Girl Scout Cookies and the Jerks that feel the need to criticize

Posted: 3/27/06 at 11:10amShh, Craig, not so loud! My mind is conditioned to expect those things once a year, and that's it. I'm not one to gorge on sweets or anything, really, but for some reason, I can eat a whole column of those cookies in one sitting.

heehee I also hate that they only sell them a small part of the year. Why i always buy like 10 boxese to last me a while!
And $3 is really really cheap. I mean you get quite a few cookies that are much much better than others!
And Grasshoppers may be technically the same thing, but they really cannot match up to Thin Mints.

I watched it and I didn't think he attacked anything.
Some people need to lighten up. Damn.

GS Cookies make the adults in my "buttoned down" office giddy. a child of one of our bosses sells them and boxes appear in our cafe at intervals. the IT guy has 7 boxes in his desk. everyone is uplifted by these "special" cookies.

I'm loving this years new cookie. I don't know if they're called the same thing everywhere but here they're called Cafe Cookies and they taste like gingerbread men!!!
I didn't realize the cookies were called different names in different places until I went to college in a different state from where I grew up.

Posted: 3/27/06 at 1:07pmSo I just watched the story online. I realize he was being serious but I feel like it was a joke no one let him in on. I mean the whole time I was waiting for the canned laughter in the background. It was too bad about him going after the girl scouts....but can people watch that and take it seriously?

Margo's got it right, he's a warped frustrated old man. I used to enjoy him in small doses but after his infamouse "Gay" comment I pretty much took a bathroom break when his "Commnetaries" came on.
Oh yeah, he said "Gay people are like smokers. I don't question their right to exist, but I sure wouldn't want to share an elevator with one."
So funny.

Joe, are you sure he said that? Was it one of his commentaries? If you saw it and remember it, I won't question it, but there's a lot of statements passed around and attributed to Andy Rooney that he never said (Snopes debunks a bunch of him). He and George Carlin probably have more things attributed to them that they never said than what they actually have said. Like I said before, I'd always regarded him as somewhat liberal. Didn't he tick off the religious right recently by calling them nuts?
eta: Here's what I was remembering. He called Mel Gibson and Pat Robertson "wackoes."

I thought what he actually said was something along the lines of AIDS being a disease contracted due to behavior, much like emphysema and smoking.

Posted: 3/27/06 at 4:12pmYup, Kringas, I found it after you posted that. It was 16 or 17 years ago. He put "homosexual unions" up with smoking, etc. on ways to cut down a lifespan, and then defended that stance in a letter to The Advocate but apologized for his wording.

This is through an old William F. Buckley column, so grain of salt not included.
His statement on air:
There was some recognition in 1989 of the fact that many of the ills which kill us are self-induced: too much alcohol, too much food, drugs, homosexual unions, cigarettes. They're all known to lead quite often to premature death.
And his response in The Advocate:
I find the popular argument that it is the AIDS virus, not homosexuality, that kills, to be spurious. It's the same argument the gun-control lobby uses when it says it is criminals, not guns, that kill. The intelligent gay community has drastically reduced the incidence of HIV with what it calls 'safe sex.' . . . I have a friend who, for many years, was one of the principal apologists for the tobacco industry. His logic was much the same too. He argued that it was lung cancer, not tobacco, that kills. It annoyed my friend that anyone would infer a direct connection between smoking and lung cancer, just as it annoys homosexuals to have people like myself deduce that homosexuality often leads to death by AIDS. (snip) I'm genuinely sorry that homosexuals found the broadcast offensive, because it was not my intention to offend them. It was not my intention to make their already difficult gay life any more difficult. I'll be more careful.

I find his comment about my already difficult gay life hurtful.

Ha! I was just about to comment that the use of the words "difficult gay life" amused me to no end.
Thanks, Calvin.

I've been waiting for someone to bring up the point I always think is ironic.....In my area Girl Scout cookies always go on sale and are delivered during Lent...just when so many people are trying to give up sweets.
Girl Scouts...the latest agents of Satan...LOL
(Personally, I think the Girl Scouts are great, and have purchased more than my fair share of cookies this year!)
