Ok, that does sound a little dramatic but it's true. I was depositing my paycheck this morning when just as if it was straight out of a movie, a guy with a ski mask and a gun comes running in... everyone was fine, noone got hurt, and I don't know how much he got away with cause you bet your butt this girl jetted out of there quick!!!
NOTE TO EVERYONE IN CA: if you call 911 from your cell, your call goes to the CHP and you can be put on hold for a long time. I was still on hold by the time the police got there.
So yeah, that's how my weekend started, how about you guys?

But at least Stephanie swooped in on her broom and saved everyone. It's good to have friends in high places.

p.s...I'm glad you are okay!

Posted: 2/12/06 at 2:11amYes, me too! I was next in line to go to the teller window so just a few seconds later and I would've been up there right where he was trying to get the money.

wow Popular- that is scary intense. Glad you're ok!!
And that is a totally good lesson to know about 911/cell- I remember the first time I called from my cell (witnessed a fairly bad car accident) I was on hold for so long that I finally gave up and called AAA and gave them all the info to give the police. (Did you know that you're (in theory) supposed to call 1st: someone with a landline access, to call for you, and then 2nd: try and call 911 yourself, when calling from a cell?)

Posted: 2/12/06 at 1:15pmThanks guys, it was a bit surreal... and the 911 info is pretty much why I posted. I think it's good to spread the word!

Posted: 2/12/06 at 1:23pmMy aunt was the teller during a bank robbery a few months ago. She had a gun pointed in her face and everything. She's in therapy now because of the trauma. Crazy, crazy world. I'm so glad you're ok, though. I can't imagine how scary that must be.

OK, bumping for those who didn't see this on the weekend.
I think it's important that people know about calling 911 from their cell.
As of a few minutes ago when I checked, they have still not caught the guy.

Scary.
I used to accidently call 911 all the time in high school. I'd forget to lock the keys, and a book or something would press against "9". I'd get ready to make a phone call and find one or two missed calls from 911.
After a while it got kinda funny.

Or maybe not so much hilarious as obnoxious.
Obnoxious and illegal. And the reason they don't take phone calls from cell phones to 911 seriously, which likely leads to deaths.
I am glad you are alright Popular. That was an intense thing to have happen to anyone.

Thanks for the info Popular. And I'm very glad you're okay!
I've read this before somewhere (about 911), and I think it has something to do with tracing your call. You're bouncing all over satellites and they have no idea where you're calling from, or how to route the 911 call (and to which local office). It makes sense if you think about it. One of the downsides of mobile technology, I guess.

First, glad you and everyone else was okay, Popular! What a horrible experience.
B12b is right. For a land-line call, you can triangulate the location by tracing the signal and using a GPS. It doesn't work on a cell phone, so that's the problem. Don't be too surprised if in the not too distant future, cell phone can come equipped with optional "On-Star" or similar services.
