I do. I actually think Leslie Howard made a better Higgins than Rex Harrison (heresy, I know). I'm looking forward to Roundabout's production next year - Jefferson Mays is an interesting choice for the role.
This Shawn Elliot thing is freaky. I really hate the idea that someone made up and spread something so awful and upset the family like that.
I know!
But I have another question - if Shawn Elliott did not have a stroke and was seen in Donna Murphy's dressing room tonight, why was he taking things out of there?
There is much more to this story.
ETA: And who is this X who just joined tonight?
Well, that's not necessarily a big deal. I've taken one or two things out of Betty's dressing room when she was sick, one time there were shoes that had to be returned and I needed to get them out before Karen Mason settled in for a show. It could be nothing.
I too enjoyed Howard in PYGMALION, which pleasantly surprised me because I couldn't stand him in GONE WITH THE WIND. Though Hiller's Eliza left a lot to be desired, in my opinion. For one, she was too statuesque and "mannish." Hepburn fit the bill better, I think. However, the worst Eliza I've seen has to be Margot Kidder. She and Peter O'Toole starred in a TV adaptation of the play back in the early '80s. Simply dreadful!
I never saw that version. And Leslie Howard was horribly miscast in GWTW - he was too old, for one thing (and he knew it, too.)
D2, my speculation is that X is a regular poster who doesn't want to "out" themselves. Totally understandable.
You're quite the multitasker, D2, carrying on two separate conversations, simultaneously.
It's the chocolate.
I'm on both boards, too.
You must be a wonder in bed.
Just sayin'.
Well, on that note, I'm off to bed.
Thanks for the nightmares.
Glad to return the favor, Rath. You know, all those posts about Sally, and Monk, and...
Just sayin...
G'night Rath. Sweet dreams.
Don't forget the avatars, D2. I couldn't sleep for days after the last one.
Well, now WEST SIDE STORY is on and I'm probably going to be up all night.
Is TMC having a musical movie fest?
No, actually. WSS is on PBS here in NYC. I just happened to be flipping through the channels and saw that is was just starting. It's up to the part where Tony is in the alley calling for Maria - the "balcony" scene.
One other thing that irks me about WSS is their depiction of Puerto Ricans. First of all, the accent is way off. I have Puerto Rican family and they don't sound like that. Secondly, Puerto Ricans don't say "¡Andale!" That's of Mexican origin.
None of the movies from that period, and earlier, are remotely politically, or even factually correct, WSS being a prime example. Broadway and Hollywood dealt in stereotypes, figuring white bread America wouldn't know the difference or care. Which at the time, it didn't.
I realize that, but it's still hella annoying. However, I enjoy the film, dubbing/bad accents/stereotypes notwithstanding.
COOL is on right now. My favorite number.
ETA: Wow, that number leaves me breathless every time. Tucker Smith!
Okay, that's it for me. I'm signing off now. G'night!
Do we honestly believe that there are any fewer stereotypical portrayals of ethnicities, gender, sexuality today, or for that matter that movies aren't still plagued by bad accents? Thank you Renee for wreaking havoc on the Brigid Jones of my head.
Alas, it was my favorite professor --that wench --Dr. Share for making me read Girl on the Magazine Cover-- any progress I may have thought I spotted evaporated page by painful page.
