I Miss the Classic Disney Channel/Nickelodeon

Wtf happened to Disney? Ever since Lizzie McGuire, there have been an incoming of corny tween shows: Phil of the Future, Naturally Sadie, Suite Life, Life With Derek...and now wtf is Hannah Montana??? It's now a breeding ground for tween girls starting music careers, and they all sound the same. Lizzie McGuire was okay, and so is Raven, but most things after that were...ugh. I miss the classic Disney series, like Under the Umbrella Tree, Secret Life of Toys, even the Friday "Lunchbox" where they showed Spot and Curious George. I miss it.

EDIT: Nickelodeon too...the cartoons suck now.

I miss classic Disney AND Nickelodeon. I mean we had shows liked "David the Knome," "Salute Your Shorts," "Gummi Bears," "Kids Incorporated," "The New Mickey Mouse Club," "Pete and Pete," etc. Those were great shows, now we have gone teen serious or teen stupid (no offense to the teens on this board).

Yeah, those were the days. We had real TV back then, none of this tween-focused crap. And Britney, Justin, and Christina were real people back then. Now they are just facades.

I *loved* Under the Umbrella Tree! I even named a pet Mitzi, from the show.

Ah the memories, I loved classic Nick and Disney, I remember when I first got the disney channel, I had begged my grandma (whom we lived with at the time) to get it and she did and this was back when they had the free previews and gave out like incentive gifts...mine was a watch, I think it was Donald Duck. I loved that watch lol

Ah and David the Gnome what a great show that was, I remember waking up early in the morning and watching that. Also the Koala Bears and Pinwheel.

And I remember Disney's LunchBox, I always loved Spot! They need to have a classic Nick and Disney channel channel, I don't think I'd ever turn it off!.

Erik hit it. Trust me, if these shows were just coming on the air now, you wouldn't enjoy them much. If they were to start re-running them, the enjoyment you would get would largely be from comforting nostalgia.

Besides, everyone knows the Disney channel glory days were when they used to air Dumbo's Circus and Pooh Corner. re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

Oh my gosh! I had forgotten about Dumbo's Circus and Pooh's Corner!! How hilarious! All those big costumes...hehe.

On Nickolodeon remember the shows Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, and Bananaman? Or the show Out of Control with a young Dave Coulier?

I think there needs to be a seperate Disney channel, maybe "Classic Disney," or something, where they can show nothing but old cartoons, movies, Disneyland and Wonderful World of Color/Disney episodes, True-Life Adventures, etc. I mean, isn't there an audience out there for that? There's nothing "Disney" about the current Disney channel. It's mostly original programming aimed at young teenagers, with no obvious Disney connection at all.

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

Yeah..I love all the classic Disney movies as well as the animated shorts. That would be great!

I used to look forward to the Wonderful World of Disney Halloween special every year. I loved all those animated sequences like "Skeleton Dance", "Night On Bald Mountain" from Fantasia, and the short with Donald Duck and that killer gorilla.

God, I loved this original channel! Under The Umbrella Tree, Welcome to Pooh Corner, Dumbo's Circus, The Gummi Bears, The Wuzzles, My Little Pony Tales, Care Bears...

Do you guys remember there used to be like a train that would introduce each show? I don't know the camera would follow the train and there'd be music playing and then a voice would come on saying something like "Under The Umbella Tree is next." Something like that.

You've obviously never sat through the Cheetah Girls movie. It's not about nostalgia- ANYTHING would be better than the crap Disney is pouring out these days.

I miss the movies! "Justin Morgan Had A Horse" and "Diamonds On Wheels" (Which I believe starred a young Peter Firth!)

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

You've probably got me there. My niece loves That's So Raven, and I find it excruciating when I have to watch it with her.

But -- there have also been times when I came across rare (read: illegal, probably) recordings of shows I loved when I was a kid, and when I watched them again, my reaction was, "What the hell was I thinking?"

But it still beats That's So Raven. Or the freaky blond twins in the hotel, whatever that show is.

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

Raven is very funny.

Zach and Cody simply is the most contrite show with bad acting and horrible writing. I would like to stangle those twins!

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

Ah, yes, that's the show.

And that's probably the only time you'll ever hear me use the phrase "the freaky blond twins in the hotel" in a negative context.

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

wickedrentq, when you mentioned the train introducing cartoons it reminded me of the USA Cartoon Express that came on, well, the USA network. Of course it showed a lot of hanna barbera cartoons like Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss, and Jabberjaws (the Scooby Doo take-off with the Curley from Three Stooges-esque Shark)

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

The one Disney show I REALLY miss is So Weird... I'd love it to be on DVD.
Am I cut out to spend my time this way?
#24

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

Ahh, wickedrentq, I remember that train now! When Disney started getting less "Disney-fied" with the Zoogs, I didn't mind it at first...I liked So Weird. Whatever happened to the Zoogs by the way?

Anyways I agree they need a classic Disney Channel. I remember watching it when they had the free previews and then we finally got it! And then Zorro would come on at midnight and I'd be bummed that all my programming was over.

I used to hate Kids, Inc. and MMC. Those were older "teen" shows I thought. So I never watched them. I regret it now.

re: I Miss the Classic Disney Channel

THAT'S not classic Disney channel. CLASSIC Disney Channel is when they showed animated Disnet shorts for commercial breaks. CLASSIC Disney Channel is when they show The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh. When Rescue Rangers and Goof Troop are merely in the planning stages. CLASSIC Disney Channel is when they showed a Disney Film Of The Week. When they had exclusive Disney Channel specials. THAT'S classic Disney channel.

Today, it's all tween crap.

Honestly, I don't have a clue what children under 8 watch on TV anymore. Do they still air Sesame Street? The newest children's program I can think of is Teletubies.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
