What a disappointing show tonight. The skits fell flat and Lynch seemed very uncomfortable. I think she's a fine actress in all the films i've seen her in and she's a stitch on GLEE. BUT, she's not naturally funny, as was evidenced tonight. She had to resort to "Sue Sylvester" to garner any laughs. Her best bit was actually imitating ( and singing)ala CHER in a Sunday Night Football sports spoof. The guy who played Denzel Washington opposite her in a cop skit was fantastic and he stole the scene AND the show tonight. What a letdown, though that singer Bruno Mars is pretty talented.

Huh. I actually thought it was quite good. A few bits were a miss (like they've always been) but all in all I thought it was pretty damn funny.

Ok, I am liking this Bruno Mars kid and the Denzel "impersonation" was spot on.

I liked her monologue (have you seen her in Christopher Guest movies and Party Down? cuz she's never just been Sue Sylvester) and she made the best out of some mediocre writing. Gilly in the Glee parody pretty much ruined the skit which is a shame since Keenan and Andy were pretty good.

The Sunday Night Football parody was Faith Hill, not Cher (though I can see the confusion due to vocal style). Loved her skits with Andy and the Suze Orman sketch. Jay Pharoah's fantastic and I would not be shocked if he outshines more guests and fellow players regularly, he is just really good at his impressions. When SNL could not even take full advantage of Amy Poehler coming back hosting I was already a skeptic, but I enjoyed this episode.

I didn't like the Glee sketch. I guess it could have been funnier if they didn't turn it into a Gilly sketch. It was also a bit too easy to make Jane Lynch play Sue in that.

I expected and was wanting her to play sue. A shame they couldn't have had the Glee writers write her lines. I am really trying to give SNL a chance but they have missed some opportunities for laughs. I really think it is time for new writers or at least a new head writer. Weekend update wasn't even as funny as usual to me this evening.

^ The impressions of the characters were off to me as well. I know it won't be perfect, but I felt like none of them were who they were supposed to be. They should have utilized Brittany as well.

I tried to watch last night but had a hard time keeping my eyes open. I DVRed it and will watch it later. I agree that turning the Glee skit into a Gilly skit didn't work at all.

It was the best so far this season. Lynch was fine.

If Pharoah keeps this up, he will soon be a regular. You now have someone else to look forward to when you watch.

"I think she's a fine actress in all the films i've seen her in and she's a stitch on GLEE. BUT, she's not naturally funny, as was evidenced tonight."

Um, she's not naturally funny?????? She was only a member of Second City and pretty much improvised her way through the Chris Guest films where she killed.

I'm pretty sure its the SNL writing team that isn't funny. Jane is a comic genius actually, but she can't save horrendous writing.

OP you have it wrong. SNL's problem wasn't Lynch, but the terrible writing - as it's always been. The faults in the show are seldom the host's fault, especially not when you have someone like Lynch there!

I mean, really, Gilly in the Glee skit? Why?

I really wish Wiig would just clear out already - she's almost NEVER funny, and EVERY joke she does has been done before -- and it wasn't funny the first seventy times.

"I mean, really, Gilly in the Glee skit? Why?"

Sue was not even well-written in her jabs. A Glee sketch was inevitable but it seemed the writers knew the limitations of most of the players vocally (which could have made a good autotune joke) or really did not know the material (both the writers and most of the players).

I have often wondered how much input/ control the hosts have over their episodes. Does nyone know what level their creative involvement is? Shaping the sketeches, etc? It would seem that someone considered as accomplsihed in comedy as Lynch (and quite a few others I have seen fall 'flat' as hosts) would be very conscious of how a poor shaowing might affect their 'brand.'

I have to agree with the others that say it wasn't Jane's talent, it was the really bad writing. But also, it was like they didn't know what to do with her. It's like they thought "Ok, she can do Sue and she can do a lesbian skit, now we only have to fill 50 more minutes."

The opening monologue was good.

The Glee skit was one of the worst I've seen. Gilly was never a funny character and they should drop the character immediately. But to put it in Glee was ridiculous. There were several different ways they could have gone with Glee but they just decided to punt that one.

I thought the psychiatrist short was good and the NFL singer was good. The others were just mediocre.

Her trying to play Phyllis Diller in Password was ok, but the skit didn't go anywhere. The Suze Orman skit was clever but didn't go anywhere either. And the final movie director skit was a filler skit that you could tell was rushed because they were running out of time.

If SNL had balls, they would have had Jane play Hillary Clinton. They could have used her skills so much more than they did.

i think the one time where the show's faults were both the writing AND the host was January Jones... eeek.. that was a HORRIBLE episode!

"she can do Sue and she can do a lesbian skit"

So which category would her work in Julie & Julia fit into?

"So which category would her work in Julie & Julia fit into?"

The producers of SNL couldn't fit that side of her into the show. That's my point, they didn't know what to do with her and only saw her in those two categories: Sue skit and lesbian skit.

If SNL had balls, they would have had Jane as Hillary Clinton and Sudeikis as Joe Biden and someone as Bob Woodward. Whether it was on Weekend Update or a skit of its own, they could have had both of them fighting to be Vice President.

Actually the Host does get a say in the skits chosen for the show and some of the material. Sometimes they may aid in writing them. I believe the writers pitch the ideas on a Monday meeting, then Wednesday there is a table read where the shows sketches are chosen. Thursday and Friday are camera blocking and rewriting.
Rewriting continues happening right up until show time when sketches can be pared down re written or changed completely between dress and Air.

Yes, as anyone can attest to if they have seen a dress rehearsal and then the actual broadcast show.

Jane Lynch is definitely funny. She was great in Party Down. But that episode was pretty bad. New Boyfriend Show was funny, and the Mom on Facebook skit was funny. The Denzel impression was amazing, but the skit itself wasn't funny at all.

Would love to see some sort of skit where Bill Hader and Jay Pharoah basically have an Impression-off. Could be awesome.
