So far, everything is going for much higher than it was valued!

Charlie Chaplin's bowler hat just sold for $110,000. It was valued at $20K to 30K.
Wow! Good for Debbie! I can only imagine what Marilyn Monroe's iconic dress will go for!
Claudette Colbert's dress from Cleopatra was valued at $20K to 30K and just sold for $40K.
Marilyn's Seven Year Itch dress is valued at 1 to 2 million. I'll bet it sells today for closer to 3 million, at this rate. And that will be a new record.
Why doesn't she try to sell the "lesser known" items and use that money to still try to open a museum?
Maybe she owed too much. But I think she just can't afford to maintain it on her own, and she's tried for years to open a permanent museum. She's almost 80 now, so maybe she's tired.
As far as "lesser known" stuff. Another "wow" just sold...
W.C. Fields' joke box and word play archive---which was valued at $3,000. Just sold for $35,000. I'll bet some rich comedian bought it.
WC Field's joke box
I just a a piece of an interview with Nigel Lythgoe (sp?) and said that Debbie will be the guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance next week. (I think he said next week)
I didn't quite realise the extent of Debbie's collection...shame to see it scat ered to the four corners of the globe. I'm sure this is a bittersweet moment for her, but hopefully she'll now be able to rest on her laurels and enjoy her old age. I hope she gets more than enough to cover any debts she may have.
If I had money coming out of my ears, I would have bought the Greta Garbo dress from Anna Karenina. Are the catalogues still available to purchase, I wonder?
The entire collection was valued at $10-20 million. I'll bet she makes close to $30 million today.
And I agree, Jay. I'm very sad to see it scattered to the wind.
I'm also very grateful that I got to see the whole thing when she had her hotel in Vegas, 15 years ago.
EDIT: What's up with the phantom posts?! I've had to post my last two comments twice for them to show up. The first time, it just goes into the twilight zone. Ugh! BWW is very glitchy today.
Besty, it's been that way for me for MONTHS. Only 1/3 of what I post show up.
I hate it, JG2! Too many scripting actions going on with these ads.
On a lighter note: a couch from "The Good Earth," valued at $4K to 6K just sold in a bidding war for $20K. I love that movie.
EDIT: And I just had to double-post again.
Judy's test dress and test "Arabian Shoes" from Wizard of Oz are up next ...
Maybe Luise Rainer herself bought that couch, best12!
I'm glad they didn't actually use those slippers in the movie.

"she'll now be able to rest on her laurels and enjoy her old age"
She's on the calendar to do her nightclub act at a theater in San Bernardino in February, 2012 - so I don't think that's really on her agenda
Judy's test dress (never worn on screen) from Wizard of Oz was valued at $60K ...
... and just sold for $910,000.
Shoes are next ...
Hm, no one's bidding on the shoes?
Never mind....java wasn't working. $510K. WOW.

Arabian Shoes just sold for $510,000.
An Emerald City jacket worn by some guy in the crowd, valued at $8K, just sold for $22,500.
The power of "Oz" has spoken!
Arg! None of the lives feeds are working for me....
sad face
So sorry, Diva! This is fascinating.
Apparently, quite a few people didn't get the news about a recession ... and they're all in Beverly Hills (or at least "virtually") today.
Keep trying, Diva. It took me a couple of times to access the feed. Just give it a bit of time.
So many things are coming in way over estimated value. Debbie must be pleased. But sad to be parting with this collection.
That's the way I see it, nygrl232.
I'm sure she's thrilled, relieved, and ultimately very sad. This collection meant so much to her, and she was such an advocate for the preservation of old Hollywood.
Methinks she needs a good bottle of wine (or four) with friends tonight. And yes, she can pick up the tab.
It's got to be really surreal to watch items you spent decades collecting, admiring, storing and maintaining vanish in a single afternoon. I hope Debbie is keeping something for herself and her family. She saw value in things when others threw them into warehouses and dusty crates. She deserves so much credit for her taste and passion.
The Sergeant York stuff (Gary Cooper) was nuts! Sold way above estimate. Uniform sold for $55K (valued at 20-30), and his rifle, valued at $3K just sold for 19K.
