Thanks YWIW!

I do find the word "gay" to be offensive as used by a lot of society. The word is used by many to describe something negative. The perfect example is the phrase "That's so gay." Or when bullies in school call you a "gaywad."
Well, yeah, but it's not like you never hear someone calling someone a "homo."
But all this is just to say that I find the word "gay" to be more offensive than the word "homosexual" as used by society today.
I still think homosexual is more loaded.

Brings back awful memories of academia, does it, Phyl?
I don't have any problem with the word "homosexual." It is what it is. There's nothing derogatory about it. It's the scientific term for the orientation.
"Queen," however, drives me nuts. So does "queer." I don't like or embrace either one.
I also don't like "big sissy-fairy girly-boy," but hey, that's just me.

Taz, I love me some ginormous booty too. If it wasn't considered sexual harassment in the work place I'd have a slap-ass fest with a coworker (she's super dreamy
) but alas folks are just so sensitive about their posterior being man handled. Whatever.
I'm with Besty on this one. I don't mind the term homosexual given its origin, but if some ignorant jackass calls me a "dyke" or a "vagitarian" I'm kickin' ass and takin' names!!!!

I once heard Peter Gennaro whisper about a particularly svelte chorus boy, "He's a little minty, don'tcha think?"
Peter was married and had kids but seemed more than a little minty himself.
Even though it was insulting, I kind of loved the word.

This thread is a hoot! Good advice to the original question and then the usual good humor from all, after all is said and done.
This one is for Reg......I had a male friend years ago that would go up to well-endowed females and say "Let's go play Lego", they would respond with "Lego??????", and then he would say yes that's when you put each of those luscious breasts under your armits and I put my face in your cleavage and holler "Lego!!" As you can imagine he got a mixed bag of responses.......but he actually got quite a few who would play!

"Queer" annoys me a little, so it's strange when I see it used academically ("Queer Studies").

Generally I find labels insignificant, but I love the terms queer, fag, cock-smoker, sissy, nelly, ball-guzzler....ummmm... more than "gay" or "homosexual." They're pretty boring. I just like saying "faggot" like Jerri Blank (aka Amy Sedaris). Oooh, "sack wrangler" is a good one. I also like the simple, "family." "You think (s)he's 'family'?" "Uhhhhh-huh."
But, none of these labels trouble me because I don't let it. They are just words, and I wish people would stop giving them more power than they deserve. Someone can use fag derogatorily but I own it and use it for my own purposes. I revel in its rudeness.
This thread is hilarious and I wanted to take a moment to add to Aussie-Tiara-Peters's dilemma:
Be yourself. You will make yourself incredibly unhappy, otherwise. What you should be thinking about is how you can better assert all the unique things that make you who you are. Your confidence will attract people no matter how awkward you think you are.
Go volunteer at some LGBT organization (I used to volunteer at an LGBT library), perhaps find a gay writers group or something. Don't go to bars if you don't want to go to bars. Maybe venture and check out 'the scene' once in a while looking for other guys who look just as bored as you. In doing so be yourself, but be open to other people's perspectives. There's a lot to be gained from knowing the butch and sissies alike.
I used to have a spectrum of gay friends from cruising about, but I've whittled them down to the people who are just good friends, sack-wrangling or not.... or whatever they are. The labeling game is pretty crude, I feel. No one is so easily defined. Or, they shouldn't be....
Everyone is going through what you are going through all the time. But, it is especially intense from 19 - 21 because you are taking responsibility, finding who you are, what's important to you--what's not so important. Your lifetime identity is forming, you think, but it's always forming. You're always discovering a new you.
I think Sunday In The Park With George explores this theme nicely.
K, let's get off that soap box and maybe break it into kindling.

I love, Love, LOVE this thread. Like a lot. You people make my life.
Phyl, I don't find either term offensive (gay or homosexual), but if I had to pick one that was more so it would be gay simply because of origin. "Homosexual" is a scientific word that bigots seem to enjoy throwing around, but gay at an actual point in time before it was exclusively used to describe homosexuals was used to describe any lose or carefree behavior devoid of morals. Sleeping around, prostitution, adultery, and the like. Of course, most non-gay people don't know that so I guess I shouldn't care either way.
I also think we need to lighten up on qolbinau, he's a n00b in need of some slight social deprogramming.
Society is a dumbass, don't let him and his view of a "real man" dictate your dating choices. I've personally grown to find every spectrum of gay attractive, but admittedly I started off thinking like you. (Does that make me an equal opportunity ho?) The awesome, awesome, insanely amazing besty with assists from all the other awesome BWW posters pretty much gave you what you needed. Welcome to gay!

And as for the looks,
you CAN improve the way you look if you would like to. This passed October (after I came home from a life changing trip to New York) I randomly decided that I don't like my image. Like you, I am self conscious about my skinny figure as well as many other things. I decided to
A) Get out and exercise a little
B) Dress in nicer clothing
C) Use a good acne product
D) Find a good hairstyle (THAT can be frustrating, BELIEVE ME!!!)
E) Switch from glasses to contacts (I'll officially make the transition on Tuesday).
I checked Facebook & damn, Jazzy! You are looking pretty cute...

I know, Jazzy, my sister saw me on your facebook page and she said, "Oooh, who's that, he's cute!" I told her you wouldn't be interested in her, haha.
Qolbinau, two of my closeted friends (I knew they were gay although they insisted they were straight) recently met each other for the first time, really hit it off, and are now dating... you never know what connections you'll make by chance. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people you know are actually gay. If 1 in every 7 people is gay, you might know more gay people than you think.

I remember a time when I was just a baby gayette, and I thought, 'I could never EVER give a blow job.' It was just too, too icky for me to comprehend.
Things change. A lot.
Oh...and you will be SHOCKED by what you end up finding attractive after a while. Ugly sex can be very hot.

I'm still a little gayette, but I have no reservations about giving a blowjob. LOL.

Does "ugly sex" refer to sex with an ugly person or sexual acts considered "ugly" by others?
Or both?

I guess both. From what I hear an ugo with a sex swing and candle wax can be pretty good.....if not a little daunting. Of course I don't personally know of such things. Let's just say I know a guy who knows a guy.
