Violet,
I completely agree. Say what you want, but teenage girls are connecting with the books, and it is sparking reading with these girls and others. Anything that does that can't be all that bad.
I also agree that it is good to see a different portrayl of sex and love. I love Gossip Girl as much at the next person, but that type of entertainment is definitely saying something to young girls. It's nice to have something so popular that has a different POV.

I wonder what the Mormon Ernest Hemingway thinks of the big old homo film her leading man did:

Yeahhh, but that's like congratulating an anorexic for eating a piece of junk food.
I know girls who have dumped their boyfriends because they don't fit their Edward Cullen ideals. I'm not exaggerating. I think that's just plain unhealthy. Because it's pretty clear that Bella's got some serious social problems going on-- she seems to think that any normal humans are not worth talking to, or something weird like that-- and she has these delusions of superiority despite the fact that she's totally average herself. I think that encouraging girls to become obsessed with this fantasy romance can't be any more healthy than encouraging boys to think that they're really Jedis or something like that.

Just got back from the movie. Not fabulous, but not terrible either. Many things were not as I'd pictured them...but then that's true of most book to movie adaptations.
I thought the baseball game and the ballet studio sequences were the most riveting. I was prepared to be disappointed by Kristen Stewart (she's not at all how I pictured Bella. She was always Amber Tamblyn in my mind) but was pleasantly surprised by her performance. I know he says he chose to play Edward as bipolar, but I didn't really think his character took off until we got "happy Edward".
I didn't like moving the sequence of when Bella learns about Edward being a vampire and combining it with the meadow scene. I loved the revelation sequence as it happens in the book as part of a car ride, because I think so often great discussions happen as you're driving. And then the meadow...that's something special Edward wants to share with her, not somewhere he takes her to scare her.
And finally...was it necessary for Edward to always be wearing eyeliner?

#57re: I saw TWILIGHT last night and...
Posted: 11/24/08 at 6:34pmI think Amber is beautiful, but Bella is described as average and plain looking.

No, didn't Bella only THINK she was average looking while in fact she was very attractive? I believe that Edward told her that everyone else in school thought differently at one point during the first book.
Either way, Amber would have been a great choice, but I like Kristen as well.

Oh I think you're right Robert, maybe it was just she who thought she was average looking? I can't really remember at the moment.

You know, I really enjoyed it but I guess I went in with the expectation that it was going to be what it was :P
I also liked Cedric Diggory, but he needs to hit the gym for the next one. Edward is supposed to be studly. I'm still a bigger Jacob fan.
Namo, has Stephenie Meyer ever said anything anti-gay or said she donated to Prop 8?

Whoa! I completely disagree with this. First of all, reading anything is better than wasting the hours away on MySpace, playing video games or watching television all night long. Twilight has a plot, literary elements and allusions, vocabulary, and is creating excitement for reading in general.
Plenty of girls have always been intrigued with fantasy romance. From the moment Cinderella is read to them. And you know, romance isn't such a bad thing. Do you think that it is healthy to surround young teenage girls with shows such like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl? While I love these two shows, what they encourage is no worse (if not worse) than what Twilight might encourage.
As for encouraging unhealthy social habits--- well, yes. Excess of anything isn't healthy. And following the aspirations of literary characters is never a good idea. But that doesn't mean that the content in the book should be blamed. And let's face it, if a girl is dumping her boyfriend because he doesn't live up to a fictional being then she probably isn't that connected to the boy in the first place or ready for the type of relationship that she is engaged in...
I just think there are other spheres of influence to be concerned about before you start ripping apart a book with very little offensive content. Just my two cents.

Mormons tithe 10% of their income to the church. She is a Mormon. The Mormons were instrumental in the success of Prop 8.

I am a huge fan of the books. Yes, I know I am not the target demographic, but I must admit, I truly loved them.
That being said, I saw the movie opening night and when it was over, my friend and I turned to each other and said "that's not the book *I* read."
The movie had great potential but failed to live up to it. Not to mention they left out crucial plot points and key lines and moments when they translated it from book to movie. There was absolutely no chemistry between Bella and Edward (and yes, Robert needs to bulk up a little/work out and become more muscularly defined), Robert overacted, Kristen underacted and half the time it felt like they were being forced to be around each other.
I know the book is long, but I feel they rushed the story by cramming it into 2 hours on the dot. Had they made it two and a half, maybe, they could have expounded upon some of the issues.
And Bella just getting in the cab to go to the ballet studio was crap.
I have to go again, cause I'm taking the kids to see it - at their request - so I'm hoping I'll like it more after I've sat through it a second time. We'll see.

CJR - I saw it twice (with two different people), and I liked it alot better the second time. I too went to the midnight showing, and while that was fun, I felt I had a different experience the second time when the theatre was relatively quiet. The thing I noticed the second time is a bit more chemistry between Edward and Bella - which is what I felt was lacking the first time around.
I thought it was beautifully filmed.

