Beyonce was asked to sing the song and she did it.
I wonder if Lena Horne kicked Etta's ass when she covered Stormy Weather?

"And it's a shame, too, because nothing would have thrilled the country more than hearing "The Ladies Who Lunch" at the inauguration."
Oh, Phyllis. You just made me laugh in front of my boss.
I'd like to think that Etta was (mostly) kidding.

I guess it would have been fun seeing the camera pan to Cheney in his wheelchair during the "everybody rise" part.

And Joe Biden could have rolled out his line: Stand up Dick and let everybody see you.
All I know is when I hear Etta sing those first two words of At Last, I get goosebumps (a good thing).
By the way, "At Last" was played at all the Inaugural Balls. Could it be that President Obama requested that song?

Doesn't matter. Any chance for people to foster their Beyonce hatred will be not be passed upon.

I don't get it. She's talented, gorgeous, classy and (seemingly) nice.
^I have no hatred for Beyonce. Just love for Etta.
Although I'm not generally a fan of the type of music Beyonce does, I do think she seems like a very sweet person.

I believe you, Jane. Some folks, however, go apoplectic at the mere mention of her name. I like Etta, too; I just think that her comments were ridiculous.
I'm with you, Phyllis. Love Etta, love the song. But I also think Beyonce is enormously talented, and Etta's remarks--even if somewhat understandable--don't reflect well on her.
Her remarks don't bother me. We've had several discussions on here regarding the separation of person and performance.
However, in the Hillary Duff/Fay Dunaway case, I don't think Duff has the goods nor the personality.
sorry, I saw this double post coming!
I had thought that Etta James was dead!
Anyways the real she's probably mad is because the overweight black woman in her 70's that got to sing AND wear THE hat was Mrs. Franklin...not her :)
For those who are talking out of their asses:
Etta is still recording albums (about one every 18 months) which always hit number one on the Blues charts.
She also preforms in support of all of them.
She is competely relevant within her genre.
Her work spans blues and r&b with equal aplomb, and her influence on the latter is immeasurable.
Nothing anti-Beyonce here, but Etta is recognized as a legend for a reason.
There are posters on here who have met her and said she is gracious and kind.
Here, here Taz!
Etta who?
Get over your sourness, diva. It's ugly.

Taz, it's a shame that she's not a little more gracious then, that's all.
She's got a point, and she could have spoken it more nicely.
I've always thought of Etta James as the height of perfection, so hearing her comments today was especially jarring. (Mostly) kidding or not, there was no class or style behind the statements. It sounded like a person who felt threatened. I felt cheapened just by listening.
"She's got a point, and she could have spoken it more nicely."
But she doesn't have a point. She sang the song and has the most famous (by far) version of it.
But that doesn't mean no one else can sing it.
I really love Etta's voice and her albums, but these comments reflect extremely poorly on her.
I thought Barack and Michelle's first dance to "At Last" was a beautiful moment, and Beyonce getting teary-eyed made it even more touching. I'm glad it was her performing the song instead of Etta, because it doesn't sound like Etta would have taken it to heart the way Beyonce did.
