was cutting his fingernails on the bus yesterday. Almost told him that it freaking disgusting but it was too early to get into a fight.

Here's a clever little trick I noticed. I take the NJ Transit train to and from the Jersey Shore on weekends. Here's what people do to prevent anyone from sitting next to them.

They occupy the aisle seat, and pretend to be sleeping. They assume this position just before the train pulls into a station. This way, they think no one will wake them up to move, or to crawl over them to get to the window seat. Then, when the train moves out of that station, and everyone is seated, they "wake up" and slide over to the window seat until the next stop.

I try to avoid eating on the subway. Come to think of it I don't think I've ever had anything more than coffee. Eating on the subway is inconsiderate but it doesn't really bother me - of course, the woman eating a hunk of chocolate cake during rush hour is another story.

I know you. I know you. I know you.

I think the only time I ate on the subway was when there used to be those freshly made hot pretzel vendors on certain subway platforms…Them were the days!
