Some of my favorites are still those I read as a kid. The original DRACULA. Sure we all saw the movie. But the book, to me, was riveting. And AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS is an all time favorite. Also I enjoy the Dorothy L. Sayer Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. My all time favorite is King's SALEM'S LOT. He is SO underestimated as a master storyteller.
Last week finished John Saul's THE MANHATTEN HUNT CLUB. Creepy. It will change how you view the subway system.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

I'm currently reading UNCLE MAMA, the biography of Edward Everett Tanner III (aka Patrick Dennis). Fascinating read.
I always recommend the TALES OF THE CITY series.

If you're looking for a good thriller, check out THE SECRET HISTORY by Donna Tartt and NO NIGHT IS TOO LONG by Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine....and then just try to put them down.
I also read and love an offbeat historical romance called THE PASSION by Jeanette Winterson...LOVED IT!!!!!!
Also re-reading a children's book from my wee childhood called THE SILVER CROWN by Robert C. O'Brien. Still good...surprisingly wierd and almost Jungian in it's dreaminess. Read it!

Posted: 4/14/04 at 2:34pmI'm currently finishing She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb. I've been enjoying it quite a bit. One of my favorites is Entries From a Hot Pink Notebook by Todd D. Brown. I've read it twice and will probably read it again soon. For some fun, humorous and light reading, I highly recommend one of the two collections of novels by Daniel Pinkwater. Both are wonderful. They are stories for Jr. High kids, but are still just as entertaining for adults. Try Alan Mendleson, the Boy From Mars or The Snarkout Boys and the Avacado of Death.

Posted: 4/14/04 at 5:58pmI just finished Secret Life Of Bees which was a great book, worth reading. Da Vinci Code is also good, I couldn't put it down! Angels and Demons is good, but extremely similar to Da Vinci Code (scientist Robert Langdon discovers influential old man has been killed, teams up with man's beautiful smart daughter to solve mystery using art history and symbols...)

DA VINCI CODE was the best book I've ever read. ANGELS AND DEMONS was also fantastic- the second best book I've ever read. For all you lovers of those two books, go to danbrown.com, go to where it says "secrets" then take the challenge- it's tons of fun! Also, DIGITAL FORTRESS was really good- it's also by Dan Brown.
THE LAST JUROR by John Grisham was really good. Actually, anything by Grisham is really good. THE LAST JUROR was probably one of my favorites though.

When I first saw this topic, I immediately planned to recommend Wicked. But, seeing as you've already read that.... I'm reading The Da Vinci Code now, and I love it. I also just finished reading Angels in America... also amazing.
*thinks*
Anything else I've read in the recent past has been for school (i.e. The Picture of Dorian Gray, - which I LOVED - Sula, Invisible Man) so they're aren't really things I'd recommend reading for leisure.

One of my co-workers told me last week he attended Citadel for two terms. So now I'm rereading Pat Conroy novels.
A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY is among my favorites, right up there with To KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
I'm also buying and borrowing London tour guide books. I'm traveling there this fall.

Yes, but are any of them a musical? No knee-jerk reactions, please--think about it a second. Would it make a GOOD musical?

I have to agree with a couple other people on the board...
"A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving is my all time favorite book. Beautifully written and heartwrenching as well. Spiritually uplifting. A wonderful read. I also enjoyed The DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons, but they are a different kind of read. Reads kind of like an action movie, fast and episodic. I really enjoyed "Middlesex" too (which I think would make a very um... interesting... musical!)
