Posted: 2/9/09 at 5:24pmIf we don't know that the overarching theme of the reality TV era is "Mental Illness on Parade," then we've learned nothing. I really don't see how this story ends in anything other than the Anna Nicole template.

We the taxpayers are or we the medical insurance buyers are. The hospital will find a way to get paid one way or another.
I would not be surprised if the Fertility Doctor has his license revoked after this. The woman is obviously mentally ill.

But this a culture that gives a reality show to that "stable" couple who keep popping out a kid annually and they change the show's title to up the kid count the way McDonalds used to do with their burgers served sign. We cannot be surprised that somebody with mental illness doesn't pick up on this stuff in our culture.
If the grandmother hadn't squawked, TLC would have had the mom signed up for a show of her own.

Posted: 2/9/09 at 5:55pmBut shouldn't the doctor be the Fail Safe in a situation like this? Is it Ethical to impregnate a mentally unstable woman with seven viable embryos? Specially knowing she more then likely will be unable financially or physically be able to handle it?

Posted: 2/9/09 at 6:03pmSeeing older pictures of Octomom one can clearly see that she has had some work done to her face and especially her lips. Personally- I HATE the way she talks and how she says the word children. According to grandma- she's the one who has been taking care of the other 6 kids so the Ann Curry interview with Octomom has no credibility! Also- grandma has a point- if the eggs were frozen, then were they considered alive? As crazy as I think the Duggers are- they are a committed couple who appear to really love each other. They also have a source of income and the family pitches in together to save costs as much as possible. I can see DCF stepping in in the next couple of years for these children because I think Grandma will make sure that Octomom doesn't get to keep them all.

I may be personally judging the Duggers for being fame whores who are doing it for the attention, but even without my judgment there's also no disputing that they are a part of the cultural moment that brings us Octomom (did you coin that? it's bril!).
I have heard speculation about California laws that inhibit doctors from enforcing their ethical issues on an individual's reproductive choices. It could all be malarky and I am really not motivated enough to dig to find an answer about the California situation.

Of course the Grandmother is pissed. She is the one taking care of these children half the time!
Who do you think took care of the other six kids the last few months octomom was on bed rest in the hospital?

I think she got some sort of disability settlement at some point in her life that netted her 150k or something like that. I also think that I read her mother didn't even know about that money. Like Namo, though, I don't enough to research the concrete answer.
You know, I'm sure infertility is sad and all, but there have got to be OTHER things that infertile people want out of life besides carrying babies to partial term resulting in multiples, low-birth weight and all sorts of medical problems. Three, four and five times over.
The world is lousy with overpopulation, but anyone with 10 grand can have a little stuffed up them. I'm really tired of the applause these people get. The octuplet Mom is an anomaly in regard to the general public reaction to science fiction inspired multiple births. Childbirth ain't an inalienable right. It's high time we stop acting like it is.

The thing is, OctoGramma is playing out her anger in the media, the way Cindy Anthony, the mother of Tot Mom Casey Anthony, who murdered tot Caylee Anthony (got all that?), became addicted to the camera lens.
ETA A quick search just revealed to me the (old?) news that there will be a public funeral for Caylee and Cindy is quoted as saying her granddaughter "now has her angel wings and will be watching over so many other children...."
Which isn't even accurate theology. But who cares? Where are the cameras?

StockardFan, I think that the law for how many eggs a doctor can give out is different from state to state.
Also, I doubt that the doctor will have his license taken away. Yes, the mother could have some mental issues, but she could have walked in the door and seem sane etc and the doctor wouldn't have known otherwise. It would be one thing for that to happen. It would be another thing if it was clear as day to the doctor that she wasn't mentally fit to have this many kids and yet he gave her the eggs regardless.

Winston, in the brief interview with Ann Curry, it was obvious Octomom wasn't playing with a full deck! Should the doctor lose his license? Probably not. it takes a lot (and I mean a lot!) to lose ones medical license. It should though be suspended pending investigation and some sort of censure should be dealt if it is determined he acted unethically r with the knowledge that this woman was unstable.
We the people now own a stake in banks and octuplets!

Medical ETHICS. Absolutely, the doc bears responsibility. Women were never meant to have litters of children.
What moron thought, "well, she says she wants lots of kids, poor thing, she only has 6 under the age of 7, she's single with no source of income, no spouse, sure, she can handle EIGHT MORE, all at once."
