IQ Test....

Posted: 7/3/06 at 7:53pmYou need to ask more questions -- that's the only way to figure it out. I give this puzzle to my kids every year. It generally takes them a good 20-30 minutes to come up with the right questions to figure it out -- but those are 12 and 13 year olds...

Which is why this one is pissing me off so much. When i was infourth grade we did these and it wouldn't take this long...of course sinceI am the only who asked any questions, it kind of makes it more difficult.

Posted: 7/3/06 at 7:56pmdid he trip over the rock and land on something else sharp and painful? :)

Posted: 7/3/06 at 8:04pmNo - there are no bruises or marks on him of any kind. In fact, he didn't even need to necessarily have touched the rock.

ok so thisis what we knowsofar
-A guy is dead
-He is next to a rock
- the actual CAUSE of death (aside from the fact that it's related to the rock) is unknown.
-The rock could have fallen...didn't have to to kill him. At one point it did
-Size of the rock is irrelevant
- it's a mineral of some sort...
- He was not struck by the rock.
- He did not (necessarily) have a heart attack
-no marks or bruises of any kind
-he did not nessecarily even touch the rock
Are all of these statements correct?
And I am going to fireworks soon, so Ihope someone has the answer by the time I get back!

I see what could have been misleading.
The rock IS the cause of the death. What specifically happened to the man as a result of the rock as an agent of his death is unknown. For example, if someone swallowed a pill and we know the pill caused his death, but we don't know how (caused a seizure, caused a heart attack etc), then we would call the pill the cause of death but not know HOW he died. That's what happened here (but he didn't swallow the rock)

"Im not sure what you mean by a normal rock. Yes, it's a mineral of some sort..."
in my opinion thats misleading, but maybe thats just me.

Posted: 7/3/06 at 8:15pmWell, as opposed to say a rock band or something. It's a rock like a rock - I don't know how else to describe it other than saying it's like a mineral.

I'm getting into this rock thing.
Did someone throw the rock?
Was he murdered?
Or here's an idea that I thought of after awhile of thinking. It sounds to me like Superman, and the rock was Kryptonite...after the thing about a "mineral of some sort."
..just a thought.

Owwww...I was given this one by a substitute teacher in the 4th grade...
Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice all live in the same house. Bob and Carol go out to a movie, and when they return, Alice is lying dead on the floor in a puddle of water and glass. It is obvious that Ted killed her but Ted is not prosecuted or severely punished. Why?

Whoa, really? Awesome. I thought that was a total guess.
#45re: IQ Test....
Posted: 7/3/06 at 8:27pmBecause Ted is an animal? Maybe a dog - knocked Alice into a fish tank or something? I don't know - grasping...

Was it Kryptonite? Was the man's name Clark? Okay, maybe that is a stretch.
ETA: Um...okay, maybe I should have read the whole thread.

Were they drunk?
I'm thinking that Ted and, perhaps, Alice are animals? I mean, if they were people I think they should have all gone out- not that it matters.
Glass and water= aquarium?
Like if Alice was in the aquarium or something and Ted was a cat or dog or something.
Edit: nevermind. Jason got it. Good job.
I can't believe I've never heard this one and it was given to 4th graders? Wow.

Ohhhhh...Superman! I've heard that one before, actually.
Practically dead on jason...just missing a little part, which is negligible. Alice is a fish...and naturally for the story's purpose Ted's a cat.
