There seem to be a lot of people here who know good films. Any little known films you think other people should know about?
I got one.
"Leaving Normal" with Christine Lahti. Anyone remember it?

Posted: 1/26/07 at 6:23pm"Once Were Warriors" is a great film. One of my favorites. It also contains one of the greatest performances by an actress I have ever seen.

for schmaltzy romance: Music from Another Room with Jude Law, Gretchen Moll, Jennifer Tilly, Martha Plimpton, Jeremy Piven, and Brenda Blethyn.
for sci-fi comedy: Night of the Comet
my favorite romantic comedy of all time: The Palm Beach Story
pure '80s camp: the Apple and Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
and also they just released, or are about to release some films from the early '30s in a set called the Forbidden Hollywood collection on DVD: these are pre Hayes code movies, I saw them on video years ago and they're worth checking out.

THE BABY DANCE with Stockard Channing and Laura Dern. A phenomenal movie that almost no one has seen.
Another great one is TADPOLE. It's an adorable comedy about a 16-year-old prep school kid who is in love with his stepmother (played by Signourney Weaver). Bebe Neuwirth and John Ritter are also in it. It was purchased for a pretty penny at Sundance by Miramax, got great reviews, and then just went nowhere. Sad.

3 WOMEN has a pretty devout cult following. My favorite obscure Altman is his adaptation of Sam Sheperd's FOOL FOR LOVE, starring Sheperd and Kim Basinger.
Another really good one: THE FAST RUNNER, a movie entirely in Inuit (the Eskimo language).

Another great set(s) released in the past couple of years is the American Film Theatre series. I assume most of you may know about it already, but in case you don't check 'em out. Just of few of the titles are:
Albee's A Delicate Balance with Katherine Hepburn, Paul Scofield and Lee Remick.
Ionesco's Rhinocerous with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder together again.
And a truly fascinating piece: The Maids with Glenda Jackson and Susannah York. Strange, in a good way, with brilliant performances from the two leading ladies.

broadway86---Great list! I love that you mentioned Carnival of Souls. My dad's best friend directed and starred in it.
Brief Encounter is one of my favorites. And The Horse's Mouth is fantastic. One of Alec Guinness's best ever. I will add his "Kind Hearts and Coronets" to that.
This all depends on what kind of movies you like, and what you think of as "great," and hell, what you think of as "obscure" too... but here's a few more from various genres...
"Midnight" - Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, John Barrymore and Mary Astor. A brilliantly funny Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett screwball comedy that somehow has been lost in the shuffle a bit (probably because it came out in that HUGELY overachieving year of 1939).
The Legend of 1900
The Red Balloon (I'm horrified to think this is obscure now, but it is... and it's a masterpiece)
Lady for a Day (Capra)
The Man I Love
Dead Ringer (Bette Davis)
Ride the Pink Horse
Girl of the Night
Hamlet (Kenneth Brannagh)
Down in the Delta
Crumb
Eve's Bayou
Sunrise (1927)
Liliom (1934)
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane
Magic
The Bluebird (Shirley Temple)
Wings of Desire
Black Narcissus
Orpheus (Jean Cocteau)
Hoppity Goes to Town (animated)

Anything by Luis Bunuel:
Belle De Jour
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgesie
The Phantom of Libery
And one film I've come across recently that I found was fabulous:
Score (1973) directed by Radley Metzger
If you are looking for something that is so bad it's funny try:
Sextette (Mae West's final film from '7
