Posted: 4/29/13 at 12:40pmHe's not the first gay athlete. We had a player on the Jaguars that was out. There have been plenty more who have come out. Now- he may be the first NBA player to come out- but I can't say that for sure.

Posted: 4/29/13 at 12:49pmNot sure who on the Jaguars was out, but Collins is considered the first player in one of the major teams sports (football, baseball, basketball, hockey) to come out of the closet. Certainly, there have been openly gay athletes in the past, most notably Martina Navratilova.

"First gay athlete" sounds great, but it's not accurate. Athletes have come out after retiring, and there are non-team athletes (like Orlando Cruz) who are out. And there are more than a few female athletes, team-sport and non-team, who are out: Sheryl Swoops came out in 2005 while she was still actively playing in the WNBA.

I know this was said in jest, but wouldnt it be great if they did get together and denounce bigotry on both sides? both guys are universally known in the lockerroom as kind and giving fellows. that would truly make a difference.
