I have two:

Citizen Ruth
and
Vera Drake

Two movies that could not be more dissimilar, yet two of the best films on the subject with BRILLIANT lead performers and fantastic supporting players.

PEACE.

If These Walls Could Talk. Three very different stories from different eras with very different endings. It's one of my favorites.

If These Walls Could Talk was good but Cher got wicked dramatic and fake at the end. i couldn't get down with that last bit.

I admire what was attempte in WALLS, however I felt the whole film was a little overly melodramatic and preachy.

Dude, she got all SHOT and SH*T. It's the only Cher movie where she dies. (Except maybe Chastity, but I could only stomach that once, so I can't remember.) I just can't take it.

Walls 2 was better. More girl on girl action.

Y'all should see "Lake of Fire"...a documentary about abortion by the guy who made "American History X"...it's a really powerful film.

Of the ones listed here, I've only seen the WALLS movies. Vanessa Redgrave is amazing in WALLS 2.

I haven't seen any of these others. I'll have to check them out.

I always felt WALLS was rather a dark and scary view of abortion...at least for the women having the abortions. I mean, (spoilers ahead), you have Demi Moore slowly bleeding out to death from a botched abortion in the first segment, then earth mother Sissy Spacek* valiantly deciding to keep her baby no matter how big the brood she already had, and then, of course, poor Anne Heche, freaking the f*ck out as Cher is gunned down in the middle of the procedure in the third segment (though it had a classic line reading of the words "I'm Jewish" from Oscar nominee Diana Scarwid). It all felt very DON'T HAVE AN ABORTION OR YOU WILL DIE!!!! No matter the actual intent.

WALLS 2 was infintely better, featuring a really rather broad, mature and involving view of lesbian issues from partner rights to the butch/femme divide to parenting. Really terrific film.

*Sissy Spacek, who seems to love having troubled fetuses, was absolutely spectacular in the HBO film A PRIVATE MATTER in which she starred as a Romper Room host who was pregnant with a thalydomide baby and had to go to Sweden or some such place to abort. Her breakdown with Aidan Quinn in the backyard was thrilling.

Sissy's breakdowns are always thrilling.

Although the original WALLS has an excellent perf from Miss Heche.

And wasn't Jada Pinkett (pre-Smith) her sassy black friend?

I agree, borstal...I remember thinking, "who is this girl?" Jada Pinkett? Not so much.

It's also the only good performance I've seen from Demi Moore.

Sassy and pro-life, too, wasn't she (in the movie)?

And yeah, the movie is sort of heavy handed, but I thought that was sort of the point. Women were dying before it was legalized and even after legalization women are still dying, although it's not the procedure they're dying from anymore. I don't know. Hamfistedness aside, it's one of the few unflinching looks at abortion to come out of Hollywood, I think.

This is tv, but remember when Ricki Lake had an abortion in that Betrayal/Merrilly We Roll Along-type episode of "China Beach"?
