How I Met Your Mother finale tonight — Page 2

It totally feels like they introduced the mother just to be a baby maker for Ted, since obviously Robin can't get pregnant. I don't think I would have felt that way if he didn't get together with Robin though. It was the Robin part that did ruin it.

I was actually really hoping that the fact that Ted and his wife didn't get married right away that he was telling the story because they were actually going to finally tie the knot.

Marianne, didn't Robin later find out that she indeed could have kids? Didn't she break up with the psychiatrist because she found out that she could have kids, but didn't want them? I still agree that the purpose of the mother was as a babymaker, but I think more because Robin didn't want kids, not because she couldn't have them. But I could also be remembering incorrectly.

I would watch a whole series about how Robin met that awful wig she wore at the end.

I would join a message board where viewers critique the drag queens giving her wig advice.

I just found this line in a preview article about the episode that is also about series endings: "For some, an ending that disappoints means a complete negation of the enjoyment of everything that came before and triggers complaints of wasted time, unanswered questions, and loose threads."

I can't imagine having the type of personality like that. It must be an awful way to live.

Namo, your post just made me realize that I'm a predictable cliche. Ouch. Here I was thinking I was making a constructive contribution to the conversation.

I'm sorry if you saw yourself in what I wrote, Plat. I wasn't thinking about you when I wrote what I wrote. And again, I totally own that I am probably the wrong person having the wrong reaction.

I just get so tickled when people around here talk about this being a golden age of television! I can't take any of the shyte seriously enough to get that worked up over any of it.

This was a show I usually had on the background but I knew a lot of friends who thoroughly enjoyed it. The show really over-stretched it but really went down swinging in a way that is oddly admirable in a Don Quixote kind of way. It got pretty inconsistent in latter seasons but Cristin Milioti as The Mother was a delight. What became weird was that the show's writers took somebody so charming and crucial for latter season episodes and made her an after-thought. And she's the one who died.

I think Alan Sepinwall pointed out that, in addition to the pretty late revelation that Robin could not procreate, that the show in Season 1, the pilot(!!!), said Robin was not the mother. After that it felt like the writers knew the actors had chemistry and have been trying to play with that pretense than re-write it, reverse engineering rather than course-correcting. But they also realized they are on a network that was in the business of making money and a lot more seasons so it over-stretched. I don't think they ever quite planned for a dead mom situation all these years, like there is no way this end-game would've flew if the Mother were Victoria, for example. Perhaps they thought of scenarios where Robin would clearly be Wife #2 for Ted, but then they ran into issues of the fact Robin and Barney were also a popular couple amongst fans.

This got negatively compared to the Rosanne finale on the inter-webs. I kinda found that finale in particular to still be the most audacious of any sitcom, near St. Elsewhere finale levels of 'WHAT DID THIS SHOW JUST DO'. It was made after a really lackluster season but give it credit for never showing its cards for that shocker. The HIMYM finale was basically laid out and many people were antsy about it in addition to predicting exactly what happened.

The loves of people's lives do eventually die, sometimes terribly prematurely. And the world keeps spinning forward and life goes on. People are able to love again.

This review pretty much nails my feelings on the finale.

Loved the moment Barney met his baby. But other than that: meh. Granted, I was not a huge fan, but found it mundane. And, while I believe that you can find love more than once, I just thought this cheapened his relationship with Milioti's character.

I missed some parts of the finale last night. Are people claiming this was planned from the beginning because the back-and-forth with the kids was filmed years ago? I didn't see that exchange, so I do not know..
