Hey, I know all about the job market, but I can let you guys in NYC in on a little secret: temp agencies. They're a great way to get into a company, especially if you're seeking eventual full-time employment. The company I just signed with has been EXCELLENT, taking care of me and the couple of friends I recommended to them with immediate care. They're very quick to seek out jobs that fit your criteria (including the request for temp-to-perm work; I have grown tired of tossing away my experience in jobs with limited time frames).
So, basically, yeah, the job market does suck but there are ways to sneak into companies via their back doors and temping has been that back door for me.
I don't know how it looks in other major cities, however.

Darn it - I can't see the photo!
Anywhoo - I appreciate both sides of the spectrum being tossed about here - I understand how all of you feel (well - most of you!)...a lot of people will think I'm crazy to do this in this particular economy - but for years I've been taking jobs that are simply beneath my talents - or not making good use of my talents anyway...just to pay the bills - and I'm sick of it. I know how difficult it is to survive in this city but I've always landed on my feet and I have every intention of doing it again. This job is not for me - it is actually ruining my mental and physical health - I don't sleep nights, I have knots in my shoulders and neck all the time from the stress of having a boss who berates me every moment of every day - and call me crazy - but I am taking back my power and refusing to take her BS anymore. I may have to live on rice and beans for a while but believe me - its better than giving up any remaining shred of self-respect I was able to salvage after 9/11, and I refuse to go back to being one of those self-loathing sorts who lives in misery simply because people say "thats the way it is" well - thats NOT the way it is for me - not anymore folks. I intend to regain my complete self-respect, my self-love, and my self-confidance and THIS is the first step in the process.
Hallelujah!! Can I get an AMEN to that?

"I may have to live on rice and beans for a while"

You can join me at Jack's 99cent store. It's not so bad if you get there in the morning before the homeless people. Michael Musto also shops there. I saw him there the other day with an armload of Little Debbie cakes.

"Michael Musto...Little Debbie...too much info."

I was just as shocked as you. Then comes the info that Musto is writing for Newsical so I understand his need for slumming at Jacks. Ever since The Village Voice went free, Musto ain't living the high life and his sales of nude faux-Madonna posters aren't selling that well either.

Well--I'll chip in the few meagre scraps of wisdom (?) I've picked up along my career path:

You won't never find your bliss sitting trapped in a job you hate.
Your life is waaaaayyyy too short to spend it in a job you hate, dealing with psychopaths, closet cases and drunks. That's what family re-unions are for.
If you don't have kids or aged/infirm/dependent relatives of any sort, and all you are risking is your own status quo--GET OUT! I don't care what the "job market" is like, there is always some way to earn the rent while you figure it out and find something better.

Worse comest to worst--NYC laws are so incredibly pro-tenant, it'll take years before they can kick your ass out.

Ignore the nay-sayers; congratulations and good luck.

Yummy and Cheap!

ANGEL FOOD CAKE

( l (10-inch) tube cake or 12 servings )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12 egg whites
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 1/2 cups sugar, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup sifted cake flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
Fruit or frosting, optional
In large mixing bowl, beat egg whites with cream of tartar at high speed until foamy. Add 3/4 cup of the sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating constantly until sugar is dissolved* and whites are glossy and stand in soft peaks. Beat in flavorings.

Sift together flour, remaining sugar and salt. Sift about 1/2 cup of the flour mixture over whites and gently fold just until flour disappears. Repeat, folding in remaining flour mixture 1/2 cup at a time. Pour into ungreased 10 x 4-inch tube pan. Gently cut through batter with metal spatula.

Bake in preheated 375°F oven until top springs back when lightly touched with finger, about 30 to 40 minutes. Invert cake in pan on funnel or bottle neck. Cool completely, about 1 1/2 hours. With narrow spatula or knife, loosen cake from pan and gently shake onto serving plate. Top with fruit or frost, if desired.

*Rub just a bit of meringue between thumb and forefinger to feel if sugar has dissolved.

CHOCOLATE VARIATION: Omit almond extract and increase vanilla to 2 teaspoons. Reduce flour to 2/3 cup and sift in 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa. Prepare batter and bake as above.

PEACE.
