I swear to bethnor, I hit the button once. Then I got a very weird error message in giant blue type on a white background--a first for me.

I've lost track of how often it posted, but apologies!

"Tell that to the internet. If you Google "peyos", it tries to correct you, and shows results for "payos" instead of "peyos". The first website listed for both "peyos" and "payos" is the Wikipedia entry for "payot". In fact, there are 8 different spelling variations on that entry alone. Let's not split hairs (no pun intended)."

I googled and found it to be peyos. Spelling notwithstanding, my post was mainly a response to your description of a particular sect of Jews.

Gay Jews

bethnor, read the following book if you want to understand the point AC is making. The point is that many theologians believe the book has been gravely mistranslated from the original language as well as tainted and very much taken out of context. Therefore, no, one can not say, "leviticus either says homosexuality is an abomination or it doesn't. if it does say this, it is either true, or it isn't. it quite clearly DOES say that" or similar such comments because what the printed edition people read now says and what the original scrolls said are not the same thing.

My point in this discussion overall is that if you ARE going to believe in the Bible, at least know the truth behind what you are reading. And like too many things, too much of our society is majorly ignorant, yet acts with certainty.

Wow! I go out to dinner and this thread explodes. Reg, as usual, is the calm voice of reason pointing out the blatant misstatements that "bethnor" has made throughout this thread. I'm genuinely amused that this poster uses the same argumentative tactics that he/she would seemingly decry without the slightest bit of irony.

if they are true, in what sense were my questions rhetorical? well-rehearsed?

How about this: a cursory search of your posts show that you've posted the same specious, fallacious "facts" about religion and religious people on AT LEAST three other threads. You claimed in a thread that "religion claims lives" and that enlightened people cannot be religious. You post the same things almost word for word. You obviously are not looking to have a discussion; you want to pass along your interpretation of religion as gospel truth, distorting facts as you wish in order to make yourself seem more credible. My guess is that you've had a bad religious experience at some point in your life and you cannot come to terms with the fact that religion and religious people are not all automatons blindly following a book.

Jerby--excellent post and suggestion. Bethnor of course won't read it.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

The word is actually "payis"--Hebrew for "corners," the plural version of the word "pe'ah" (corner).

The letter at the end of the word that signifies the plural is pronounced as a "t" by Sephardic Jews from the Mediterranean and as an "s" by Ashkenazic Jews from Northern Europe.

Similarly, with the word "mitzvah" that I used in my earlier post in this thread, Ashkenazic Jews pronounce the plural "mitzvahs" while Sephardic Jews pronounce the plural "mitzvot."

Leviticus 19:27 states: "You shall not round off the corners (peya) of your head." Somehow, this became "You shall grow long curly sideburns that will make you look like an extra from Barbra Streisand's Yentl."

Barbra (May Her Name Be for a Blessing!) chose to eschew payis when she played Yentl, although when Tovah Feldshuh played Yentl previously, she wore excellent payis!

But listen to me, Bethnor, my Grandma Anna, who was an observant Jew when she felt like it--meaning she kept Kosher in her home, but at Hom & Hom Chinese Restaurant on Fordham Road Sunday nights, she enjoyed the Lobster Cantonese, thank you very much, and the Roast Pork Fried Rice--here's what Grandma Anna would say to you:

"Enough already, with your farbissineh kvetching! Stop hokking us a chainik! It's nothing but narishkeit you're spouting--a khaloshes!--and the more you go on insisting you're right, the more everyone agrees that you're wrong. So stop already with the mishehgass before I give you a frosk in the pisk. Come sit, have a glass tea and some halavah. You would be a nice girl, Beth-ela, if you could learn to keep your piskela shut."

It's 'peyos'.

Trust me, I've done intensive research for hair to do FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.

'Payis' is the American way of spelling it.

take note, i did not say that religious people told him that, i am saying that is what his RELIGION ITSELF taught him.

If that were true, then everyone would believe their religion in exactly the same way, which doesn't happen because books are inanimate objects that cannot teach themselves nor influence others without human interaction. We are not living in ancient Mayan times where we exist in a self-contained community with the sole knowledge of one religion interpreted one way. We have an enormous amount of freedom and choice when it comes to religion, its interpretation, and the degree to which we'll follow. I get where you're coming from, which is not unlike the anti-gun movement. I'd like to get rid of guns, too. But I also see the truth in the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" meme. The problem is, your argument is far too broad. Instead of anti-gun, you are anti-weapon and that simply isn't possible. In this day and age, in this country, blaming "religion itself" makes no sense.

Okay, so I'm curious...

"Leviticus 19:27 states: "You shall not round off the corners (peya) of your head." Somehow, this became "You shall grow long curly sideburns that will make you look like an extra from Barbra Streisand's Yentl."

So what do non-Hassidic scholars think that passage meant?

Well, now we finally know who's been sleeping with Pat Robertson. I knew there had to be a gay scandal in there somewhere. I just didn't know it was the key to Judeo-Christian unification.

By the way, that so-called rabbi is wrong: The Talmud says NOTHING about "shaking your member."

These people are obsessed by penises.

I know, right? The Talmud specifically mentions "choking the chicken", but it was in reference to preparing a meal before the Sabbath. You can only blame the religion, not the interpretation, however. Just look at how much poultry had to die in the name of religion.

I really didn't read that many posts. But I agree with those that said Yiddish is just very common in New York, a rather Jewish city.

As for the rest, I'm not gay, but I am Jewish (a Long Island Jew, to be exact Gay Jews ). I'm reformed and homosexuality is not frowned upon or really ever mentioned. It's not an issue in my temple (as in, no one really cares about the orientation of members).

Most of my family is conservative and modern orthodox, they also have no problem with gay people.

The more I think about it, a lot of Jewish mothers love gay boy chicks. Look at Joan Rivers.

No but seriously, most of the Jewish people I know don't care whether someone is straight or gay.

I use 'OY' all of the time, but I'm not even close to being Jewish.

Only by insertion...

The only part of me that could be mistaken for Jewish would be readily noticeable if you were cruising the urinals or public showers.

Though oddly enough, a few weeks ago in Austin, a VERY drunk 20-something was hitting on me in a bar and kept saying how he was turned on by hot Jew boys. It was awkward to say the least.

An interview with a highly respected, well-known (at least in the UK) and eminently sensible Rabbi who is gay.

Gay Rabbis don't count unless they're young and hot. Everyone knows that!
