re: FANNY

Jose names an eighteenth-century English novelist and I name a comic strip from Playboy...maybe it's time to broaden my literary horizons.

Well, NCGuy, I kinda think more people read PLAYBOY than 18th Century English Diaries... re: FANNY

re: FANNY

I've only ever heard this song sung by Robert Goulet, but it is amongst my favourites!

Only you, long as I may live, Fanny, Fanny, Fanny.
You, long as I may live, Fanny,
If I could love, That's what I would say.
But my heart isn't mine to give.
Fanny, Fanny, Fanny.
No, no not mine to give.
Fanny,
For it is gone, given long ago
To the sea, my one love in her gray green clothes,
deep with wonders beyond the shore;
To the isles 'neath the winds where the spice wood grows.
I must know them all, or sleep no more!
Here's a boy with no heart to give,
Fanny, Fanny, Fanny.
Not worth one tear you'll cry,
Fanny,
Oh, Fanny, goodbye!

re: FANNY

When the Jones Beach Marine Theater was presenting lavish productions of Broadway musicals, I truly wanted them to do FANNY. I love the score and the setting on Zach's Bay would have lent itself beautifully to the story's French seaport. (Anyone who saw their SOUTH PACIFIC knows how effective the Bay was used in that show! Same thing with AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS) I actually wrote a letter to Guy Lombardo, the producer, suggesting this. He sent me a personal letter thanking me but said that they do family-oriented shows at Jones Beach and there was the whole issue of Fanny's pregnancy that was unsuitable for families. Remember, this was in 1969 or 70.

I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

re: FANNY

I have nothing new to add; but still contend that Robert Goulet's rendition of the tune, as sung on THE JULIE ANDREWS HOUR, remains sublime.

re: FANNY

Be sure to catch the film FANNY (1961), with Leslie Caron and Hortz Buchholz. It's a lovely movie, directed by Joshua Logan, and, as mentioned earlier, uses the fabulous music from Harold Rome's musical score.

Leslie breaks your heart, and Hortz couldn't be more hortz.

Maurice Chevalier and Charles Boyer add thier Gallic charm.

Filmed on location in Marseille.

re: FANNY

I'm with you, Quise.

"Almost 19-year-old Marius feels himself in a rut in Marseille, his life planned for him by his cafe'-owning father, and he longs for the sea. The night before he is to leave on a 5-year voyage, Fanny, a girl he grew up with, reveals that she is in love with him, and he discovers that he is in love with her. He must choose between an exciting life at sea, and a boring life with the woman he loves. And Fanny must choose between keeping the man she loves, and letting him live the life he seems to want."

To continue Jose's synopsis:

Maruis sleep with Fanny, then sneaks out the next morning to go off to sea. He is unaware that, in addition to taking her virginity, he has also gotten her pregnant.

Panisse, a widow in his 50's (and best friend of Maurius' father Cesar), has been wooing the much younger Fanny for a while. She finally agrees to marry him, then guiltily tells him she is pregnant with Marius' child. Panisse agrees to marry hwer anyway. He always wanted a child - and if they marry right away, no one will know he is not the father. Of course, Cesar figures out that his son Marius is the real father, but agress to keep the secret.

That's just Act I - all sorts of complications pop up in Act 2 - with a real tear jerker of an ending.
