1. There are NO FOLDERS. You have to apply a "label" to every email you receive. If you want to bring up all Emails with the same label, Gmail "finds" them for you.
2. All Emails are listed as THREADED--NO WAY to turn option off.
3. Gmail has KNOWN ISSUES with Mozilla Firefox (which is the Internet Browser I use.)
4. You do get 1 gig (100,000 mgs) of storage space on the server--which will come in real handy for those of us who plan to live to be 125.
5. Gmail markets that it "flawlessly imports" Address Books from all other Email programs. It wouldn't import mine from Mozilla Thunderbird.
Once again, all the hype, but NOTHING behind it! :)

Well, I haven't been using my G-Mail address that much (I already have 8 other addresses for various purposes), but I have to object to your storage complaint. Some people (myself included) really can use all that storage space. Not only do I use it for archiving, I use it to send and store large attachments both at school and at work, where I make computer graphic files that are often quite large.
And geez, it's a beta version. Give them a few months.

MAry_Ether why on Earth are you so obsessed with which email provider we use?
I know it's beta, but I don't like the direction they're going in. (No folders, etc.)
Mozilla products are ALSO in beta (with known bugs), but they suit me just fine.
Just one example:
In Mozilla Thunderbird, you can turn threading ON or OFF. In Gmail, you're chained to it like the Count of Monte Cristo in prison!
Re: Server Space. You're right, maybe I was a bit harsh. Personally, I think it's just another marketing ploy to get users to get product.
BTW, have you ever thought what would happen if the server crashes? Do you really think Google is going to spend a lot of money and effort to retrieve your data from a "free" account?
I'll take good old-fashioned "POP" mail over Webmail every time. The mail sits on YOUR PC. YOU MANAGE IT. You can move it around and even back it up if you wan't to.
You CAN'T backup webmail! :)

I always back up any vital files, whether they're in my hard drive or in an email server. I'm just a bit of a pack rat, so I like to archive old e-mails. And with 9 addresses, things start to add up.
Being able to send and temporarily store large attachments is a godsend, though. Seriously. Google even forced Hotmail and other e-mail providers to raise how much space they give.
In some of my older addresses (the ones that spambots discovered), I get many junk mails every day. I used to have to check those addresses constantly to keep my inbox from overflowing, but now I can leave it for a couple of days without worrying. I don't know how you use your e-mail, but that's an importnat thing for me.
but, Mary_Ethel, you recommended GMail in your "HOTMAIL SUCKS" thread... what are we to do???
WOW. What set you off, Mary-E?
I've been using Gmail for several months now and LOVE it. I belong to a group email list, and it has be terrific for keeping track of discussions. Love the threads. And I've found that it has been pretty reliable...especially since it's still in beta testing.
I can understand preferring to have your email managed by a program that stores it on your computer, but really, that's a personal choice. Gmail suits me just fine for the purposes for which I use it. I'm a little unclear what your issues are...if the threads are not to your liking, there are plenty of other programs out there that use folders. Personally, I like the thread innovation, and am happy to have the option to choose to use Gmail. Your condemnation seems pretty harsh when what it comes down to is that you prefer the old way of managing mail.
Great, Mary_Ethel. Now I am totally f***ing tortured.
In my own defense:
"Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."--Ralph Waldo Emeson. :)
Several of my buddies had referred GMAIL to me in GLOAWING terms. When I actually saw it for myself, I was QUITE disappointed. (Probably I relied too much on the hype of my friends.) I thought it would be something new and exciting and found it to be neither.
Due to several bad experiences with Webmail, I exclusively use POP mail and am suspicious of any Webmail program.
But you folks are all right. To each his own. If you like Gmail, please enjoy it in good health.
Why am I "obsessed" with Email? Because I am trying to start my own business, and therefore spend 90% of my day in Email.
OK, enough's enough. COPYCATS, anyone?
