The reason I am mocking the need to tell the origin story YET again, is not because of the Donner movies. That is hardly the only source. Besides the '50s TV series which managed to tell the origin in 30 seconds every single week, there was Lois & Clark in the '90s, Smallville in the 2000s, and an almost uncountable number of animated TV series and animated videos.
My point is, children emerge from the womb knowing Superman's origins and this bizarre new-culture of the do-over is getting really bad.
Whole generation doesn't know the Superman origin? You mean the generation that's been watching SMALLVILLE?

I'm guessing they felt the need to tell the origin story again (with their own twists) was because the studio was involved in lawsuits with the heirs of the creators of Superman. I believe they would have lost the rights to the origin story (among other aspects of Superman) had they lost.
Honestly....I forgot all about "Smallville." I've only watched an episode here and there so it wasn't standing out in my mind. My bad.
Wildcard - I read the book that outlines the history of Superman and according to the lawsuit, they have to make a Superman movie every 5 years or Warner Bros. loses it.

So it's like Spidey and they're just going to start again every three years? They just need to start a story en media res, because right now this superhero stuff is like No Exit.

Superman Returns was actually en media res, and it was considered a disappointment. I remember not enjoying it all that much, but I saw it at run down theatre and what I really remember about it is that my ass hurt for two hours because of the crappy seats.

I always thought it bombed because the world is Supermaned out. I figured that's why they didn't put Superman in the title of this one.
No, I think it disappointed at the box office because of word of mouth. It opened huge at $76 million and then started fizzling off. Had the movie been the masterpiece it thought it was being, it would have been well received monetarily.
If audiences agree with critics though, Man of Steel will become an even bigger disaster as it has such an "Ok, Superman, this is your last chance to get it right" vibe around it. If this movie fails, I fear his only hope will be in a Justice League movie, where he could shine as a team player, the same way Hulk (who had two film failures to his name) did in Avengers.

Or maybe his story has been retold enough. Maybe it's time for the superhero movie to die off.
There is not a person alive who could possibly care that does not know that Superman comes from Krypton. Comic books, a dozen cartoon shows, Smallville, Lois and Clark, George Reeves' Superman, Superman '78, Superman Returns from just a few years ago, and general pop culture knowledge have seen to that. My 98-year-old great grandmother knows what kyrptonite is. There is absolutely no reason for a complete "reboot" from the beginning other than that it is in vogue right now; particularly a ludicrously solemn one based entirely on the idea that everything needs to be DAAAAAARK because that means smart or something.
That said, I have my midnight ticket, so what am I helping.

While I don't agree with that last statement, I do think the genre has run its course (and I say this as someone who gives a good 20 dollars every week to Marvel.)
I love me a GOOD superhero movie, but I will concede that they have become an infestation in Hollywood.

Of the hundred or so movies that come out of Hollywood every year, 3-5 movies is hardly an "infestation." Non-musical lovers can say the same thing that too many movie musicals are being made.
With regards to Superman Returns and its failure, it was too connected to the original Donner movies. I grew up watching the Donner films but have no attachment to them. It was not iconic in my opinion. The best Superman in media is still from Superman The Animated Series which morphed into Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. The latter is on Netflix. Fans should check it out. THAT is Superman.
I like Superman: The Animated Series too; the bright retrofuture deco and streamlined design was very cool. Dana Delaney was a great Lois. (Though it doesn't hold much of a candle to the Batman series that preceded it.)
Ha, Namo yes he did. I took two cold showers. I have to say this man is super sexy. I do wish there was more of a relationship romantic story because I have never seen anyone as sexy as Henry Cavill.
I also found the suit sexy I have a giant crush now. His shoulders, blue breathtaking eyes well yeah he did give me heart murmurs.
Hot is an understatement with this actor. Blushing just thinking about him.
Just got back. I liked it a lot. Didn't love it as much as I wanted, but I'm not sulking in disappointment, the way I was with Superman Returns.
The action is INSANE. Some people are going to find it irritating and some people are going to be able to keep up with it, and love it. My only beef was that the characters with super powers moved so fast while fighting that it was very jarring to keep up. I get what they were trying to convey about the super speed, but when your audience doesn't possess these same powers, we need you to bring it down a tad so we can keep up with it using our mere human vision. Or I'm just getting too old to function, either way, I can't wait to get the blu-ray and hit slow motion to see what it all looks like in normal time.
My beef with the action is how Superman killed whole buildings full of people without a thought, and then we were supposed to care about three of them .
this superhero stuff is like No Exit.
Thank you, Namo.
It is the post 9/11 CGI crap I can't stand. Do we really need to see this? I am sure it will make buckets full of money, but you would have to give me one of those buckets to sit through another super-hero movie.
To quote Barenaked Ladies: Its all been done before.
Saw it today, Henry without his shirt "stunning" . Sadly the rest of the movie was rather dull, long and when it finally flew, was not worth the 2 hours it took to get there.
The biggest problem was the lack of Joy or Humour in this movie, the films only laugh comes in the last twenty minutes or so.
Zac, for once in your life lets try to hold a camera steady, it's not a lot to ask for. ( thankfully it did get better as the movie went on )

Gasp!

That's what I liked about it myself. I'm very connected to the Donner series (at least the first two) and was truly amused that certain lines were practically lifted from the first film. That's part of what I loved about Smallville - it had a connection to Hollywood Superman's past through casting. Annette O'Toole, Terrance Stamp, Christoper Reeve, Margot Kidder, Marc McClure, Helen Slater, Dean Cain, and Teri Hatcher. I feel like I'm forgetting someone.

Whenever someone asks me who my favorite Lois Lane is - I always say Dana Delany.

I often joke that taxes and health/life insurance rates in Metropolis must be sky high.

I believe this is the same lawsuit that didn't allow Smallville to call Clark "SuperBoy". In the episode "Absolute Justice" his code name was "Boy Scout (Flash's was "Impulse" for a similar reason). He was known is the "media" first as the "Red-Blue Blur" and later just "The Blur".

As stupid animated gifs go, that one's particular in its hideousness.
Namo, I'm glad you're able to get all your disdain for this movie off your chest in this thread.
Broadway Legend Joined: 7/22/03
Not having seen the movie, my disdain is for the recycling. I'm not against remakes necessarily, but the retreads (sorry, reboots) just so multinational conglomerates can maintain ownership of the titles, is just awful.
Having said that, I'd like to request a SPOILER for anybody who has seen the movie:
Can you tell me, WHERE does Superman come from? Who IS this guy?
TIA
So, as I made clear I had no huge hopes for this movie--I strongly dislike Snyder's work (though admittedly that's as much influenced by what I've seen of the man himself) and I had no interest ina Nolan style dark and brooding and oh-so-serious take on Superman (people have mentioned in this thread the 90s animated series--part of the terrific Bruce Timms' interconnected DC Animated Universe--and they realized that Superman works better going in the complete different direction than the one they had used for Batman.)
Some friends were going this morning, so I went along--I like Cavill, I do have a childhood love for superheroes, I was willing to give it a shot. I thought it was a hug slog, only relieved by an admittedly pretty exciting final chunk. Yes Superman Returns was pretty boring too, but in hindsight I appreciated the obvious love you could sense behind the film--and at least it was pretty to look at... Cavill and some other pretty actors aside, this film was largely ugly and unrelentingly grey seeming to me.
Namo, I'm not sure how facetious your spoiler question was, but the prologue setup on Krypton is *endless* so I don't think there will be any question about it from anyone who watched.
