re: Hairspray boycott

Seeing promo clips and photos of Travolta make me sad. That role belongs to Harvey. Travolta just looks like a mess. I will be pleasantly surprised if he does anything good with the role. His presence in the film makes me so not excited to see it.

re: Hairspray boycott

I'm already boycotting this film simply because Marc is a jerk. I really don't have a problem with the Scientology people. They can believe whatever they want to believe as long as it doesn't bring physical or emotional hurt to others. Same for me. The only thing I don't understand is why gays are being urged to boycott the film as if Trovolta's cross dressing has anything to do with being gay?

The part has been played very famously by Divine and Harvey, and not quite as famously, Bruce Vilanch. It's a gay iconic role which in the past has been played by openly gay vocal men.

Every time I hear Travolta utter a line in the trailer, I want to vomit. I wish I could just mute his voice.

"It's a gay iconic role which in the past has been played by openly gay vocal men."

Michael McKean (who did very well in the role, apparently) might be a little surprised to hear this.

re: Hairspray boycott

So are we supposed to boycott RENT everytime a straight guy plays Mark just because Anthony Rapp is an openly gay "vocal" man?

re: Hairspray boycott

Oh, come on. The two original Edna's in either of the incarnations were Divine and Harvey. Both gay icons. And it IS considered a gay iconic role. I wasn't calling for a boycott, I was just stating why some think it's a gay issue.

The Mark role is not what I would call iconic. And technically, Anthony Rapp is openly bisexual.

Not to mention the completely inappropriate, "oh no she

re: Hairspray boycott

WHY Boycott John Travolta?

out of ANYONE in Hollywood, he has had the GAYEST career than anyone.

Discodancing diva in Saturday Night Fever
motorcycle LEatherman in Wild Hogs
Cowboy ridin bronco in Urban COwboy
and who can forget
the broadway chorus dancer wearing a loincloth in Stayin' ALive???

he's basically played evey village person and then some.....

he out of anyone...should boycott himself first.

re: Hairspray boycott

the boycott was mentioned due to the scientology connection, not a divine/harvey/gay thing. scientology is heavily anti-gay. JT is a scientologist, thus....

re: Hairspray boycott

The Catholic church is also anti-gay...would you propose boycotting any movie where a lead actor is Catholic?

re: Hairspray boycott

RobbO, you are right, but why call for a boycott of this movie and not every movie every Scientologist ever made? I think a big part is the fact that he is playing this specific character. cough..(poorly)..cough

I tend to stay away from Travolta & Cruise films now. I love Jason Lee, though. :/

I think he simply seems miscast.
Scientologist, Catholick, whatever.
