Just came back from the Dreamgirls movie and Jennifer Hudson stole the show! I'm Tellin You, She needs to win an Oscar!
When she sings "I'm Telling You" the entire theater applauded. Brava! I have not seen such a great performance since Jennifer Holliday on Broadway.

The film was fantastic. Jennifer stole the show but there were some wonderful faces in the film. The actor who played the plant in Little Shop of Horrors had a cameo in the beginning of the film. I also saw him in the audience at Martin Short a few weeks ago and at a reading of I LOVE YOU BECAUSE. He was wonderful in the film. Eddie Murphy was incredible. I never knew he could sing. The man should get an Oscar nomination. He was outstanding.

I loved every second of this wonderful film.
Jennifer Hudson better win an Oscar.
Brava! If you have not seen the film you really need to see this film. It is outstanding. In addition, I hope they bring the show back to Broadway where it belongs. If that happens they need to cast Jennifer Hudson as Effie White.

I'm Tellin You- I smell many Oscars! We love Jennifer Hudson!!!!

OMG!!!! She was incredible! I am so happy for her and she deserves everything that comes her way! People stood up in the theatre after her song. She was just...wow.

Beyonce wasn't that bad either. She has improved a lot. I just think that she need a little more umph. But lord knows she has the voice!

Anika was so cute. She is just good. She doesn't get enough recognition at all. I thought for a moment that she could steal the movie but the movie belonged to Jennifer.

Yes, it was basically amazing! I have never seen something captured so beautifully in a movie...it was all it lived up to be and more.

You know what would make an amazing concert?
Carol Woods. Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Holliday singing together at the Metropolitan Room.

For one night only. Oh, maybe they should also add Felica P.Fields.

She was amazing... and the audience applauded at the end... which was totally weird and cool at the same time. She was great! I thought the entire cast was wonderful. (Even Beyonce, even though I had low expectations for her!)

yea seriously.. i mean her role is not big enough to warrant a best actress nom, but people really need to get off her back. Whether she's being a diva or not, there are two important factors:

1. This movie basically wouldn't have been made without her participation
2. She does a fine job. She looks great and is never bad in the acting department. "Listen" if a little different from the sound of most of the rest of the songs is a great moment in the film and she sings the $hit out of it.

the theatre i was in broke into applause three separate times during "And I'm Telling You..."

And more throughout the rest of the film.

I loved it.

sondhead, although I think Beyonce should get the due credit her fine work in the film deserves, saying the movie wouldn't have been made without her is ridiculous.

They were very skeptical to cast her, and made her go through an audition and a screen test before they'd even CONSIDER her, let alone build the entire thing around her. Jamie Foxx was already on board at that point in time, and the movie was well into pre-production.

Make no mistake about it.. this was not (and is not) a 'Beyonce vehicle,' and her status (while deffinetly an aid in ticket sales) did nothing to speed along the development of the project.

Yeah...it made me very happy to see a movie with a big name where the name WASN'T the star! Jennifer Hudson was incredible, and same with the audience breaking into applause after her big number. Though the Hairspray trailer before the movie made me want to cry....if their going to make a musical movie, it has to be made like THAT.

This was the best made musical movie since HAIR. You know why?
The singers could sing. Same thing with Hair. If the Chicago movie used Brent Barrett, it would have been a stronger film.
This film used talented singers for the important roles. They did use Eddie Murphy and he could sing. I was very impressed with Murphy.
As long as the Dreamgirls could sing! And they used my favorite PLANT! re: I'm Telling You- She Better Win An Oscar!

Jennifer's I'm Telling You was breathtaking... inredible. She should win an Oscar just based on that. Everyone did well though. I was impressed with Beyonce's acting chops, she really was Deena. Don't think she will have a chance to win an Oscar and probably wont be nominated considering it wasn't really a lead..
ANIKA!!! She almost stole the movie. She is so freakin natural.
And EDDIE MURPHY... also should get an Oscar nom. He was superb.

I am jumping on the Jennifer Hudson bandwagon. She was incredible and definitely deserves the Oscar.

I would say Dreamgirls is the greatest movie musical since the Sound of Music. The Hairspray movie musical better be good because Dreamgirls will take all the awards in this category.
So sad they didn't use Harvey. The film wont stand up to the beautiful black women of Dreamgirls. With Harvey, they would have stood a chance.

We know they're black -- why do you have to keep calling them black women? Do you call Christine Ebersole a white woman?

I ran to see the movie yesterday with no expectations whatsoever. Critics love one thing & it's crap. Then they hate and it's good...so I went to see what all the hoopla was about! Was NOT disappointed! What a great film!!

Let me start by saying, I was not rooting for Jennifer Hudson to win Idol nor am I a Beyonce fan at all. But Jennifer had me in TEARS after AITYING!!! That was a GREAT rendition and I saw a few people wiping their tears. Bravo Jennifer!!! Great song for you!! People started clapping at the end of that too!!! LOL!

I thought Beyonce looked gorgeous and while she doesn't blow anyone away w/ her singing, her rendition of "Listen" was nothing short of amazing! What a powerful song! Should win the Oscar/Golden Globe or whatever. Jennifer WILL win the Golden Globe too. Not sure about the Oscar but I wouldn't be surprised either. Anika was good too!!! I loved her 'smiling' persona...great voice! Jamie Foxx reaked of used car salesman (LOL!) and the entire cast did a great job!!!! Looking forward to award season!

Great review, Corine, I hope we can look forward to many more of your well written and insightful reviews when/if the Corner ever reopens for business.

One point, however, HAIRSPRAY and DREAMGIRLS will NOT be in competition with each other for awards. (Maybe the Grammy, but who knows how the heck they do things there.) So there is no need to worry about one getting all the Oscars over the other.

PEACE.

Blueroses,
I am commenting on a number in Marc Shaiman's show. I am not a bigot.
PS I had a Nanny who was closer to me than my own Mother and she is a beautiful black woman. She and I are very close. So, please don't take what I said in the wrong context.
