I am so glad to find figure skating fans in this board.

My first idol is Kristi Yamaguchi when she won her 1992 Olympic gold . That's my first time watching Winter Olympic figure skating and her "Blue Danube Waltz" totally got me.

The next girl is Lu Chen. Her "Butterfly lover" in 1998 Olympic completely broke my heart. For me, even though Lipski was the champion, Lu-Lu was the best in that program. No one had ever make me so into the music, the mood and the charater before.

And of course, my all time favorite, Michelle, the most elegant, artistic and dedicated lady on ice.

I love Sasha a lot. She got that kind of fire and passion. I am so happy that she finally breaks from the past and wins her national gold.

For male, ah, my hero is Alex Yagudin. That perfect "IronMask Man" will be in my memory forever.

And I am a big Todd Eldredge fan since I first saw him in winter Olympic as well. He got that kind of gentle yet sincere, down-to-earth yet romantic charm, like a poet.

And I love a French guy named Philip Candeloro who is the hottest ,most lively person on ice.

This national champioship I like Matt Savvio very much. Maybe he made one mistake, but his program is the most artistic, sensitive one for me. I don't know why, Jonny Weir's program maybe had less flaw, but didn't get me.

For Pairs, my pray goes to Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao and all Chinese athletes.

CAROLINA COSTNER did skate in the grand prix this year, but not to great success. she placed LAST at both SKATE CANADA and NHK.

i DO enjoy her skating. she's very pretty when she holds it together. does anyone else think she looks a bit like mary louise parker?

Last Place at both those events? Man, that's not good at all.

Yeah she does look like MLP, I never thought of that though. I guess it's in the face, like the eyes, mouth, teeth and nose. :)

I have yet to get to see John Curry Skate, however I do know his story and it's a sad ending Figure Skating Chat

Carolina Kostner (not Costner) is known to peak later in the season. I would not put too much weight on her NHK, SC placements. She herself says she is never ready that early in the season.

I'm not sure that Caolina's records indicate she peaks at the end. In fact, if anything, it shows she peaks when she skates clean -- which is occasionally every once in a while. She, of course, ends many years with a good finish at Italian nationals, but...come on, who is she competing against?

Her best finish ever was at world's in 2005 --3rd. And she skated the best she had ever skated then. BUT, she skated to a 7th place finished at Both skate Canada AND the European championships right around the same time.

touchme- I see your point, but I was referring to some interviews with Carolina and her track record at the early Grand Prixs in the October time frame.

I just watched the Sasha Cohen interview on The Tonight Show (Leno), which was from a few nights ago. She said that she had re-introduced the Carlotta spiral (is that the name?)

I'm pretty sure it was Michelle Kwan who had re-introduced it. Anyone else remember?

Sort of answering my own question. I looked it up, it's called a Charlotte spiral, and Michelle was performing it at the 2000 Worlds, if not before. I think I also read that Rudy Galindo used it in 1999.

So if Sasha "re-introduced" the move, it would have been when she was skating in juniors. Hmmm...

Thanks Everyone!

I start rehearsals for my play on the 2-20-06, so I'm going to be taping what I miss(In fact, I'm going to be taping EVERYTHING!) Hopefully I'll get to watch the ladies events live, or maybe rehearsal will be over by then.

Anyways, about Sasha and the Charlotte Spiral(Is that how you spell it, Charlotte?).
Well, I know that Michelle was doing them on the big scene before Sasha, but then again, I really didn't see Sasha until 2001. Rudy Galindo also does it, but doesn't get as much flexibility.
However, True to ALL Spirals, Sasha's are the best and the same is true to her Charlotte Spiral, which I have not seen in her programs this year!!!!!!

