"This sense of entitlement about giving birth. And "being a parent." "
Auggie, this has nothing to do with the actual of parenting, sadly. It has more to do with some romantic vision this disturbed woman has of her entire identity wrapped up in motherhood. Parenting is about sacrifice, dedication and taking responsibility--for years and years and years--for the life you choose to create. Seeing the little ones with all of the tubes and machines was very sad. It's not at all their fault.
The interview was bizarre. She's just so out of touch. How could this fertility doctor think she was of sound mind? I mean, her monetary situation aside, she has a history of depression and suicidal thoughts. My co-worker said he fears an Andrea Yates situation.

My fear is actually my wish -- that one day, she'll simply give them up. Or have to. A story that could've begun with adoption -- she could've adopted as a single woman, our foster care system is stuffed to the gills -- could end with adoption. She could've taken in an older child, smothered him or her with love, and used her own dysfunctional concept of satisfying her needs to save a life. She might've even afforded it (and many states help those who adopt foster kids).
I know, I know, she's too far gone to be wished on anyone. But a foster child who's been through foster drift -- moved from place to place with belongings in shopping bags -- might have found a modicum of sernity and stability with her.
Instead, she has unleased a scenario out of Mary Shelley on us all, becoming a nighmarish caricature of the American "infertility community."

Posted: 2/11/09 at 5:40pmI wonder if they'd be adoptable with all those health problems. I mean, I get that people will happily pay tens of thousands of dollars to actually birth them with the health problems, of course, though.

I hope somebody somewhere has told you you have what they call a way with words.

Her idea that she can take care of all of these infants and toddlers by herself (with mom and dad helping, whether they want to, or not) just boggles my mind. And I'm not even think of the cost of raising them. Just having one child can be exhausting, even in a two parent household. Just physically feeding them and changing diapers is almost unimaginable.
The extraordinary self-indulgence of this irresponsible act just makes me crazy.
I would imagine it won't take that long for DYFS (or the California version...) to rescue some of the babes, but still. And really, in this economy, I don't think the donations are going to be rolling in. I can't even imagine which demographic is going to find her anything other that a schemingly selfish gold-digging wacko.
The lips just seal the deal.
