I got to sit in on a cattle call audtion today, and over 75% of the girls (not that well I may add) sang songs from those shows. And everytime the casting the director said, "oh gosh not again...." CASTING DIRECTORS HATE THOSE SONGS FOR AUDTIONS!!!!!!!!
What show was it for? What was the style of the show? I've heard people sing songs from Wicked for auditions for Camelot and Bells are Ringing. Not pretty.
Your right, the audition was for Zigfield Follies-esqe kinda show!

sometimes, i think people just don't think.
i think the way their logic works on that is that if everyone is telling people not to sing stuff from those shows, no one will.....and then they'll be the only one!!!! but the problem is that a LOT of people think like that - and then you end up with a situation like the unfortunate one you experienced.
ladies, there are other awesome shows out there, broaden your horizons....and for the good of the casting directors - THINK ABOUT THE SHOW YOU'RE AUDITIONING FOR!!
AMEN SISTA!
How about all the people who sing it in the lobby of the Gershwin.
You'd think they are hoping someone will hear 'em and cast 'em.
You have to be over 12!

ahhhh it was so annoying.
i went to see wicked back in feb...and i'm not going to lie, it's a very asthetically pleasing show. pretty colors, fun music, etc. still not my favorite, but entertaining.
i have a green peacoat. it's awesome, and i wear it all the time. i didn't realize that i was wearing it to see wicked (it's THAT color green).
all these little girls were running up to me asking me which gift shop they were selling them at. i was like, "seriously, it's mine. it's from the gap. it's not from here, and please go away!!!!"
and those same tweens were sitting in front of me and WOULD NOT stop singing during the show. it's not a sing-along DVD guys, it's live theatre.
Its like that at alot of the auditions i go to! OMG! it's annoying!

I thought by the title of this thread you just meant in general. I was like, well I like those shows. But I would NEVER sing them for auditions right now. Maybe in 20 years or something. But hey- if they do sing it, it gives you a better chance.
No, the good ones should keep singing those songs. It's the bad ones who should look for new material

I agree Ashley.
With that being said- Go on everyone- sing Wicked for your college auditions! Yeah! Great!

wow. people who do that are usually little teenyboppers who nothing about musical theatre other than what is "popular" at the time. im not happy with those people. hahah
oh. and no one (maybe there a few exceptions) should ever attempt to sing songs from wicked because usually they can't do it. why ruin a good song? unless ur name is eden or shoshana, why try? ive never heard someone besides those two sing "defying gravity" or all the other belty songs well. please stop. save us from the screaming. and save your voice while your at. not everyone can belt that high(correctly)...if only people faced these facts.
(ps..sorry if this makes no sense it's 330am and im sleep deprived)

Well said everyone...ick it gets so boring to hear "popular", "gimmie, gimmie", and "for good" at every audition i go to...

i agree with cathyhyatt....it is SO irritating when people think that knowing "wicked" automatically means they're a huge broadway fan. if you hear "wicked" or "rent" or something and that kind of catapults you into listening to other, different bway stuff then that's great....but if you're only listening to one or two musicals and don't branch out?? then you're going to annoy me. sorry!!

I am a 32 year old performer. I went Equity when I was 19 and have done 3 national tours , jobs in Vegas, blah blah blah so I know a bit about the business.
I embarrassed (and learned a lot of stuff) myself many times along the way so I wanted to pass something along to you guys regarding this topic that no one ever told me when I was younger.
The Golden Rule is this: NEVER EVER EVER EVER sing anything that is currently on Broadway or even from a show that recently closed. Even if you sing the hell out of it, DON't do it.
That will immediately cause a strike against you and casting teams will think you are amateurish and unprofessional by not knowing this unspoken rule.
Try to look for abscure songs that know one knows. Casting teams love to hear rare songs. Any other than "Popular" that they have just heard 100 times in a row. Make it your own and then knock 'em dead.

I was a judge's assistant for a state wide theatre conference. 50% of the girls sang from MILLIE. Granted they were very good, the judges were very pissed off. Eyes rolled every time a Mille song came up.
Very rare that someone didn't choose a song that is rare. Like I always do. Cause they'll remember you. "Who was that guy who didn't sing a Les Mis song?"

EXACTLY!!!
Set yourself apart from the rest and sing something different than the masses..
Also, after a dance audition, even if you SUCKED, STAY PUT and let the judges judge you.
I have been involved behind the table many times and 85% of the time, the young will immediately run back into the crowd after having just danced. DON'T DO THAT!
If you do, at that point, your shot is OVER. We, as judges aren't going to find you in the crowd and pull you back out. Even if you were the best, someone better will come along that will follow unwritten rules that seperate you from the amateurs and pros.
Stand still stay in the formation you were placed, relax and smile. Also, say "Thank you" when told to clear the floor.
I recently student-directed a production of Singin' in the Rain... I can't count how many times we herd "Defying Gravity" from girls who, try as they could, simply cannot belt. Have you ever tried to cut someone off as they screech "SO IIIIIF YOOOOU CAAAARE TOOO FIIIIIND MEEEE..."?
Agh. I don't think my ears have ever been the same since.

I have been at auditions where they have posted songs that they refuse to hear.
I was at a tour audition a year or two ago and there were, at the start, 6 men who all planned on singing "close every door" from Joseph. As if the directors hadn't heard that ten million times before.

Close EVery Door?
EWWWWW...what a TERRIBLE choice..
That must have been a Non-Eq call because no seasoned performer worth his salt would EVER audition with that!
ewwwww..
(I did the tour of Joseph so I do love the song but it is WAAAY overdone and should NEVER EVER be song at an audition)
yeah it made me glad i sang "what more can i say?" from falsettoland.
yeah... whenever i hear a girl sing wicked, i want to die.
...not really

really? millie is overdone?
i have been to a bunch of auditions and never heard millie. i know wicked is WAY overdone. especially with young teens, and their stage moms who think they will just sound so adorable on "popular"
oh god.
