For the last time, stop ... "feeling BADLY"

In the last week, I've heard Oprah (twice), John Edwards, Barbara Walters, a friend with a PhD, and who knows how many other highly educated folk sadly voice: "I feel BADLY" about so and so. Unless you're a masseur having a lousy day, or a hooker inept at particular task, you cannot "FEEL BADLY."
You feel BAD. It's simple: Bad is an adjective used to describe an emotional response. BADLY is an adverb used to modify a verb. The end. Period. Stop the madness, please. (And one other thing: "me" is not slang, not colloquial usage, not the equivalent of "ain't" -- not a word to be replaced in every situation with "myself" and quite often in fact, not properly replaced by "I." Just between you and me, Whitman's "Song of Myself" is overrated.)

Posted: 8/21/07 at 12:16pmHopefully, this abuse of the Language will be stopped. I am doubtful, nevertheless, the people will talk good. Most people could care less about using words rightfully.

The misuse of the pronoun "I" is more annoying to me than anything else on the planet. This all happened because they eliminated sentence diagramming from the curriculum!!!
The OBJECT of a preposition is in the OBJECTive case, get it??? (No, they don't.)
Yeesh.

"I could care less" (JoeKv beat me to that one)
"Myself" erroneously used in place of "Me"
"Whenever" erroneously used in place of "When"
Please add those to the list, too. Thanks in advance.

Miss Pennywise - I'm with you on the 'I' vs. 'me' misuse.
Unfortunately, poor grammar has gotten so prevalent that people think that proper grammar sounds funny. Here are some examples of proper grammar that most people would assume to be incorrect:
Do you want to go to the movies with Johnny and me?
Mike is taller than I.

Anyways, I could care less about my safety deposit box...I'll worry about it on Valentimes day.

Posted: 8/21/07 at 1:00pmHow about hopefully, as in "Hopefully, it'll rain today." Using hopefully as a sentence adverb is non-standard and therefore incorrect. What you should say instead is "I hope it rains today."

"I feel bad, that you feel bad about me feeling bad, about you feeling bad....."
Ok, I'm done now.
But seriously, not everyone is perfect and while it may be VERY annoying, there's not much that can be done about it.
The thing that annoys me the most is the misspelling of there, they're, and their. It's not difficult, but many people honestly don't know the difference.

Not I. Said the Cat.
Not I. Said the Dog.

Look at her a prisoner of the gutter
Condemned by every syllable she utters
By rights she should be taken out and hung
For the cold-blooded murder of the English tongue
Aw!
Aw! Heavens what a sound!
This is what the British population
Calls an elementary education
Oh come sir, I think you picked a poor example!
Did I?
Hear them down in Soho square
Dropping h's everywhere
Speaking English any way they like
You sir, did you go to school?
What do you tike me for, a fool?
No one taught him take instead of tike
Hear a Yorkishman or worse
Hear a Cornishman converse
I'd rather hear a choir singing flat
Chickens cackling in a barn, just like this one
G'on!
G'on! I ask you sir, what sort of word is that?
It's aw and g'on that keep her in her place
Not her wretched clothes and dirty face
Why can't the English
Teach their children how to speak
This verbal class distinction
By now should be antique
If you spoke as she does, sir
Instead of the way you do
Why you might be out selling flowers too
I beg your pardon, sir!
An Englishman's way of speaking
Absolutely classifies him
The moment he talks
He makes some other Englishmen despise him
One common language I'm afraid we'll never get
Oh why can't the English learn to
Set a good example
To people whose English is painful to your ears
The Scots and the Irish leave you close to tears
There even are places where English completely disappears
In America they haven't used it for years
Why can't the English
Teach their children how to speak
Norwegians learn Norwegian
The Greeks are taught their Greek
In France every Frenchman
Knows his language from A to Zed
The French don't care what they do actually
As long as they pronounce it properly
Arabians learn Arabian
With the speed of summer lightning
And the Hebrews learn it backwards
Which is absolutely frightening
But use proper English, you're regarded as a freak
Oh why can't the English
Why can't the English
Learn to speak!
