At the risk of trying to get this thread back on topic, for those of us who are ashamed and embarrassed by our Congress, there are things we can do beyond complaining on internet boards. i dont think i believe this but according to Gallup, only 4% see gun control as a top priority

Just out of curiosity, how would these new background checks have prevented the Newtown shootings? All of those guns were purchased legally, with a background check, and were obtained illegally by the shooter. Whenever my family have purchased a gun we have had background checks done before being able to buy it, and wouldn't be able to if we had a criminal record.
It wouldn't have helped save any of those children because the guns were purchased legally, and still would have been purchased legally by his mother even with the new background checks, but they were stolen and used to commit that heinous act.

Just out of curiosity--and leaving aside Newtown for a moment--how many crimes are committed using illegally obtained firearms?

So Abby,is the way you see it, "why make it harder to obtain guns since that wouldn't have helped in Newtown? There goes your twisted brain. We're trying to whatever little we can, and making it harder to obtain guns is a step in the right direction.

But, Jane, stolen cars get involved in accidents. So why require licenses, registrations, insurance? That wouldn't help in the one instance I want to hold up as a reason not to do the thing that's obvious to everyone but sociopaths.
