Famous People You've Been Lucky Enough To Meet

Addy, that's very cool!

Throughout my life growing up with close relatives in the business and various jobs over the years (actor, musician, box office manager for Second City, waitstaff for Forbidden Broadway in NY, DVD/Blu-ray graphics and content producer and designer), I have met and befriended many famous folks.

Too many to name. Some have been brief encounters, some lifelong friends, some site-specific relationships for certain jobs. They're just like everyone else, in that some are nice, some are not, some are smart, some are not. Many of them lead extraordinary lives, but they are still people, faults and all, talents and all.

Famous People You've Been Lucky Enough To Meet

I've met many "famous" people through the years. The one that always stands out most is Jill Clayburgh. I was sitting at the bar at Joe Allen's and saving a bar stool in the corner for a friend. I had my coat on it, so no one would sit there. It was pretty dark at the bar and this woman behind me says "Is anyone sitting there" Well without turning around I said rather rudely. "Yes, that's why there's a coat on it!" For some odd reason I turned around mid sentence to see the sweet voice was Jill Clayburgh's. I quickly said, "oh I'm sorry there's an pen bar stool now on this side of me. I'll save this one. She happily smiled and said" It's easily to sit here and read my paper unnoticed." She sat quietly reading her paper and when I got up to leave she softly said "Thank you for giving me this seat." What a doll!

Thanks jbara! Definetly a life highlight!

I have met so many famous people over the years. I once chatted with James Brown in his dressing room at the Uptown in Phiy while he was only wearing underwear and a T shirt.

Most recently I was thrilled to meet and chat with Bebe Newirth and chat briefly with The Audra.

Years ago I met Charles Nelson Reilly (he was sitting behind me) after a performance of "Robeson" starring James Earl Jones. He directed it and was very interested in my opinion of the show. We chatted for about 10 mimutes. That was pretty cool. He was much different than his tv persona. Very serious.

Famous People You've Been Lucky Enough To Meet

A personal favorite is a wonderful lunch I had with Michael Keaton about fifteen years ago. Extremely intelligent and personable guy...and a true lover of the regionally-popular New Jersey breakfast meat pork roll.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Geraldo was there with Woody Allen and Soon-Yi that night too.

With Joe DiMaggio.

But, for the record, neither of us blew them or met them, so this is off-topic.

We were also there with Don Rickles, and we did meet him. I don't recall if Reggie blew him or not.

"degrassi, if they ever bring back the surreal life, that would be a perfect cast!"

HAHAHAHA, Calvin you are SO right! Now that I look at it, the list of people I've met seems like they would belong in the cast of The Surreal Life, Celebrity Apprentice, or even Dancing with the Stars. Wow, what does that even say about me? Lol :)

Famous People You've Been Lucky Enough To Meet

I literally ran into William Hurt on CPW where I lived at the time. The same yr he won the Oscar. '85? Pathetic story, really...he was w/his little boy, about 2, and asked if I wanted to hang out in the pk? What?? Long story short, he was VERY depressed, and wanted somebody "nice" to talk to. (I'm thinking at the time - what, YOU have no friends? Lucky me! WRONG...) The park was nice, but a sadder story I have never heard. What a mess he was. Never believe the "movie star image hype."

Famous People You've Been Lucky Enough To Meet

Two favorites, both the same year (198Famous People You've Been Lucky Enough To Meet and both related to the dream job I had eons ago. Back then, I was the movie editor for a TV listings company--if you read the one sentence movie descriptions between '86 and '89 in your newpaper's TV guide, they may have been written by me--and along with that came the opportunity to attend a VSDA convention and a couple of network press tours in Manhattan.

First favorite happened at the VSDA convention in Vegas. Fair amount of celebrities promoting their movies coming to VHS (I know) and I'm waiting in line for something and I start chatting with this lady behind me, telling her my goal for the week was to meet Ricki Lake, who has just broken out in "Hairspray." Turns out the lady was her mother Jill, so thanks to her I had a nice moment with Ricki. Ricki also showed up at the blackjack table at my hotel and between the two brief encounters, when I went to her signing for "Hairspray," I got a sweet "Hi Jim." Made my day.

Second one was during a press tour. We were sent on a cruise around Manhattan with the cast of "Tattinger's," who held a Q & A session and then sat down with us for dinner. One star at each table and I and my tablemates were surpremely lucky to have Blythe Danner with us. She was planning a certain someone's 16th birthday at the time and was so sweet. I'd seen Woody Allen's "Another Woman" that afternoon, which she was in for literally about 30 seconds, and she made light of that and then congratulated me on my (then) engagement. That still ranks as my all-time favorite celebrity encounter.
