I wish there was a way to impart to the world that life is just so much better when you don't believe in any of it.

*sigh*
Some of my step-father's family lives in Murfreesboro, so that doesn't surprise me at all.
And is part of the reason I'm completely estranged from them and live on the other side of the country.
I say good fer whoever wrote that on that there sign. This is AMERICA. Not IRANICA.
NOOT WELCOME?

Right? Total missed opportunity. My OTHER recurring nightmare (see bryan's gay dateing thread for the other other one) is that this country is gonna swing crazy Right in November. Maybe I just need a xanax.

Phyllis, I find I feel better if I just pretend these really awful news stories are really from The Onion.
According to Mapquest, it is 885 miles (14.5 hours) from NYC to Murfreesboro. Clearly, this mosque is too close to ground zero.
The country will not swing right in November. What will probably happen is that for the first time in 10 years we will end up with neither party ruling congress.
Which is a very good thing. Checks and balances will be back.
It seems that whenever one side has a significant majority, the opposite side's activism naturally increases. When the GOP ruled during the Bush era there was a lot more grass roots activism from the left.
Now that the Dems have a majority the right feels like they have no voice in policy and so these hate groups pop up.
But what has always fueled activists on both sides of the spectrum is a feeling of powerlessness and a sense of injustice as a result(however illegitimate it may be).
I'm not saying they'll go away, b/c obviously they won't. But it's hard to really energize people using a specter of oppression when there is clearly a more even balance of power.
My guess: the nuts will still be loud, but their numbers will dwindle to just the extremists. Yes, there are a lot of extremists but not nearly as many as we're seeing now at Tea Party rallies etc.

It went a little beyond sign vandalism:
"MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A suspicious fire that damaged construction equipment at the site of a future mosque in Tennessee has some local Muslims worried that their project has been dragged into the national debate surrounding Manhattan's ground zero.
Authorities told leaders of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro that four pieces of heavy construction equipment on the site were doused with an accelerant and one set ablaze early Saturday morning. The site is now being patrolled at all hours by the sheriff's department."

For some people, a mosque anywhere in America is too close to Ground Zero.

Quite a few of those interviewed at Beck's rally made statements along the lines of, "How many do they need?" - which really made me laugh, coming from citizens of a country with Christian churches of many denominations spread liberally throughout the land.
I saw that video, Q, with that giant mass of diabetes and corn chips sprawled out in a lawn chair, unable or unwilling to even sit up for the interview.

Calvin - it was almost impossible for me not to think of WALL*E.
My dear friend's husband sent a donation to the center with a note that read, "Not all Tennesseans are like that." I adore him.
