That origin sounds interesting!

LOL Superman was never a comic I read much of, though I knew the origin story from the movies, the animated series, etc, etc, etc... This added nothing to it but for whatever reason felt like they really didn't think the audience knew any of it and so had to MAKE EVERYTHING VERY CLEAR JUST INCASE. At least from what I remember of the first movie, the Krypton backstory was revealed mid way through the film in a somewhat interesting fashion (I could be wrong--it's been ages since I've seen it) not a whole plodding start to the film.

I just found a little tidbit in the AV Club interview with Michael Shannon:

Zack’s whole premise was—and I know this could potentially sound arrogant—but this wasn’t his intention. He just said, “We should approach this like no one’s ever done this before.”

This is explains so much. And lines up nicely as I approach discussions of this movie as if no one's ever don this before. It is, as MGMT once sang, Time to Pretend.

Well that's an idiotic premise. As you said, people grow up knowing the Superman basics. Pop songs mention elements in passing because they know everyone will get it. Why just bore audiences or treat them as idiots?

(For what it's worth, I thought Shannon did the best out of any of the actors. But I tend to like him in anything--I guess this was no exception.)

Because it's never been done before!!! We are fated to pretend...

I thought the movie looked great in 3D IMAX, but I only liked it as much as I wanted to love it going in.

The movie was just too damn long for the story they were telling. It felt like it SO badly wanted to be part of the Dark Knight trilogy too.

Whoever mentioned the lack of humor upthread was completely right. Comics are full of humor, sometimes very punny humor, and it's always a terrible mistake to make these films too serious.

Still, I did enjoy parts of the film and basically felt like this was one really long prologue to set up a sequel where the fun will (hopefully) begin.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

A sequel has apparently just been officially greenlighted. I hope they use a different team completely. Batman suits the gravitas (although by the third film of the reboot I got a bit tired of that)--Superman doesn't. DC comics have a tougher time finding the right tone that Marvel has largely gotten right recently with their humourous, soapy character interactions, but I felt Superman could have tapped into that more (that was a big part of the appeal of at least the first two original films.)

I didn't see it in 3D (I would have, as I tend to like the format, but my friends weren't interested in it) and I wonder if I would have preferred the way it looked in that format. Then again, I already found the film visually kinda dark and I imagine it would have been even more so in 3D, unless they just tried to make the 2D prints match up with what you'd see with glasses as apparently they did with Star Trek.

I didn't like the film very much. I felt the big fight scene lasted WAY TOO LONG. Though I really enjoyed the acting from Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Lawrence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner.

MAN OF STEEL

Saw the film and loved it. This was not the Superman of the silver age of comics of which many seem to be expecting. This was the Superman of the modern era. It wasn't perfect but far from the bad movie people here have made it out to be.

So you saw the film and liked the movie. Did you like the film?

MAN OF STEEL

Just got back a little bit ago. At this moment the only word I can come up with is "different". That doesn't mean I didn't like it. Just that I was unprepared for such a departure. I had a few chuckles at certain lines but things someone who doesn't know much about the Superman mythos might not get.

I haven't seen it, but with several of my friends telling me it was "joyless" and "bloated," I think I'll pass and fire up my Christopher Reeve "Superman" Blu-ray instead.

EDIT: Another one said his uniform looked like it hadn't been washed ... ever.

I think I'll watch George Reeves on I Love Lucy. That'll put this whole thing into perspective. The "S" stood for "Superman" back then.

It's convenient that "hope" in Krypton starts with a letter that looks exactly like S!

Is he called "Hopeman" in the movie?

MAN OF STEEL

Well, the "S" never really stood for Superman. In most incarnations Lois is the one who named him that. It's linked to Krypton as a symbol.

I really, really, really want them to go with another director for the next film. Someone who is capable of emotions, maybe. All of Zack Snyder's films, especially this one, feel like they were directed by a sociopath. Life is so cheap in this. I want to be excited for the next Superman movie.
#95

MAN OF STEEL

I'm not sure Snyder isn't a sociopath.... Even his minor changes to Watchmen sucked elements of the humanity from Moore's comic.

And of course the S on Superman's costume did, at least at one time, stand for his name. To suggest otherwise is, well S for silly.

MAN OF STEEL

Sorry every Superman movie for me has failed. George Reeves is my Superman and always will be. He fought believable criminals. He was a human sized hero in a simpler world. Wish there was a Superman remake that would be a period piece where he was in the late 40's early 50's when there were still phone booths for him to duck into and fedoras, double breasted suits and pill box hats.

MAN OF STEEL

Go back to look at the Donner film where Jor-El wears the symbol and the other members of the council are all wearing their symbols. Or Lois & Clark where Martha Kent clearly states the emblem was in his rocket. Or Smallville where the emblem was used prominently long before he actually donned the suit in the final episode.

On Earth it's simply an "S" but on Krypton it is much more. It's a symbol. A family crest. He never showed up and said "I'm Superman". Lois was the first to call him that because he wears the "S" but he didn't wear the "S" so they would call him that.

Perhaps it was simply an "S" seventy-five years ago but it has evolved into so much more since then. "Man of Steel" may be the first to explain it blatantly but the symbol being more than just a letter is hardly a new concept.
