Wooo figure skating!
Olympic predictions? Favorites? Unfavorites?
I love skating! I hope michelle can start competing soon... I'd be soooo excited if she does well at the olympics, she's still in the running for it right?
Well, I hope this goes through, my computer has been having problems.
Anyways, I saw Sasha Cohen's LP on Monday and it's AMAZING. It's such a beautiful and emotional program to Romeo and Juliet. If she hits, I think she'll win.
Irina Slutskaya, whom I LOVE and will always defend, is on fire too. She seems much in a better state than 4 years ago and I think she'll walk away with another medal. The new scoring system is doing her well. All those Bielmann's are worth a lot.
Michelle will compete for the first time at the nationals, so she won't get international judges to see her program. I think she lost a lot of ground last season. Hopefully she'll get a better program than Bolero.

KMF is a hugh fan, let's see if he shows up here?
Also, I hope that the law(or admendment or whatever)that will allow Tanith and Ben get to compete gets passed. I guess it will also allow Melissa Gregory and Denis Petkuhov to compete too.
They ran a story of how David Mitchell's(who placed 4th in ice dance with his partner at the 2004 Nationals but missed the 2005 Nationals)mother wrote a letter to Hilary Clinton asking her not to allow the bill to pass.
However, if it wasn't for Tanith and Ben that third ice dance spot wouldn't have been available, and Mitchell and his partner can probably qualify for that third spot anyways.
This is the GAYEST thread ever!
I'm a fan too! Sasha's problem is that she's not consistent so it's hard to predict. She could be first or last! Irina, I agree, is in better shape than ever. I like her but she lacks a certain grace that other skaters have. As for Michelle, maybe her time has come and gone. She skates perfection but I think she's being challenged by newcomers. This competition should be interesting.
As for the men, I've been a Plushy fan for ages. He's number one for me, but I also like Johnny Weir. Again, he's not consistent either. I always have my fingers crossed when he skates.
I'm sorry to have to add this but I really dislike what's his name Goebel's skating. First of all, his posture leaves a lot to be desired-he's kind of hunchbacked on the ice. He used to be a good jumper but for the last few seasons he's fallen all over the place. Between jumps he's got no choreography to speak of. I guess I took care of him, haven't I? Sorry, lol.
awww, timmy. I was convinced he'd challenge for gold back in 2002, but I think his best days are over. He's had great results 2001 National Champ, 2002 Olympic Bronze Medalist and 2002 and 2003 World Silver Medalist, but I don't think he'll get another major medal.
Johnny Weir and Evan Lysacek are sure contenders for the Olympic team leaving one spot. I think it's really a battle between Michael Weiss and Tim. Ryan Janke and Matt Savoie(sp.?) will be contenders too. Personally, I hope that Michael Weiss takes the 3rd spot.
it can only be the gayest thread ever if someone mentions dry cleaning. my neighbor is convinced that dry cleaning is what separates the gays from the straights.
i hope sasha has a clean program. i'm curious to see if kimmie meisner has grown at all.
Kimmie Skated at the same competition I saw Sasha in, I can't recall the name off-hand because it has a new name. Anyways, she had several falls. But she still looked as thin as a rake.
Johnny's an artist.
He is one with the music.
I recently watched figure skating and realized I didn't know a single one of the competetors. I was a big fan at one time, but I somehow stopped following for a while and now, the skaters that i loved, don't seeem to be competing any more. They must be too old. I'm a fan from back in the old days of Katarina Witt, Krisie Yamaguchi, Oksana Baieul, Paul Wiley, Todd Eldridge and Kurt Browning.
Kurt Browning - thump thump
Orion, LOVE your painting in your photo (it IS yours, isn't it?) Anyway, yeah, you haven't watched in a loooong time. Usually competitors go on to professional skating and the new ones move up. Also, the skills seem to get harder with time (quads are now necessary). I could care less if a skater can do a quad. I'm more impressed with style. To me, the jumps come second. Oh well, I'm different.
skate chat! yay!
i've been watching all of the ISU grand prix events. SO much fun JEFFREY BUTTLE (canada) is the best male skater this season. the choreography for both his short and long is intricate and amazing. his component scores are so high that he can blow jumps and still win. if he lands all of his jumps too -- look out!
i also have the major hots for BRIAN JOUBERT (france), but he's more about power than artistry, and his moves are not rarely very original, so i don't enjoy his skating as much.
and of course there's reigning world champion STEPHANE LAMBIEL (switzerland). he's off to an uneven start this year, but if he peaks in FEB like he peaked in MAR last year, look out gold medal! the best spinner EVER.
Oh yes, Stephane! I really liked his skating, though his music was just okay(for me) last year.
I hope the judges don't think that Plushenko is still untouchable, because I don't feel that he is. I guess I'm tired of him or something.
Did anyone see the cup of Russia competition today? I taped it. If I ever even for a second tried to imagine anyone better than Plushenko, well his short program erased that possibility. He set a new world's record with his score. I don't think there's anyone who has the degree of skills he has in balletic expertise, athleticism, grace, speed and jumping. To me no one comes near. If they did, I'd be open to entertaining the thought! Even Johnny Weir, whom I love, looked pale (no, not only his face) but his program. He had to follow Plushenko.

I think the new rule changes makes all the programs look like practice sessions. Most of the spins everyone, esp. the men, are coming up with, are grotesque. Then trying to do the difficult jumps at the end of a program to earn more points is ludicrous. Most of this season I have watched more falls than any really good programs. But I will wait until Nationals and the Olympics before I really rant about the new changes. For the most part, and I do say most part, the new programs are awful.
I just read on MSN that it looks highly unlikely that Michelle will be competing at Nationals. She's still hampered by a back/hip injury. She was only able to complete double jumps during her last exhibition.
ack! I feel so bad for Michelle ... to stick it out this long at such a high level has always been so amazing for me. We're pretty much the same age and when I look at all the different phases and body changes and weight changes and different things I've been through over the past 12 years versus the fact that she's had the drive to get up and work towards one goal all day every day for all that time ... it's just impressive. But even though I was sad for Michelle not to win the last olympics I agreed with the decision that Sarah's program was great.
I like Kimmie too, she lives near here and when I was in college she skated at my school so I've seen her progress from little jumping girl to teenage jumping girl. :)
In other related news, my cat LOVES male singles skating. I think it has to do with the usually dark outfits on the white background on TV. During spins that last more than a few seconds he bounds across the room and starts pawing at the guy spinning. It's really funny to watch!!
Good news for Tanith Belbin (ice dancing)- the Senate passed a measure which would allow her to gain US citizenship in time to compete at the Olympics!

I'm all about Matt Savoie after seeing his amazing skate at the Marshalls Challenge. I can't honestly say I have liked a male skater as much in years and years.
It's obvious to me that if Sasha Cohen skates well, no one can beat her -- even my goddess (and the one I hope wins it all), Michelle Kwan. And, that little 15 year old from Japan is gonna kick some major butt when she gets old enough to win -- I mean, she whips out triple axels like they're a spiral sequence.
News from today: Sergey Magerovskiy was sworn in as a US citizen, so he will be able to make the team with his partner, Tiffany Stiegler. Also, on the 22nd, The bill containing a provision regarding citizenship for aliens of extraordinary ability – including that of U.S. ice dancing champion Tanith Belbin – has been passed by both houses of Congress. The bill will next proceed to the White House to be signed by President Bush. I doubt Bush would not sign it.
I'm excited to se the US Championship in January. Anything could happen. Who knows? Michelle may not even make the team.
