About the rock thing, I would have thought this man had been in the desert for months and just starved to death....


Here's an easy easy one. If you people don't get it then there's something wrong with all of you. Although you'd be surprised at how many people have trouble with it.

You go down to the laundry room to get a pair of socks from the dryer. All the socks in the dryer are either black or white. The laundry room is pitch black, the power has gone out. How many times do you need to pull a sock out of the dryer so you can get a matching pair?

I'm sure this isn't the answer but whatever, I'll make a fool of myself.

You can't see the difference between black and white since it's too dark so you just assume they are matching.

Edit: I have a feeling that is has something to do with the power being out...

Wouldn't the socks be wet since the power is out. Power is needed for the dryer to work.

You need three socks. If you pull out a white one then a black one, the next one MUST be either white or black, so you definitely have a pair.

A similar problem:

It's come time for a princess to marry, but the king is not happy about the loss of his daughter. He therefore devises a test that any suitor must pass in order to marry his daughter -- failure will result in death.

All the suitors gather in the palace to hear what the test will be. The king announces "I have placed a white marble and a black marble into this bag. All you need to do in order to marry my daughrer is draw the white marble. If you draw the black marble, you will die. The test will be held tomorrow for any willing to try."

That night, one of the suitors, unable to sleep, wanders the palace hallways and overhears the king talking to his advisors. They have secretly placed two black marbles in the box, guaranteeing death to any who try.

The suitor returns to his room, distraught. Then, an idea comes to him how he can guarantee himself the princess as his bride and escape certain death without harming or any way embarassing the king.

What does he do?

Jason, what happens after one person draws a marble? Is it put back in the bag before the next guy gets to try? (or is that completely irrelevant? I'm grasping at straws here!)

Oh - you know, I guess that does have an impact.

Each suitor would be brought into the throne room separately and draw (presumably in front of assorted noble people). When they drew the black, they would be removed, and the next suitor would be brought in.

Remember, any accusations of the king's cheating would result in embarassment - hence bringing a white marble would not work. After the suitor does "his thing", the king will be forced to agree to the marraige, and no one will have known of his deceit

Well...I'm kind of confused with the marble thing. Are there other people there to attest to the king's word? If there is such a person or group then, basically can't the suitor get rid of one of the marbles and since ideally there should be one white and one black, the concealed marble in the suitor's posession would be white if the one remaining in the bag is black. But I couldn't really think of a way getting rid of the drawn marble...until the hint was mentioned. Assuming that I'm not off base here...

You pretty much got it, Marlene. When the suitor goes in he takes out one marble and puts it away saying "This is the marble I choose." He then pulls out the other marble, shows it is black, and says "if this marble is black, then the one I chose must be white." This would save the king the embarassment of admitting he cheated.

Answer the rock thing please.....I didn't get it. Someone had bad aim and hit a dryer and all the socks fell out because they may have been wet and the lights were out so black and white make no sense in the dark and there were marbles......PM me please before I pop open a vein......!
