Well they got my money too, along with everyone else who contributed to its $125M opening weekend take.
In fairness I was happily game for the first hour and a half or so: fine pseudo-Shakespearean acting, lovely Kansas flashbacks in a Tree of Life vein, preposterous half-naked shots of a super-hairy Henry Cavill (I would have liked to see the scene where he first tries an earth-bound razor on his Kryptonian beard). Thought Amy Adams started out lovely. All well and good.
But oh Jeez that last reel was pure torture! Did no-one in all of the Warner Bros. hierarchy not feel queasy when yet another skyscraper would topple to the ground as grey dust covered the cast in a boldfaced echo to the Twin Towers' fall? Absolutely ludicrous to call this disaster-porn a fitting reboot to the honor of Superman. Shame shame shame.
Annette O'Toole will always be the perfect Martha Kent to me.
On a note about the destruction of buildings, the scene where the plumes were taking the people as they ran through the city was horrifying and very insensitive to the post 9/11 society. When Perry and the two other Daily Planet workers were shown again the looked straight out of press reel from 9/11. Shame on you WB.
"Wish there was a Superman remake that would be a period piece where he was in the late 40's early 50's when there were still phone booths for him to duck into and fedoras, double breasted suits and pill box hats."
I do miss Superman's pill box hats.
Man of Steel is much better than Superman Returns, about which I remember nothing. Man of Steel incorporates modern ideas such as terraforming Earth to make it more like Krypton. It is a contemporary movie, and the alien angle is played up. Kal-El is proof that we are not alone. With 891 exoplanets confirmed by the Kepler Space Telescope, we are more sensitive than ever to the possibility of extraterrestrial civilizations. The Zod character seems more real. He comes off as only half-evil in that he is willing to destroy humanity to preserve his own kind. On the other hand, Kal-El (Superman) is willing to let Kryptonians perish in order to save humanity. There is the Moses/Jesus thing and periodic appearances by Jor-El's consciousness, again raising the question of whether or not consciousness survives physical death. Keep in mind this is only a movie! We learn that the "S" on Kal-El's costume is not an "S," that it is in fact a Kryptonian symbol for hope. The word "Superman" is not even mentioned until the latter part of the movie. Blowing things up is a movie staple, and Man of Steel has its share of mayhem, havoc and chaos. The final battle between Kal-El and Zod is especially violent.

I saw it this weekend and really like it. I certainly felt like I got my money's worth.
Just found this little gem for Phyllis, Jordan and all others to enjoy.
You are very very welcome.

I only read a little because I'll never see the movie but it made me giggle every time I read the word "codex."
One review I read referred to it as "a MacGuffin called the Codex."
I just got back from seeing it.
He's beautiful in the film. The more he had he shirt off, the more I liked the film.
It's really too bad he destroys the entire city to save the planet.

I wish a better movie had helped the box office make last month the highest grossing June ever.

Plus, it's also disappointing that an average film like this one broke an amazing film's, 'Toy Story 3', record for the highest opening weekend for a film that debuted in in June.
