Has Gay Pride Jumped the Shark?

Posted: 6/22/07 at 1:58pmDiva, you've reminded me of a presentation I did for one of my courses in college. The class was "Cultural Diversity in Contemporary Theater" (or something like that); one of the plays we read was Angels in America, so when it came time to choose a "culture" on which to do a presentation, I convinced my partner that we should choose GLBT. The professor told us to rent the movie "Paris is Burning" and use that as kind of a jumping-off point. We rented it & watched it, but neither of us felt that that film represented the gay people we knew (or were, in my case) at all. So we ditched the professor's idea, and most of our report ended up being about GLBT history. I learned a lot in doing that research, and I could tell that the class didn't know about most of the things we talked about either.

Here's the thing.
When someone says GLBT 'lifestyle', I always have to ask, "What IS that, exactly"?
Every Gay person I know lives their own lifestyle. There isn't just ONE. So, when it comes to the festivals, you do get to see that there is a different lifestyle for every human that is there. No one fit into ONE category.
I ALWAYS had some person yelling at me, telling me that I wasn’t speaking for all Gay people (when I was an MC). I always said, “I never claimed that. I’ve just claimed to be more exciting to look and listen to than you.” THAT sells newspapers.
And ActOr,
Now I see you are just making excuses. “Ex-Boyfriend”, “Dog”… Maybe you should ask yourself what your really hiding from.

Exactly Diva. Just as there are as many ways to live as there are people in the world, there are as many ways to be gay as there are gay people in the world.
I think the only proper definition for GLBT 'lifestyle' is that we have romantic/sexual relationships with people of the same sex as ourselves. That's it. It says nothing about someone's character or interests.

You've got so many excuses for NOT living, it's a wonder you can wake up every morning and face the world.
Go to the parade for an hour or so--and try not to look at the "freaks" rimming in the streets (!). Try to find the Lesbians and Gays in Recovery, or the Gay and Lesbian Vets, or the Gay Episcopalians or Buddhists, or the Lesbian Lawyers or the Gay Kids or the Gay Parents or the chorus or the marching band or the softball team or, yes, the freaks.
Because you know who's the biggest freak of all, ActOr721?
Happy pride, baby.

Posted: 6/22/07 at 2:41pmI hate the image that comes across at pride of us Gays. It generalizes us all into one catagory of people... and I know I am VERY different than the guys running around in speedo's or chaps

If that's all you see at pride, that's sad...and the opposite of pride.
I've never worn chaps or a speedo to pride...ever. I've never felt out of place, so I'm simply not getting what the problem is.
Perhaps you haters would rather find the "Straight Acting" Parade...

Darling, saying that as you stand flanked by two fabulously campy drag queens doesn't help your point.

Then let me repeat myself, Jonnyboy:

I know I will get bashed for saying so, but I think parade is more shameful than anything else.
PJ does mention all the good, but the parade seems to have zero political meaning or positive cultural influence. It so hard to get any respect from the general population because these parades and most gay themed things are sexually charged. I would much prefer the lesbians to help tone it down a bit. At least they vote.
Hillary will be there and a bunch of other politicians who avoid gay politics whenever mentioned. Well there be people protesting her? No.

Ah...I see Drag Queens good...Speedos bad. Okay. Now that we have that settled.
Here's a link that shows all the participants and the order that they will be marching in for this Sunday's parade in NYC.
Check it out...surely there's something in this list for everyone.

I know who Johnny is.
He'll dress up in drag because that's the only way he'll get attention. If her just went out in speedos, no one would care.
And before you say it, I only got dressed when I was being PAID.
