Yes!! Give a new bird or two a home in honor of Robbie Sue. That's always been my way of dealing with the loss of a pet friend. And it's always been very healing.
Not saying it's the right thing for everyone, but I strongly believe that it's not a sign of disrespect for the pet you've just lost....quite the contrary!

I was about to post almost exactly what iflit posted. Twice.
Some of us just function better when we have a pet in our life to love, and getting a new pet soon after losing your one just means you've still got love to give.

Posted: 3/5/09 at 3:02pmThings are moving along. I called a second bird store and the guy told me he suddenly is getting tons of requests for african greys, so he's going to try to get some in this month. Of course, these are babies, which are better to start off with. the other two birds are one year old already.

Posted: 3/5/09 at 3:07pmSome friends of mine lost a much loved Alsation last Autumn. Whilst she wants to find a new pet to fill the hole he is not ready to do so, and so they are having to work through their different ways of grieving together, and that ain't easy either.

My experience is that I couldnt think of replacing my cat (my partner's cat died 6 months later - so we had two kids die). It took us 4 years to adopt again...
I think it can be a big mistake to rush into another adoption, but know that it's an individual's decision and have full faith, jane, that you'll make a good one.

Jane, I'm sorry I am late to this thread and expressing my sincere sympathy.
Everyone has said everything so beautifully. I hope you are finding comfort in knowing that people care about you, and share in your grief. And I hope that you remember how much you loved your pet, and how that love was returned.
Sending you hugs and keeping you in my thoughts.

Thank you thank you thank you everyone! It's funny, about eight people told me that they were hesitant to mention getting another parrot, and I had already decided to do that!
Doodle, there's a specific reason for my wanting another parrot right away. I live alone (by choice), but Robbie Sue was the other presence in my life for over 30 years. Before him, I had another parrot named "good girl" (if there was ever a lie, lol). she flew out the window, and I got Robbie Sue immediately. The absence of a bird to talk to and watch every movement I make is unbearable. I need a little partner here, and I have no reason to wait.
I had originally wanted only an african grey, but I'm changing my mind, I think. Now i want a double yellow. I'm getting ready to leave now for the bird store.
I'll be back with an update!

Jane...I said that was my experience and that I trusted you to make the right choice for yourself...there was no judgement, just my general opinion.
Best of luck today.

There weren't any birds available through the stores here, so I researched and called a breeder in PA. My baby will be ready and shipped around Apr. 1! I'm so excited!
She's a congo african grey.

Good for you, Jane! How old will the baby be when he/she (Which is it, do you know what you're "having" yet?
) arrives?

the baby will be 12-14 weeks old. They don't give them to owners before that, as they're weaned and have to be eating on their own.
I asked for a female because I have a female name picked out. The breeder said two of them were smaller and two were larger so she's assuming the smaller ones are girls, so I ordered one of them. Can't wait!
