Oh dear. That sounds serious.
I agree. I haven't heard a good defying gravity thats not a cast recording. I admit that I've used "The Wizard and I", however I live in Australia wehere Wicked doesn't exist yet, so no one is sick of it. I win! Yaaaaaay! (Muppet dance)

Posted: 8/24/05 at 2:55amI've talked to plenty of directors and even college professors that would love to hear the "youth" sing classic musicals. Not only are classics perfect for auditions but it shows' that the person is also knows their history on musicals and is more flexible.. So I've heard.

It all depends on what you are auditioning for IMH.
If you're auditioning for something highly professional then definately don't sing anything that was on broadway in about the past 5 years(again, there are exceptions...)
If it's for college... depending on their rules I suppose. Every college is different.
You should sing something that suits you and YOUR character the best for college. They want to see you, not an Idina or Sherie copy cat.
Go to musicalheaven.com and blindly pick a show you don't know and learn about it. You may like it even if it is from 1939!

these girls in my school painted themselves green and sang defying gravity together in the middle of the crowded halls!!
not only did they cause more traffic, but they were sooooo annoying!! random people walking by would just yell "SHUT UP" or "YOU SUCK" i didnt yell anything, but it definately agreed with the people that did!
this doesnt actually have anything to do with auditions, but it kinda goes with the wicked thing being over done, way over done!

Posted: 8/27/05 at 11:28pmHey Guys - Wow, I can't remember the last time I posted on Broadway World - but I was reading this post; and I know it says "Girls stop singing Wicked" But what about guys - I'm going to the cattle call in Boston next week - I can't think of anything to sing - I am a versatile singer - but Dancing through Life really showcases my ability - What should I do - I know that this could be my big break, but I'm just so nervous as to what approach I should take. Help Someone - please!

Posted: 8/30/05 at 3:22pmI don't really like singing Wicked at school anymore. It got annoying after we sang Popular at a school concert.

I was in a acting troup production of YAGMCB. We as a cast were auditioning for a second roation cast. So we could work on school house rock for childrens hospital.
I was one of the head casting directors for second cast. A good amount of people tried out, most of them were clueless about auditiong for a musical. I had one person sing breaking the habit from Licoln Park which he couldn't sing, another girl sing a country song, and one girl sang the ENTIRE DEFYING GRAVITY. If that isn't bad enough, she 1. couldn't sing a lick and 2. Sang it completly in her head voice, which was weak off key and horrible. I had felt so bad. I think someone had told her not to sing it, yet she did. There were parts in the song where I actually had to grab my best friends leg so I wouldn't laugh out loud.

If you sing the song very well, there is NO reason that you cannot sing these songs. And that comes from the director's side of the table.
What kind of community theater were these auditions at?

Posted: 9/5/05 at 12:24amI agree. If you sing overdone songs chances are you will not get the part your looking for, unless you do them amazingly well or something. Look for something that isnt done alot, but yet a good song that will captivate the people watching you. L

The sterotypical rule with overdone songs is that you have to sing it at least as good as the orginal or better. If you can not sing defying gravity better than Idina, stephanie, shoshana, or Ana , then don't bother. Same goes for Millie if you and everybody else knows you're a better singer than sutton than maybe you could pull it off.
Usually even if you are better, the director might not see past the song to actually realize that you are more talented that Sutton or Idina. So ususally, that's not going to happen.
plus, you want to stand out of the audition crowd. So why sing something really diffrent.

Posted: 9/6/05 at 10:12pmI'm just sick of trying to hear 12 year old girls belt out "So if you caaaaaaaaaaaaare to fiiiiiiiiiiiiind meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" and then the other girls try to sound like Kristin Chenoweth in "Popular". But amazingly, there are people who are not aware of this phenomenon. This girl on my bus was telling me about how her family was going to see "Wicked" over the weekend so I asked her if she had heard the music. She gives me a blank look and says "Wicked's a musical?"

Posted: 9/6/05 at 10:42pmI actually experienced this for the first time today. I mean..it wasn't BAD. There was just this girl..and this..boy (girl my age, boy freshman..) and they were singing the last few bars of Defying Gravity. I mean..it wasn't bad, but it was just pretentious. And it made me feel good that I was listening to Perpetual Anticipation rather than sing along with them.

I SERIOUSLY doubt there is a 12-17 year old girl that can sing better than Idina.
If there is she needs to be my new voice teacher.

Posted: 9/29/05 at 7:01pmI live in hick town so we're not really exposed to Broadway musicals as much things overdone here are 'Sound of Music', 'Annie', Annie Get Your Gun(Guys), and "Kiss Me Kate" and 'Chicago' (I don't have much room for insults through I was by luck the only one to do 'New York, New York')

Posted: 10/1/05 at 7:56pmLast year at Thespian convetion in texas i was watching duet musical...at convention you cant use props or costumes or sets to compete during duet musical (or anything else). Well these two lik 14 year olds decide they will sing defying gravity and instead of making it there own they did a carbon copy. The funniest part was the girl sing elphaba actually stood on a chair to reinact the scene....they didnt know how stupid they looked!

Im 13. I love Wicked. But I love shows like Avenue Q more. I never sang a Wicked song for an audition, except For Good which I sang so that I could do a solo for one of my best friends who moved.
For auditions I have sung songs from A Chorus Line, Cats, and Jekyll and Hyde. Wicked auditions hurt my ears. But, I still do fully plan on painting my face green when I see it again in December.
Someone posted a while back about people singing along to lyrics and that totally pisses me off. Just because you know all the words doesn't mean you can sing a long, especially when someone payed $80 to hear Shoshana Bean sing, not you.

Bleh what people don't always get is that you can't just sing what's popular. You have to sing something that sort of... I dunno how to word it exactly...tailors to the show.
I will admit I sang "The Wizard and I" when auditioning for "Jekyll & Hyde" at my college, but only because my buddy Greg was the casting director and he said to sing something from Wicked (I had asked for ideas prior to auditioning)

I love the people in choir that think they know everything Broadway because they have heard of Wicked.
And I love the girls who always tell me they know more about Broadway than I do... then when I ask them about ANY show on Broadway right now, they don't know anything.
