Eating on NYC public transportation

What is the most popular dining establishment in NYC?

Without a doubt, it's that heavenly dining locale, the NYC public transportation system!

Now one would think that the NYC subway would be the least appetizing environment imaginable in which to eat food. One would be wrong. Nothing, but nothing, deters the stalwarts who can't take five minutes out of their busy day so as not to shovel down food in front of their fellow riders.

Like you, sir. That's right, you. The young fellow eating your bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich right across from me this morning. Hey, .... careful now, watch that piece of egg being squished out of the roll as you chomp down on it mechanically without the slightest sign of pleasure. It may fall out.... Oh yes, there it goes, but no matter, it's just taking its rightful place between the soda bottle spilling its contents on the ground and the crumpled Dunkin Donuts bag. But watch that cup of coffee positioned precariously between your knees. You're not concerned it might spill? A foolish question, I know, for what would it matter if it did? And I must say, it's very considerate of you to put the wrapping paper and empty cup in that plastic bag when you're done. True, you just placed it under the seat and left it there, but who noticed and what does it matter anyway?

I'm so excited... The bus ride up Madison Avenue promises so many nice sightseeing opportunities... Except that the man sitting in the row in front of me has placed all his personal effects on the seat beside him so that no one else can sit there, and he's mechanically digging his fingers into an opened package of apple pastry strips and shoving them into his mouth one by one, sans napkin, crumbs falling about, all the while reading a document from his job, wholly oblivious to everything and all around him. Well, I'd thought I'd be sightseeing, but what a sight to see!

Time now to face the crosstown bus. Wait, what's that smell hitting me as I enter? Oh, nice hot soup on an 80 degree day in a packed bus! Gee, that man in the very first row is sure ingesting it vigorously! And that heady aroma wafting throughout the entire bus -- it just won't quit! Keep downing those spoonfuls at a steady pace, sir, -- really, do you ever stop for air? -- but did you ever think about the woman beside you? That it could spill on her, or that she, the driver, the rest of us may not want to smell what you're eating for our entire ride?

Just a typical fine dining day in NYC.

Gee, A8, so much about life gets under your skin, maybe you should just stay home.

I'll give you I don't enjoy watching others masticate, but I can, after all, just look away.

It's the nature of big city US living. Many don't have five minutes to stop and enjoy a meal.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I agree with After Eight on this one; you can look away from the sight of it, but you can't look away from the smell.

It's bad enough to be packed in a subway car at rush hour after waiting on the sweltering platform for 15 minutes, but then to hear someone open their styrofoam container of fried chicken or Chinese food and brace yourself for the scent that will soon overwhelm the train is nauseating.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

I agree too - and that was a well-written piece A8. Even the ever-present nagging tone worked in this case.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

Eating on NYC public transportation

People can be selfish, inconsiderate and rude, and nothing gives them the scope to express those traits like living in a large, urban setting.

You'll rarely see anyone 'making a public spectacle of themselves" eating in a sloppy or disorderly way on the tidy town square in the picturesque northwestern CT hamlet where I go to escape the noise and dirt of the City.

The only thing is--by Sunday morning I'm so eager to get back to NYC that I'm generally on the road before lunch so I can get home in time to get to some galleries, grab a drink in a crowded bar or just enjoy the spectacle of what our old pal David Dinkins famously called the 'gorgeous mosaic'.

There's always Singapore--I bet nobody eats their EggMcMuffin on the subway there...

You think, what do you want? You think, make a decision...

there are people who run from place to place all day and the only time they get to eat is on the subway. I've found myself in that situation once or twice.

Watching someone eat is, well, you watch others eat when you go to a restaurant. What I object to the most is the smell!

If it's a snack that isn't messy or smelly and the person doesn't litter, I don't care.

I don't like it much, either, and I'd certainly not do it if I had a choice.

But I don't know that I've ever been truly inconveninced by it. And for all I know, it's someone trying to make ends meet by working two jobs, and eating while traveling may be their best option. I find that I make myself a little less crazy in situations like this if I start with the assumption that everyone's doing the best they can to get by.

I'm more annoyed by (and worried about) people with their giant cups of coffee hovering over me.

What Marianne said.

Eating on the go is part of living a New York City life. The catch is to be considerate enough to eat something that doesn't offend everyone within a subway car's radius.

Opening a styrofoam container of Chinese food or a burger with onions is obnoxious in a crowded environment.

....but the world goes 'round

The CTA prohibits eating:

Additionally, please do not: Eat or drink any food or beverage on board buses or trains (it is OK in stations, but be sure to dispose of trash properly)

I remember hearing about a proposed ban a few months ago, but as far as I know it's still legal to eat on NYC subways and buses.

Wasnt there a viral video of a hellacious fight on the subway after someone took offense to some girl's italian food? Everyone had gravy on that car!

There happen to be mitigating circumstances. Mine is that I have diabetes and hypoglycemia. If I don't eat for a certain amount of time, it's bad news. I always carry something as a snack with me.

There might be other situations where someone just has to eat.

Subway rules are never enforced. Who remembers the one about not taking up an extra seat with one's bags? That's a laugh!

I have eaten on the subway before. It's usually a granola bar or a piece of hand fruit I packed for the day. I only eat on the subway if I'm running behind schedule because of traffic getting into the city.

And honestly, if I have the option, I'll eat before getting on the train so I can throw out the garbage immediately rather than hold onto empty wrappers or cores until my stop.

It sure as hell gets enforced when I'm on the train.

As someone who knows of at least three instances where undercover cops detained individuals who transferred to another subway car through those connecting doors, which is against the law, I'd beg to differ! Eating on NYC public transportation

A granola bar is one thing. Or a pop tart, or whatever, on your way in the morning. On an empty train at 6am, I have on occasion eaten half a bagel.

But the person who opens an entire container of a full meal that everyone now has to smell... THAT gets my goat!

The other night I was sitting next to a woman who was eating something that smelled so repulsive, I was forced to get up and move because the smell was making me gag.

It's just too much sometimes.
