She must have really hated Cadillac Records.
"Beyonce's gonna get her ass whooped"
I always enjoy reading the comments at the end of articles such as this.
Oh, Dottie, I didn't have the strength, but I can imagine where they went. I'll bet people who have never even heard of Etta James are suddenly big fans because they're confusing this resentment with some sort of statement of political beliefs.
I too wondered why Etta wasn't asked to sing at the ball...then again, maybe it was an effort to reach the younger masses. Either way, I love Etta and am in no way a Beyonce apologist (in fact, I'm unbelievably sick of her), but this was...unnecessary. I'm just going to blame it on Etta being drunk as a skunk.
Calvin, the comments ran the gamut!

Is it a rule that all celebrities have to become completely ungracious and pathetic as they age their way into irrelevancy?
Actually, Faye Dunaway started pretty early on.

She makes fun of the way the president looks, rolls out the "He's not MY President!" then says she was sick and couldn't have attended the inauguration anyway- Good lord, Etta, how many reasons do you need not to be there?

Ha! Fair enough, but my god, I don't know why we're supposed to celebrate the nasty, mean-spirited sour-grapiness of some people because of their age and former stature.
Bitter, party of one!

Beyonce: Evolving since the beginning, with a long career ahead of her.

Girls! Girls! They are both loathsome in their own way!
I can respect Etta's career without respecting her current actions. She's a legendary performer who recently acted like a jealous raging bitch. If she doesn't even like Obama, why does she care so much? Oh yeah, because she wasn't asked. Now we know why. Would she have been as pissed if Beyonce sang someone else's song? Did she say anything about Aretha? Probably not. I wonder how she would have felt if Aretha sang an Etta song. HA!
Etta James rules.
Etta James rules, but is an asshole.
Next thing you know she'll say she was supposed to attend, but Aretha wore her hat!

I think it's more like the original artists recognize the lack of talent these days. It infuriates me as well.

Be careful Etta, Beyonce doesn't have any ass to whoop. Have you seen her? There's nothing there. No sense in hurting yourself over an assless girl.
The article says she wasn't able to attend the inaugeration due to health reasons. So WTF is she freaking out about? And why is she taking it out on Beyonce?

Because you don't steal a diva's signature song and sing it at the decade's biggest social event.

So - by that logic - all the caterwauling Jennifer Holliday has done over the years is justified?

Can you imagine the can off ass-whoop Beyonce would have opened if she had sung:
Liza Minnelli's "Cabaret"
Barbra Streisand's "People"
Elaine Stritch's "Ladies Who Lunch"
Bette Midler's "The Rose"

You are correct. And it's a shame, too, because nothing would have thrilled the country more than hearing "The Ladies Who Lunch" at the inauguration. Or "Cabaret," even. Although no one but people on this board and Elaine Stritch herself would even know that song.
Did Etta flip out when Celine covered "At Last"?
Does Liza sh*t a brick each time Cabaret is revived?
Is "The Rose" REALLY the go to song for Bette Midler?
None of these songs are proprietary.
