Bernadette just got reran like two days ago.
I may be in the minority, but I love this show. I know he interviews a number of people who have nothing to say, but...usually, I find some nice little nugget to take home with me. My favorite was watching the students continue to ask Cate Blanchett questions like, "Where in your past do you go to create those dark and depressing scenes?" and "What sort of sense memory do you use?", only to have her respond with "Um...I don't. I just play the scene." And, then she spends time talking about classical acting theory -- and the students are MADLY taking notes -- because they've NEVER heard of anyone beyond Lee S.
Love me some Cate.

i enjoy this show depending on the guest --james lipton posed for the word "smarmy" and he looks as if he smells a bit mildewy. the guests sometimes leave something to be desired(i've never seen an actor as STUPID as cameron diaz, absolutely unwatchable -- but she has won awards and has starred in a scorsese film) and as these lectures are part of a series in a masters program, i wonder what the students think of them. i would be raising hell if i had to attend lectures by jlo, cameron or ben affleck. i'm not taking out student loans to read US Magazine.
on the other hand, i have been surprised and delighted by the interviews with charlize theron angelina jolie and barbra streisand ("anybody got a kit-kat?") i tivo the show and just press delete if i can't take it.

Get the Arthur Laurents autobiography to read a fun, skeevy tale of James Lipton and a live sex show (I read a galley print...I assume it made it into final publication).
Plum, the Sondheim episode is actually pretty great. They discuss his work and his process and illuminate what is being said by having Jim Walton, Liz Callaway (or both) sing songs from Sondheim shows. A great night.
Lipton is unwatchable...but sometimes the guests have very interesting things to say. But when they try to discuss process with Drew Barrymore (and I love me some Drew), I have to question what the hell is going on?

Inside the Actors' Studio has been taping their new season at my school. (Pace University.) I haven't been to a taping session yet, but I'm going on Monday to see Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, and Susan Stroman..
And, from what I've heard, James Lipton is not the nicest guy.. I'll be able to confirm or disprove that after Monday.

Well having Sondheim served a pretty obvious purpose I thought -- just as having directors serves a purpose. There's more to acting than just acting, you know.
Billy Joel and Elton John were obviously reaching but even John could have been useful had they actually asked him the differences between writing for the radio and writing for shows and things of that nature that might actually be informative.

Posted: 11/10/05 at 2:37pmFlipping channels just now, I happened upon the Roseanne Barr episode. He says to her, "Who played your sister Jackie?" and she says, "Laurie Metcalf - she's soo great - soooo great..." and he actually seriously asks her "Does she come from comedy?" And she says to him, as she realizes like we all have what a complete and utter moron he is, "She comes from the Steppenwolf Theater Company." The look on her face - like, are you the biggest idiot on the planet?? is PRICELESS.