What are you talking about? It was almost amazingly faithful to the book. They did a terrific job of capturing even minor characters. I don't really see why anyone who enjoyed the books wouldn't enjoy the movies. They're both silly escapist fiction.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this, but did anyone else really enjoy the chick from Camp as Jessica?
Namo, I bought the books before the vote. I sold my soul to Stephenie Meyer before I knew what was coming for me. Ah well.

Calvin,
I got a laugh out of your link:
"While it is widely acknowledged that Lorca was infatuated with Dalí, the artist always denied ever entering a relationship with him. Dalí (in typical contradictory terms) claimed:
“He was homosexual, as everyone knows, and madly in love with me…He tried to screw me twice... I was extremely annoyed, because I wasn't homosexual, and I wasn't interested in giving in. Besides, it hurts. So nothing came of it."
'Besides, it hurts'...
SO, he has taken it up the butt before.

I have to admit, I was waiting for:
"Do I dazzle you?"
"Frequently"
And I must say, that Taylor Lautner's performance made me a bit more eager for the "New Moon" movie...which you know is going to happen if the legions of tween girls continue to go see this movie. And I was never on "Team Jacob"...LOL

From the Summit website:
SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES TWILIGHT SEQUEL - NEW MOON
Los Angeles, CA November 22, 2008 — Summit Entertainment announced today that the studio is officially moving forward with the production of NEW MOON, the second installment of its filmed franchise TWILIGHT, the action-packed, modern day vampire love story. The movie will be based on the second novel in author Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series titled, New Moon. The first movie in the TWILIGHT franchise, the self-titled TWILIGHT, arrived in theaters this weekend to sold-out showings.
Stephenie Meyer stated, "I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment. I'm thrilled to have the chance to work with them again on NEW MOON."

Yeah I never really liked Jacob until Breaking Dawn, but I LOVED Taylor Lautner's Jacob, it makes me excited for New Moon.
I also loved Jessica (Anna Kendrick)! She was so funny. I also loved Mike (Michael Welch), them two and Charlie (Billie Burke) did so well with the little they had to work with. They all stole the show for me.

Though I was at a late showing, it was quiet in the theater. I saw it in a larger theater and it was pretty empty. Maybe 55 people in a theater that could seat 250/300. So there definitely weren't outside aspects taking away from my enjoying the movie. My friend Jen and I just kept looking at each other going WTF?
Singingwendy, I was also waiting for:
"You're doing it again"
"What?"
"Dazzling me"
I felt like because the movie was so rushed, so was the progression of Bella and Edward's relationship. You weren't able to really get a sense of the delicacy of it all.

I also loved who they got to play Jessica and Charlie(he stole the movie) and I am excited for New Moon, I did like Jacob more in the movie then the book.
I have to say the whole thing that girls break up with their boyfriend cause they aren't Edward has been happening for years. Mr Darcy and Mr Rochester ruined men for me for a little.
I saw it twice now and actually liked it more the second time, you catch more things the 2nd time. I didn't notice that when Bella is trying to hurt Charlie when she is fleeing James she opens her bedroom door and Edward is hiding behind her door.
I too was waiting for the dazzle line but I like how you could tell that most girls were "dazzled" by him. Again movie wasn't perfect but it was good

I really liked the movie. I wasn't expecting to. I found it really interesting so see a film, even a cheesy campy one, in a room full of people who had all read the book. We all laughed at the same things. We seemed to find much of the same ridiculous. It was corny, but it was fun.
Liked:
*I didn't care for Edward in the beginning. I didn't think he was handsome enough, but he grew on me.
*I liked Bella. I thought she was cast well.
*I loved Alice, even though her hair wasn't black and LOVED Emmett.
*I really liked Esme even though I thought I wouldn't. (I kept picturing Ava from Grey's Anatomy) Her part was pretty tiny though.
*And the Camp geek in me kept wanting Angela to say, "She's f*cked, I'm ready and the g*ddamned show must go on!"
What I hated:
Carlisle: I will never see that dude as anyone but Mike, the ass, in Can't Hardly Wait.
Jasper looked constipated and there was nothing attractive about him.
Rosalie is supposed to be a tall, practically perfect, natural blonde whose beauty just blows people's minds. My take on Rose in the book was that she was a bitch, but just so beautiful that you couldn't help but have a fondness for her. I didn't genuinely dislike her until the 4th book. I hated her from the first scene she was in in the movie.

Edmund? Who is that?
I think what I missed most in the movie is the banter. I loved the banter between Edward and Bella in the book, and I don't think there was enough in the movie.

I meant Emmett. I realized after posting, then the thread just fell off the main page...lol.
Oh and upon a second watch, the time line annoys. She gets there in March and Mike says the prom is a little over a month away. The movie ends at the prom. Edward said he had been sneaking in Bella's window for the past few months. How is that possible? The whole movie takes place over 6 weeks or so. They should have left it as the Spring Fling.
