"Personally, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly, like premarital sex between heterosexuals. If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits. It says that, you know, that’s a sin. If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, whatever it maybe, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ. So I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don’t think the bible would characterize them as a Christian."
Granderson reacted strongly to Broussard’s comments, saying, “I really don’t need Chris or anyone else telling me if I’m a Christian because Jesus tells me I am.”
Broussard has previously written that he believes the NBA is “ready” for the first out player. But in that same essay, he also said it would make him “a little uncomfortable” to shower with a gay teammate. He also cast his doubt that being gay is biological, writing, “there are many scientists on both sides of the genetic debate, and I believe a truly objective person would admit the biological evidence for homosexuality is far from definitive.”

Well Jesus isn't a Christian either, so I don't know what he's getting his panties in a twist about.

Broussard is covering the wrong sport if he thinks pre-marital sex is a sin.
Also, sportscaster Tim Brando is embarrassing himself on Twitter, likening it to announcing a sex tape.
There are a bunch of sports media people are aggressively stating they don't care or don't get why it is news. It is different in tone from the 'I wish this wasn't news and p,ayers can live their life in peace'- just angrier, annoyed like a coded kind of homophobia in that they are freaked out by thinking about a gay athlete.

HuffPo is reporting that President Obama called Collins to express his support.

How quickly we forget and distort history. DAVE KOPAY was the FIRST PROFESSIONAL BALL PLAYER TO COME OUT OF THE CLOSET and there have been others since today's 'historic' announcement.

Kopay and others have come out AFTER retiting. Collins is the first ACTIVE player to come out.

Yes, but people are acting like he's the first, ever.

I will never for the life of me be able to understand why people think the next step from being gay is incest or marrying animals (both of which are arguments I've heard on more occasions than I can count). Stupidity and ignorance are the only reasons, I suppose.

Theatrediva,
Being the first to come out and being the first to come out while still playing are two totally different things. There have been athletes that didn't come out while playing because they were worried about the negative reaction that they would be getting. However, Collins shows that he is above that.
Also, Strummrgirl, I know that I said that this might react in a negative light towards Collins. Yes, you're right in saying that Stern and the NBA are leagues above other sports leagues when it comes to being accepting of homosexuals. However, that doesn't mean that every team feels that way. Nate Silver's 538 blog in the post was an interesting one regarding Collins. He looked at Collin's stats and age and used that as a basis to see if he would get picked up by another team. He pretty much said that sadly, because of his ability even though 60 per cent of players who are older etc get signed, there is still a good chance that Collins won't just by stats alone, regardless of him coming out or not. However, Silver commented that he felt that if he wasn't signed it would make the league or team(s) that don't sign him look bad, and that if he was signed it could create a potential media circus.

Winston, my post was not a response to yours.
I love Nate Silver but he is a stats guy and ignores how players lke Collins function beyond their stat-line (and I saynthis as a pro-sabermetrics sports fan that Silver was a major force in). Collins is a widely respected player and person. He is like an extra assistant coach out there getting major kudos from players and coaches. To quote Bill Simmons, Juwan Howard still plays in this league- there is room for Jason Collins. He is not going to have a continuing circus/cult of personality following him like Tebow who may be youn but has the most unbalanced amount of attention to his actual professional talent. This fear is ridiculous, especially in the league he playsin. Stern won't allow such a thing to cast such a stain on the NBA.

that's just what happens when society lets people believe that fairy tales from the desert of palestine, written by uncouth, uncultured, ignorant mammals, during a very bad time of human history, when people had no idea of the complexities of human biology and sexuality, are true.
people also have to realize what an accident this terrible homophobia is. a few battles here and there, and perhaps the greek religion would have survived to be the predominant one. then this would be a non-issue (zeus was bisexual), and organized religion would just make people hate something else.

strummergirl,
I think that you're giving Stern and the NBA more credit than they are due. Yes, there are those in the NBA who have come out in favor of Collins, and I am sure that there are those in the NBA who aren't the biggest fans of this as well. The only difference is that Stern would most likely fine those who speak negatively of Collins. I do think that this has an impact on him being signed. Aside from him being an average player he's getting old (for the NBA at least.)
I agree with what Silver said. that Collins is the kind of player that could easily not be picked up by another team based upon his abilities alone. However, the question that no one would know the answer to would be, would teams take a pass on him because of his age and because he no longer is the player he once was? Or, would that just be a coverup because they don't want to hire a gay player?
Also, to equate what could potentially happen with Collins and the media to Tebow is crazy. Tebow is a textbook case of someone who's good in college but not good enough to make it in the NFL (who knows, he might make it in the CFL, who knows.) But, he was part of a media frenzy that ESPN started simply because he's white and loves him some Jesus. They then quickly turned on him as well.
I think that if he gets resigned, a media circus is created by the simple notion of some reporter asking a potential future teammate how they feel about playing with someone who is gay, and said teammate saying the wrong thing.

I love when bigots like Broussard make those loquacious condemnations.
They come off as small minded and scared, which is exactly what they are.

The church also has a LOT do with it. Just last sunday in mass the priest brought petitions for the congregation to sign with the purpose of banning a bill which prevented the bullying of LBGT children. He then went on to fill the congregation's minds with his own ideas on the matter, alarming us of the dangers that this bill would cause such as teaching children that it was normal to be gay and having teachers in drag. I was of course, DISGUSTED with it all and I think I was the only one there who didn't sign the petition to the shock of my family.

The media circus will be short-lived. Tebow's hype currency is still pretty powerful because there is polarization that is based on skills vs. hype. I wasn't comparing, I was contrasting. Any team who is scared of a brief circus in being 'the team' to sign Collins needs to look at Tebow and consider it could be far worse.
And no, Winston, you need to do your research on Stern and the gay community. He has been prepared for this since the Magic Johnson HIV announcement when most sports commissioners could never imagine the idea of gay players. Of course there are probably not people in the NBA thrilled about this but Stern supported th first out sports executive and that announcement had no such critics. Players are a different beast but Stern throwing fines at people who attack Collins portrays a man who wants to throw money at a problem in the remaining strands of homophobia. Stern has worked a lot in the NBA's image and frankly, he has created a much safer environment for a player coming out than MLB and the NFL (even though that sport has made progress).
