So by extension, bigger than Jesus?
The "Glee" cast has surpassed the Beatles for the most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by a non-solo act.
The cast of the Fox television musical series about a high school glee club has six debuts on the chart this week. That gives it a total of 75 songs on the chart to the Beatles' 71.
The show's soundtrack got a boost after this week's episode featuring the music of Britney Spears.
Elvis Presley still leads overall with 108 songs to chart on the Hot 100. He's followed by James Brown with 91, then "Glee."
Watch out Elvis!

Posted: 10/7/10 at 11:49amThis is ridiculous. It makes some sense, given the sheer volume of material they release so rapidly, but it still makes me sad.

There seems to be a cd release on a weekly basis.

I will admit to having a fairly embarrassing amount of Glee music on my ipod.

Posted: 10/7/10 at 11:55amDidn't the Beatles write a couple of their songs? And actually sing them, you know, themselves, without the use of that tuning software?

Posted: 10/7/10 at 11:58amThe DJ's on the station I was listening to on the way home yesterday refused to accept this, since The Beatles wrote their own songs, and didn't have to churn out 4 or 5 of them on a weekly basis.

Welcome to the digital age...we grew up in a time where actual physical sales of 45's, cassingles, CD singles and actual radio airplay mattered.
Saddest thing is is that the vast majority of the "Glee" songs are on and off the charts within a few weeks...unlike Elvis, the Beatles and so on.

The really scary thing is by how MUCH Glee will end up beating the others. When all is said and done, they're going to end up with a virtually unbeatable record.
In a way, it's completely understandable though -- just like TV ratings should change with new technology but hasn't completely, music ratings and sales haven't kept up. How can you compare having to actually go to the store to buy a single to clicking a button at home? They're two completely different animals.

Posted: 10/7/10 at 12:22pmElvis didn't write his own songs. Neither did Frank Sinatra or Aretha Franklin. Wipe them off the charts, please!
#12Glee-- Bigger than the Beatles
Posted: 10/7/10 at 12:23pmThere is no way that there's 101 Glee songs on my iTunes. No way at all. Nope.

Posted: 10/7/10 at 12:25pmHow nice it must be to reach such a level of success for doing the smallest amount of work. Hell, most of the songs' arrangements aren't even vastly different from the originals.

Posted: 10/7/10 at 12:46pmIf (and that is a HUGE IF) we are still talking about Glee 50 years from now Then and only then will they ever be "bigger" than the Beatles.

Posted: 10/7/10 at 1:36pmThis is like Glee being considered a "comedy" at the Emmys
#16Glee-- Bigger than the Beatles
Posted: 10/7/10 at 1:40pmWell I probably have mostly all of them from Season 1 downloaded (not in any rush to get Season 2 yet) but I would still not count them in the same ranks as any of those artists.

Back in the 1980's, a Chicago "Top 40" radio station had a phone-in poll to determine "the greatest rock band ever". The Beatles came in second. The winner was Duran Duran.
Let's see how popular "Glee" is in 25 years.

You all do realize that when the Beatles debuted they were universally reviled, written off as talentless and condemned as harmful to the youth of America?
Two years into the Beatles run, NO ONE would have guessed that they'd be cultural icons in a decade.

#24Glee-- Bigger than the Beatles
Posted: 10/7/10 at 5:10pmI not a fan of The Beatles (just ask anyone in my Beatle-obsessed family), but I can assure you I've heard every one of their records. I haven't heard a single Glee recording. Not one. Also, songs on charts doesn't equal sales. There's simply no possibly way that Glee has outsold The Beatles. Nor will anyone still be buying these recordings in 5 years, let alone 50! I mean is anyone actually still buying Glee's initial release?
