Gingrich wins BIG in SC

Posted: 1/21/12 at 9:28pmWith 80% of the votes counted, Gingrich leads Romney by well over 10%. Needless to say, the folks at MSNBC and HuffPo are beside themselves with giddiness. Make no mistake, Romney is still better situated to win the nomination in the long run; he's far better organized and funded. But Gingrich is bound to drag Romney into the gutter, and that will do nothing but alienate independents.

Posted: 1/21/12 at 9:37pmI heard them talking earlier how low the turn out was. SO the big question is, how long before Newt screws it up? (and who wants to bet he'll blame the media when that happens?) His arrogance will get the better of him and he will do something to make Romney the nominee.

Posted: 1/21/12 at 9:43pmI tend to agree, but Gingrich will continue to draw ovations from debate audiences with his hate speech, and I'm hoping Romney gets drawn in.

Sounds like Newt wants Santorum on the ticket with him.
And that's terrifying.

Posted: 1/21/12 at 9:45pmSantorum would have nothing to lose, so he may be just crazy enough to go for it. Most others would recognize it as too toxic.

Posted: 1/21/12 at 10:03pmA Gingrich/Santorum ticket may result in the highest Democrat voter turnout for a Presidential election in the history of the US. But perhaps Republicans secretly want Obama to win this time by even more than 365 electoral votes.

All this the week that we find out about Newt wanting an open marriage. I just keep thinking of this exchange from the movie "Clue":
MISS SCARLET: I hardly think it will enhance your reputation at the U.N. Professor Plum, if it's revealed that you have been implicated not only in adultery with one of your patients, but in her death and the deaths of five other people.
PROFESSOR PLUM: You don't know what kind of people they have at the U.N.; I might go up in their estimation.

God, Newt is despicable. The man is too egotistical and volatile to attain the nomination. He bobs up and down in this process like the world's grimiest buoy.
I'm pulling for a Romney nomination... he's the least-worst option, I suppose.

Just marry me now.

Posted: 1/21/12 at 11:57pmAnother remote possibility is a brokered convention, which hasn't happened in decades. Can't imagine that would go over well with either the GOP faithful or independents, because it negates the primary process.

Posted: 1/22/12 at 12:41amI don't think it's that remote, I'm sort of looking forward to it happening and opening up a huge hypocrisy in the GOP relating to the Bush minority Presidential election of 2004.

Like what happened on The West Wing! That episode also featured a nomination from the floor. Maybe Aunt Sarah or Jeb can stroll in to the convention and be the "savior" of the party.

This was always going to be his strong state, wasn't it? He had a strong organization in SC.
What I'm curious about is how many votes went to Cain. :P

It's still early. Who knows what tomorrow will hold for this cluster**** of a nomination process. I mean, honestly. Not since Wacky Races has such a motley and ridiculous cast of characters competed for something.

Posted: 1/22/12 at 7:22amCain received over 6,300 votes, or about 1.1%. Not a lot, but more than recent dropouts Huntsman, Perry and Bachmann combined.

I cannot wait for the next new SNL for their take on it.
Those Gingrich voters had to be smoking some heavy duty **** to cast a vote for this guy.
As bad as Obama has been (IMO) he will wipe the floor with old Newt should he be the nominee.

Posted: 1/22/12 at 12:35pmThe scary thing I saw on Facebook yesterday that someone I know commented on is that some people want Santorum or Gingrich based on them being Catholic or pro-life. Apparently that's all that matters.

Posted: 1/22/12 at 12:40pmThere are people on both sides of the aisle who are one issue voters. Some will not even consider voting for the other party no matter what the qualifications are. Some would vote for Daffy Duck rather than vote for another party. It is what it is.

I hate putting this out there but SC was a referendum on Romney's religious affiliation, which Gingrich was arguably well aware of going into the talent portion of the pageant. Gingrich is too shrewd to go there in public though. The King of Bain play was gravy.
What Romney and Gingrich find in each other is a formidable opponent willing to do anything to seal the party nomination. And both need Santorum on the general election ticket to appease the party's social conservatives.
The libertarian-leaning wing of the GOP and the Tea Party offshoot ain't got a dog in the race at this point.
I'll most likely support Obama/Biden again but would like nothing more than to see the indies and disaffected members of the two major parties join me in the Libertarian Party. Perhaps I'm naive but I sense that the Congress is ripe for the ascent of a legitimate 3rd party.
This binary cluster*** of the Republic has become far too toxic to handle. I've grown weary of having to hold my nose going into my polling place.
My dream ticket at this point is H.R. Clinton/Romney.

Do we really want a president who looks like he takes 6-8 "difficult BMs" a week?
Of course not.
Thank you, South Carolina.

Javero, I understand your point completely, but unfortunately we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place. Until and unless a 3rd party of equal weight to the Republicans and democrats is established, a 3rd party candidate tends to only siphon votes, often times just enough to shift the weigh to affect which of the 2 big parties winds the race. To REALLY start that process, you have to be willing to go through several cycles where there will be major political chaos... Siphoning votes from Independents to a 3rd party candidate that could attract moderates from the Democratic ticket ONLY, now, serves to boost the Republican party. Are we willing to do that and let them win? That is the REAL question we have to face right now.
What we TRULY need is a Republican ticket SO unappealing to either the fiscal conservatives, the social conservatives or the tea Party off-shoots that one of them is spurred to nominate a candidate of THEIR ideology to a 3rd Party ticket that would, essentially, fracture the Republican party in half.
Yes, I freely admit that it would be a REAL gift to the democrats in this election cycle, but realistically speaking, the only way the Republican party will ever find a way to regain credibility and survive into the future is to divide itself from the fundamental crazies that have overtaken the party in the last 30 years. I DO think that people such as Meghan McCain, who I do not ALWAYS agree with but always respect hold the key to bringing respect back to that Party.