Sasha does have the best spirals. I just thought it was interesting that she seemed to be re-writing history a bit. Anyhow, I can't wait to see Sasha wearing Zulema's outfit from Project Runway. Which reminds me of the Olympics with Tonya Harding. Does anyone remember the story of a group of women who were supporters of hers and they had an outfit made that they sent to her. The cameras were rolling when Tonya opened the package. I remember at the time that I didn't think she particularly liked the outfit when she saw it, and I don't recall her ever wearing it. Does anyone else remember that?

Anytime, Jane2! I know how important it is to schedule ones time around the figure skating competitions!!

Regarding Tonya's outfit, I don't remember that particular incident, but anything had to be better than those ghastly creations she was wearing. I never liked her.

Well, I, in no way condone the incident with Tonya and Nancy. It was a criminal act all the way. That being said, I can't stand Nancy Kerrigan, never could, and the trash element in me loves Tonya. I hate what she and her cohorts did, but I liked the way she skated (costumes notwithstanding) much more than Nancy. Tonya was a much better athlete. IN MY OPINION

I felt that Nancy Kerrigan was kind of dull to watch (with the exception of her gorgeous skating outfits). Although Tonya was an excellent athlete, she just had that trash on ice appeal.

I've never got to see a full program of Tonya, just clips! I'd LOVE to see her 1994 Olympic ROMP to Jurassic Park. However, my 1994 video does have a fairly lenghty clip of her short program.

Here is my opinion on Tonya. I really feel bad for her. From what I understand, it was MOSTLY her husband(or ex-husband) Jeff's idea (last name sounds like Galooly:). And that her part was more minor. Although, I guess she DID have some part in the whole thing, so I guess she is not TOTALLY innocent.

However, that incident put ice skating on the map! There was a HUGE BOOM for professional Skating opportunities and she couldn't participate in ANYTHING. And since we know her background, she could have actually have used the money. So I feel bad that she can't skate pro because she's the reason for that industry to do so well.
But at the same time, I get kind of upset with her decision. She was probably one of the greatest skating athlete's EVER. You can buy talent like that! So if she would have just played the game better, things would have gone her way.
She could do the triple axel, but at times(the 1992 Olympics) she was inconsistant at it. However, she didn't need to do it!!!!!!! Her jumping was better than anyone out there(except for maybe Midori Ito who was also having some jumping problems at the 1992 Games)!!!!!! If she would have put her triple axel work into a good triple-triple combination thing would have been better.
Also her music, she skated to ZZ Top and was advised to pick something not so brash. We always admire those who do it "their way" but if she would have just played the game better things would have gone better for her. I mean she didn't have to skate to light romantic music, but surely someone could have come up with a better style for her, which they kinda did later on, like 1994ish.

Anyways, what I'm saying is that with smarter decesion from her as an athlete or from her coach she could have totally become the 1992 Olympic Champion.
Would she have stayed until 1994? Probably not. Would skating be robbed of one of its most interesting stories ever. Probably yes, Unless Kristi Yamaguchi decided to whack Nancy that year!!!!!!

Anyways those are basically my thoughts!

But since we're on the subject of "skaters from the other side of the tracks" who had it ALL and more or less threw it down the drain due to different reasons, let's not forget the skater whom I think really did have it all:

Nicole Bobek!!!!!! That's another story......

I prefer Tonya's costume. Anyday. Evening gowns are for fabulous parties and not on the ice.

I like the idea of a girl who may have been from a trailer park who could get the chance to elevate herself in life. It doesn't always have to be those rich little girls whose parents can afford to pay the gazillions it takes to raise a figure skater. I'm sure Tonya couldn't afford to have Vera Wang design a gown for her costume. Too bad things went so wrong.

Actually, I think Tonya's short program was skated to "Moon River".

Nancy was also an inconsistent skater. She medaled in the 92 Olympics and Worlds, but who could forget her disastrous skate at the 93 Worlds.

Kristi Yamaguchi had already turned pro by the 94 Olympics, so I doubt she'd have any reason to whack Nancy!! And lo and behold, there was a young, Michelle Kwan waiting in the wings.
