The main reason it wasn't shown, was at the time, they could not safely do those effects. The only real "Effect" they had was the deus ex machina (God from a machine for those who don't know), and that was a VISIBLE crane.
The Greeks, the Romans, and almost everyone through history has loved violence and carnage. We are no different.
To echo what Tazber said, only in more blunt and accusatory tones:
WHO THE HELL ARE YOU???? Did I miss the memo that said "FOAnatic is now the governor of who is and is not mentally sound, and what they say goes, forever. Ignore the fact that they are a filmmaker, and an arts fan, their censorship is not actually censorship, it's them deciding what is morally right for society." Because I would LOOOOOVE to see it. And, until you produce it, you should think long and hard about censorship, because one day, someone may try to censor you, in which case, I won't back you up. It is one thing to not enjoy something, or to not place personal value on it. As I have said, I agree with you, these movies are disgusting. However, knowing Tazber, I can assure you, there is not one thing wrong with him. To make such a sweeping generalization is no better than those people who claim "all gays go to hell" or felt that African-Americans belong on the back of a bus.

Given all the animosity over the "old hands" threads I thought I would revive a kinder, simpler discussion.

I am not a true fan of horror and its subgenres however I can appreciate a film for the techniques used to achieve an effect.I find the older films to be much better at dealing in dramatic tension as well as providing ample gore . Lately it seems to be just total slice and dice but w an emphasis on exploiting suffering.
I think my medical background keeps me from really "getting into" the films too. I see so much real pain and suffering in my work plus knowing what a human can physically endure just pulls me away from them both emotionally and intelectually. I guess when you've seen a carotid blowout in real life seeing someones throat slashed (et al) just doesn't carry the same interest level.
Roth seems to be very good @ what he does- successfully exloiting the lowest common denominator for fun and profit.

This reviewer says to see it for Bart - if you have the stomach, which I don't unfortunately. I'd have nightmares for the rest of my life, and not just while asleep! I'm squeamish of Horror films and they literally make me feel like I might go mad with fear and paranoia, so I avoid them.
Still, I disagree that that kind of film is pointless. Lord of the Flies (the book) is more graphic than is strictly necessary to the story, but without this element to shock and make the reader have to imagine what is hypothesised about people properly, the reader wouldn't take away with them or remember the impression it leaves of what ordinary people are capable of.
Also, I disagree that the actresses were exploited. Looking at this interview with Roth, it seems they were happy to do it:
http://www.411mania.com/movies/columns/55242/411-Movies-Interview:-Hostel-Part-2--Director-Eli-Roth.htm
'I think people were really surprised by the script. People loved the script. When the roles went out for the females, the auditions were booked up within an hour. People were fighting to get in the door.'
'The actors are doing the movie for these scenes. There's no question. Heather Matarazzo flew herself from New York to L.A. to do the scene. She was like: "I want to do this scene. I have to do this." She's naked and upside down. She's also hanging by her ankles with these chains. She was like: "No, no, I have to do this scene." We always film it at the end of the shoot. By that time, everyone is warmed up and feels comfortable with each other. The key is letting your actors feel safe. They have to feel safe physically and emotionally. They have to trust you. Once they trust you, they can really go to that place of darkness. You have to let them know that you're there to hold their hand and help guide them through it.'
There's more I could quote but it would be too much.

Then how in God's name did they end up with Bijou Phillips?

As a film major I find it a direct insult that this man is allowed to have a career.
But...
NYU Film School. With honors. The man obviously has talent.

That's lovely. NYU is a wonderful school. But it doesn't make your opinion any more valid than mine.
I have not chastised anyone's opinion in this thread. I've merely stated my own.
I never stated what movies should contain and shouldn't contain.
I know what I find to be artistic and what I find to be a waste of film. And I have every right to state it.
It does upset me that this man is allowed to make such films. Would I like to see him out of work? Yes.
Can I accomplish that? No.
Would I if I could? No, because I don't have the right to deny fans of this "genre" what they want to see.
I can, however, give my opinion on it, which I have.

You have every right to state it, true, what you do NOT have the right to do is tell people that they have something wrong with them if they do enjoy those movies. Hence all the attacks you have recieved, and all your criticism.

Everyone has different opinions.
I have stated that getting enjoyment out of watching the acts being performed in these moves is wrong. That's my opinion.
I haven't attacked anyone personally.
I can take a difference in opinion without resorting to personal attacks unlike certain people in this thread.
It takes an insecure person to resort to personal attacks.
I have no need to do so.

When I say I enjoy these movies, and you reply that anyone who does has something wrong with them - how is that not personal?

While you most likely meant it as a general statement, there are members on this board, tazber included, that do enjoy these movies, and therefore that statement IS a personal attack.
Remember, just because you don't mean something to be personal, does not mean that people who read it, won't.

I made a generalization, taz.
I never made a specific attack against you or replied to your enjoyment with a vicious remark.
You're allowed to state your opinon as am I. I haven't once tried to discredit you.
If you take it as a personal attack, that's your choice.
But notice I haven't responded to anyone's opinion here with the level of hostility they have aimed at me.

"But getting enjoyment out of watching someone tortured, dismembered or killed is just sick. Defend it until you turn blue in the face. Fiction or not, if you enjoy watching it...there's something wrong there."
I was wondering that too Taz.

"If you take it as a personal attack, that's your choice."
Not exactly. If someone says, "I love chocolate eclairs" and you reply, "Anyone who eats chocolate eclairs is a sick pathetic moron with no life and the personality of lead shavings", then it can easily be construed as a personal attack because the one who gave the reply was completely aware the person who made the original statement would be included in the insulting response.

You would be correct.
But, the statement that people are having problems with was made in my original post.
Thus, not aimed at a specific person.

Just for the record , that statement quoted above was indeed made after I posted several times that I enjoy the Hostel films.
But, it's clear from your posts today that you meant no personal attack so let us simply agree to disagree.
No harm, no foul.

As long as people keeping on going to see his movies, he will continue to make them
The reviews I have read about Hostel & # 2 are enough to keep me away. I do not think paying to see people mutilated & disemboweled or tortured is cinema
Seeing movies of this type reminds me of the crowds at the Coliseum in ancient Rome watching gladiators slice each other to ribbons for their amusement
