This is disappointing to hear. I was going to get one as a gift for a friend. Guess I'll have to investigate more, first.
Although, perhaps these are easy enough to make on your own and may be cheaper?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

We have had them delivered to the office and everything was always fresh.

It's always occurred me--though I've only ever seen them in commercials and ads--that I'd rather have either flowers or a fruit basket.
It seems to me that the best fruit for sculpting wouldn't be the best for eating.
They do look clever, though.

Reg, those are my thoughts. Imagine putting a skewer through some really ripe watermelon? It wouldn't work. The strawberries in this arrangement look sensational but taste nondescript. The same is true for the canteloupe and honeydew.
The one benefit to this is that as a recovering diabetic, I'm keeping my glucose numbers down because I'm not eating too much sweet fruit.
The idea was very nice, though.

It's one of those great ideas that fails in execution. As Reg and Dolly say, very pretty, but the best fruit for sculpting isn't so good to eat. Even if it is, cut fruit doesn't last as long as whole fruit, and think about it - is much more susceptible to bacterial issues. I see them backstage all the time, and watch them sit until they're discarded. Nobody wants them.
Fruit baskets, on the other hand, are always welcomed. It's a great idea for a party, especially if you make it yourself, for it's sure to be fresh and consumed that night, plus they're fun to create.

it may be that particular place where they make them. I am here in Denver. We have a few of them right downtown. They make them fresh and deliver them fresh.

Fresh doesn't mean "ripe".
People out here have told me that is depends on the place that makes them.

I ordered the chocolate covered strawberries one time and they were very bland.
And the "chocolate" was waxy.

Perhaps it is the place you received it from. I had one a few weeks ago for a house warming party. The fruit was perfect. It was a nice centerpiece and became a point of meeting for lively conversation.
I have also sent them as gifts. I have always been told that the fruit was wonderful.

The strawberries were the second time I tried them. I first ordered the basket, and it was also as Dolly described.
I heard good things about the strawberries, so I went for those instead. Needless to say, I won't give them a third go.

I've received three- one was all Chocolate covered strawberries and they were OK. Another was a fruit arrangement that was terrible- inedible fruit. One was actually pretty good- assorted fruit, all pretty tasty.
My horror was in discovering people had spent $45- $60 for really mediocre fruit. You can buy a couple pounds of EXCELLENT chocolate covered strawberries for that- or a HELL of a deluxe fruit basket.

I wish you hadn't mentioned the price. I went on-line and found my friend paid $48 for this thing. It's not the top of the line, but it's still a lot of money for what I received.

Really, the price is almost all going to the labor and transportation.
Also, I'd imagine that another advantage of underripe fruit, aside from easier carving, is that they'd hold up better over time. I imagine this is the same reason for the waxy chocolate. Really good chocolate covered strawberries don't really hold up too well for long periods of time.

A lot of this depends on the season for the fruit as well as the delivery process. How many "arrangements" were sitting in the hot truck before yours were delivered? The weather and transportation can take a toll on the fruit baskets also. We've received many over the years, all have been ripe, fresh and delicious. We've also sent some as gifts and they loved them!
There is a place in Maryland called Bundles of Cookies that has the same idea but you can personalize it more.
Ex: (I revieved this from my soon to be sister-in-law)
And then I received this from my brother and soon to be sister-in-law:
I personally, think the icing taste a bit like...playdough? But the cookie part is delicious. Other people that have shared the (calories) sweetness, enjoy both the icing and cookie.
*They have these types of cookie places all over, I just mentioned that one because that's where those particular cookies came from.

I have made cookie baskets before with thick iced flower shaped sugar cookies and rice crispy treats with flower shaped candies on them. I put them all on sticks and in with a few silk flowers to fill the pot, but they are adorable!
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

I'd call them and complain -- for the cost of the basket, you should be LOVING the taste.
I've had a number of these and they have always been delish.

We receive them at work from a vendor every year around the holidays. The presentation is always gorgeous but I've never liked the fruit.
I love when we get Harry & David delivered, though. I'm not a pear person at all but theirs are excellent. And the Moose Munch is delish!

It's a franchise operation and I guess it dependes on who their fruit vendor is. I use a different company in TO called Fruit Blossom Creations and we use them for all our big family dinners. Everyone always raves about how good the fruit is. The do chocolate covered apples in addition to the strawberries. My bro in law sells real estate and he always sends it as a house warming gift to his clients and they love them too. Just depends on each place .

I received one as a get well gift last year. All I could think about was the hands that had to touch the fruit in order to peel, cut, and arrange it. Just doesn't seem very sanitary to me. Of course, I washed the fruit and ate most of it anyway, but I'd never order one. Nice gesture though. But I would have preferred a traditional fruit basket.

It's a very good point that it does depend on delivery- I know locally they pay a kid in a beat up car to deliver. The worst one was sent to me when I was in the hospital- I assume because the arrangement sat at a nurses' station several hours before it got to me.
I find Harry & David to be monstrously over priced, also but their fruit is typically excellent. But, again, when you consider the purchaser paid about $10 a pound for those pears....

This damned arrangement is sitting in my fridge. I don't want to heave it because it was sent to me with the best of intentions. Still, a simple birthday card would have sufficed.

i agree about the taste of the strawberries and melon from edible arrangements. a few years ago someone send me an arrangement for my birthday from a place called "fruit flowers". the fruit was much fresher and tasted better.
