SMOKE AND MIRRORS! it is kind of ridiculous how expensive things are here. i live in brooklyn and theyve been trying to get WalMart and other big stores here for years but the politicians refuse. so we have to pay more for everything here as a result, or get a ride out to Long Island.

One giant digression:

I buy way too many toiletries and have shopped at all the drug store chains in the City and have found Harmon Drugs (located in Bed, Bath & Beyond - at least the one on Broadway and 65th) to be the least expensive by far (for example, a bottle of a particular hair conditioner that I buy is $7.99 at CVS or Duane Reade, but $3.99 at Harmon).

Also, I don't buy meat (except brisket for holidays!), but the Western Beef near my apartment is so disgusting I would never think to walk in there.

I love Costco, and find it a lot of fun to shop there, but I think you have to be really careful and learn how to pack and freeze things really well, or else you can end up wasting a lot of food (just my own personal opinion, but one shared by many people I know).

I know that WalMart has tried and failed for years to get approvals, but aren't there a few Target stores in Brooklyn?

thats one way of looking at it.... usually from those outside the community, politicians on the take. but another way, usually those who live there is it would be cheaper to buy things then your Gristaldes, Duane Reades and the local SUNOCO.

How would they kill the community? sorry, if youre going to charge me $1 more for milk, or 15$ more for jeans you deserve to go out of bizniz

why should rich suburbanites pay less for food? or shop in clean stores? We should have the same choice!

EDITED TO ADD: Yes Target is great good point,only 2 though and none near me. but the community is still standing!!

Walmart is a horrible store. They are cheap because everything in there is from China or some other country that doesn't give a crap about quality. Unless I go to a drug store or the supermarket, they are my only choice close by, where I live.

Kad, that was an extremely valid argument at one point in time. But that was before Duane Reade closed all the drug stores, Starbucks killed the coffee shops, a new Chase opened up on every corner and a million other chains took over this city. New York City isn't the same place it was 50 or even 15 years ago. And as much as I can sit here and say Wal-Mart is bad and everything that I'm supposed to say about them, I still take that bus ride to Jersey to go there because with the amount of money I pay in rent to live in this city, I need to save money in other areas and places like Wal-Mart help me do that.

re Costco. I'm a member, but I have a friend with a car, and we drive out to Costco, and then there's room in the car for the huge packages. How are you who don't have a car, going to Costco and being able to transport your huge parcels back home?

You can get a car outside COSTCO to take you and whatever you get home. They only charge $15 (I think it was) to midtown so it's cheaper than getting a zipcar, like I know a lot of people do and also cheaper than a cab.

My biggest problem with Wal-Mart is that is always a huge mess in there. I went in once for some school supplies and the stuff was all over the place in the wrong spots and I could only find 3 things on a list of about 20. I found it all in one area neatly displayed at Office Depot in about 3 minutes.

One of those old lady pushcarts and an unlimited ride Metro Card.

By the time you take a taxi or car service to costco, you've lost all the savings you made by shopping there. Plus it's almost $60/year.

Walmart will never get into NYC because it's a non-union store. Target has better quality items, but as far as things like food, paper towels, toiletries, cleaning products, Walmart beats them all.

That's the truth. I think their buyers are morons. For example, in the dairy aisle, they'll have almond milk, five brands of soy milk but no chocolate milk. And my local Korean deli stocks more flavors of Ben & Jerry ice cream than Gristedes does.

And you really have to shop around. I bought a jar of Biscoff spread at Jacks 99cent store and Gristedes was charging over $3 for it.

Everyone finds there own way of making it work.

But it must be said: a great many of us are either constantly struggling paycheck to paycheck, or are very wealthy (a large percentage of very rich earthlings spends some of their time in New York), or are forced to live in either poverty or extreme frugality, or are very much in debt. Or some combination thereof.
